Grausenfleisch

The Grausenfleisch is a large mammal found in the savannahs of Southland and Tropacia, only native to Southland. They are 6-7 metres tall. Due to their size, they are often used as transport. These creatures can carry more than 5 tonnes at a time.   Grausenfleisch never stray too far from water. In the savannahs oasises, watering holes and rivers are quite common. They lose heat by bathing and submerging themselves in water. They can hold their breath for an impressive 20 minutes.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Grausenfleisch have 3 eyes which move independantly, this makes it easier to spot predators. Grausenfleisch have very thick grey skin, very hard and leathery, bumpy. They have 4 short wide legs with 2 hooves. They have very small ears, and their whole body is very round. Their lower jaw makes up half of its head, and it has two upwards teeth sticking out, very ogre-like.

Genetics and Reproduction

Grausenfleisch mate once every year, producing one calf, two very rarely. Gestation period is anywhere from 640 to 702 days. Females reach sexual maturity at 2 and a half years old. Babies will stay by their mothers side for the first 2 years, the mother will build homes for their baby every night. The father will most likely abandon the herd and another male will take his place.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Grausenfleisch are herbivorous, meaning they only eat plants. These giant creatures will eat entire trees, ripping them from the ground and using their powerful jaws to crunch the trunk of the tree down, powerful stomach acids digest the entire tree. Baby grausenfleisch will feed on their mothers milk for the first 2 months, then it will slowly start eating grasses and bushes, by about 3 months they will only eat grasses.

Additional Information

Domestication

For thousands of years harmonids have domesticated grausenfleisch, using their ability to carry tonnes to move materials and themselves miles across the dry savannahs. Grausenfleisch are also popular for tourism, in Tropacia people can ride the animals round the savannahs in a small hut on top of them. Grausenfleisch are very popular in tourism as they are friendly towards harmonids, and are willing to take food from them.

Behaviour

Grausenfleisch are very emotional creatures. They feel happy, sad, angry, very similar to humans. When a member of their government dies, they will bury the body, and mourn for the near future. Grausenfleisch are also very noisy. They communicate through bellows, differing in pitches and lengths. These bellows can be heard up to a mile away. Each grausenfleisch' bellow sounds different, and through practiced, can be distinguished with ease. It is vital for a baby to learn their mother's sounds before long, as if they got separated the mother can call out and the baby can locate her.
