Malasium

Malasium is a type of rare mineral found around volcanic regions. It is a deep blue in colour, with a slightly purple sheen to it.

The mineral has no properties that give it a unique purpose, and is typically used in precious jewelry as a gemstone.

Symphia Luhng, founder of Yonderhythm, famously wore a malasium necklace with an estimated worth of 12 million charms. Symphia claimed her necklace set her back just a hundred charms, but once the gemstone was confirmed to be malasium, its value skyrocketed.

Malasium is a rare mineral found in a number of ores. It can be found in isolated regions on few planets - Zinacore, a Karkhalan mining company, is one of the biggest exporters of malasium, particularly from operations on Hell.

In the Economy

The process of extracting malasium is excrutiating. Teams of nearly thirty men and equipment worth millions, just to pull one or two ores out of the ground miles below the surface.
Then, the gemstones are very carefully laser cut from its ore. Expensive machinery is used because a person can too easily slip and fracture these minerals, worth millions.
— Gemstones expert

One carat of malasium, its purest form, is worth roughly fifty thousand charms. With roughly three hundred thousand malasium mines in the Milky Way (as compared to nearly sixty trillion gold mines in the Greater Oasis alone), there is an incredibly insignificant number of masalium gemstones in circulation.

Malasium is most popular with the ultrawealthy. It has quickly become a status symbol; those capable of throwing away tens of millions on these gemstones will do everything in their power to acquire a precious piece of jewelry.

Cultural Impact

While the average person couldn't dream of affording malasium, it is extremely well known, its name heard in conversation nearly as much as an emerald or sapphire.

Gemstones are seen to have different properties; it is said that wearing malasium close to the body brings protection, and heals the body. Wearing it around the neck or chest is said to protect the body, while wearing it on the head improves mental fortitude. While there is no direct proof of malasium doing any of this, there is something to say for manifestation. Such a strong belief that this gemstone can provide protection can make it a reality.

The color is amazing, really beautiful. Too bad it is so expensive.

Are there fake malasium gems / less-expensive alternatives people might wear? Or lab-grown malasium?

So what I'm hearing is... I should write an article about a less expensive gemstone used as a faux malasium? :D

Hmmmm... I kinda wonder how rare it actually is, or if it is a monopol situation, where the price is strongly inflated to keep the mining companies rich. Dunno if that reading is intended, or if I am naturally sceptic with claims by the ultra wealthy xD

At the end of everything, hold onto anything.

It is rare! but at the same time, there's definitely more out there that hasn't been discovered yet ;)
