In cultures around Maerkhor, your 20th birthday is celebrated by getting to choose whether or not you raise a dragon. they wait til adulthood so children don't make decisions without thinking beforehand
some choose to, wanting to bond for life with their dragon
others wait a few more years so they can spend more of their early adult life doing what they want, as a dragon is a huge commitment
Adoption Process
dragonkeepers tend to dragon eggs in special sanctuaries heated like saunas, help them hatch and raise them as babies
a person visits the dragonkeeper to pick their baby dragon
usually there are just a select few dragon species available, more docile species, some completely domesticated
a person will sit in a large pen with baby dragons running around to pick one they like the most
you can request specific species, colour, pattern, personality, but it depends on what dragons the keeper has, no guarantee
selection process differs with regions
in some cases, a pet dragon is surrendered. when it can no longer live in the wild (maybe due to disability or lack of independence) it is surrended back to a dragonkeeper. someone can then come along and adopt this dragon. taking care of an adult dragon is much more difficult if it has not been raised by birth, and you'll need to re-train it to follow your command
