Magical Surges

Magical surges are when an excess amount of magical energy takes over the body. This condition is not unique to any specific type of magic - the effects are also (typically) temporary, but may affect individuals differently.
They can be incredibly damaging, slowly draining the life out of a person. They also regularly cause scarring, resembling the type of magic seen in the surge.

Surge dampeners are a special piece of equipment used to dampen, or completely nullify, the effects of a magical surge. Magical surges are often accidental, sometimes proving fatal. A surge dampener aims to keep the power-enhancing aspect of a magical surge, while preventing one's body, mind, and soul from deteriorating.

A surge dampener is a pair of bracelets worn tight around the wrists. When connected they release a bright burst of energy that can dampen local magical fields. When worn while a magical surge is induced, they absorb all of the excess magical energy that causes the deterioration.

One can purchase a surge dampener at your local apothecary, magical appliance shop, and they are even carried by many pop-up mages. Surge dampeners are easily acquirable and cost very little money, making them a good investment. A cheap dampener will need replacements, but a high quality one can last decades.
