Dent Spider

Dent spiders are tiny spider species found in forest environments worldwide. They get their name from the bites they leave, tiny dents that remain their forever. In recent years the spider's venom has been used in vaccines for various diseases and viruses, its products have been seen to completely destroy foreign bacteria cells, i.e. the viruses and deseases.

Basic Information

Anatomy

These spiders measure only half a centimetre wide, one of the smallest spiders on Greenerth. They have a tiny body, with its head and abdomen taking up most of its entire size. 8 giant (compared to its head) sit on the front of its head, all working completely independently, giving it a deceptively cute look. Its body is a deep black, with lighter grey spinnerets.

Genetics and Reproduction

Courtship is extensive, males intend to impress females with a dance, all created on their own. If a female is impressed, they mate and the female then kills the male with the venom only created by females.

Ecology and Habitats

Dent spiders live in forest environments worldwide, in Trecath, the Region of Sarra and Aekor. They live close to the ground, in and amongst the cluttered grounds, in the leaves and sticks and soil. They create their spiderwebs in trees though, and the spiders sit from a distance at their home which is usually in the foliage, and spies on the spiderweb with its impressive eyesight, waiting for something to get stuck in it.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Dent spiders feed on any insects that get caught in their spiderwebs. Their small size means that most creatures can eat them, so instead they create large spiderwebs in between branches to capture small creatures. Once a creature is caught in the spiderweb, the critter digests them slowly.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

When the spider was discovered in 1865, they took many samples of its venom to various laboratories worldwide. Through years of extensive research, the scientists in Southland discovered that this venom could be used as a vaccine and cure for various diseases and viruses. Scientists bred together hundreds of these spiders to extract as much venom as they could, but it was difficult since only the females produced the venom.
