Abyssal Merfolk

Abyssal merfolk are one of fourteen sophontic species native to planet Auvarha. The species differ from tropic merfolk thanks to their environment; abyssal merfolk, as indicated by their names, inhabit the benthic plains of the six oceans found on the planet.

With all this ocean to themselves, these people have transformed the ocean beds into habitable lands for their sprawling megacities.

Anatomy

Eggy Placeholder by Dr Emily Vair-Turnbull

Abyssal merfolk can easily be recognised in the depths by their chromatic scales, producing striking glowing patterns visible in the lightless environement. They have a humanoid upper torso, head, and arms, while their lower torso transforms into a tail that resembles a viperfish.

These merfolk have small heads, with large primitive "eyes" not used for seeing, but for detecting vibrations using hundreds of tiny electroreceptors. Abyssal merfolk regularly reach around three metres in length, the majority of it their lengthy tails.

Benthic Sprawl

What the abyssal merfolk call the "Benthic Sprawl" is the expansion of their megacities to cover the entire planet's ocean bed. Abyssal merfolk are beyond intelligent, far exceeding the likes of any other people on Auvarha. They keep to themselves at the very bottom of the oceans, some going so far as to constructing protective barriers covering their cities.

While these cities may be expansive, these merfolk have not forgotten to give back to nature. Much of these cities work with natural environments, offering caves, crevices, and hiding holes for vulnerable species; farmlands for marine plants and algae to grow en masse, and grazing fields for benthic megafauna.

I kind of love them, though they also make me a little nervous. At least they give back to nature within their cities!

There's definitely something a bit eerie about them, who knows...

I love the sense of difference these merfolk give away, probably die to their shape I'm trying to picture and their uncommon habitat.   You mentioned their tail being similar to that of a viperfish? I can imagine that being predatorishly long and almost aggressive in shape? the eyes are a fascinating trait as well. How does that influence the shapes of the cities, the walls? If they're responding to vibrations, this means more engravings and use of hard/sharp-edged, soft/diffuse-shaped materials?   Thanks for a great article! It made me think about a variety of things I haven't thought about lately.

Thank you so much! <3 I've not quite figured it out yet, but these merfolk communicate using vibrations, so that would indeed affect how the cities are constructed, and how they operate. :D

I actually plan on drawing one soon! Once I build up the confidence to draw cities, haha

I don't know why I love merfolk so much, given that the open ocean scares the crap out of me, but whatevs. What's important is that I love these merfolk more than most, and it's because of that final section on the Benthic Sprawl. It feels only natural that they'd be sensitive to the environment, given how traditionally insensitive we land-dwellers have been to the seas. Well done!

I'm so glad you like them! <3 I really wanted to make the merfolk of this world a little bit more unique. And it was important to me that these people be respectful to nature :D

If they communicate via vibrations I wonder if they have special echo chambers or conductive lines for long distance communication? Especially if their cities are very expansive. They also probably have a really unique style of architecture since they don't need to see. I'm imagining Abyssal Mer-children hiding and playing sonar Marco Polo. XD

It could be so much fun to think more about these cities! Maybe it could be a WE project :O
