Norrabian

Norrabians are the native people of Norrab, a planet in the Cheem System. Norrabians have existed for several million years, originating around the Sian Lowlands, Algol Mountains and the Looming Desert.

Taxonomy

Norrabians are in the subfamily Hominae, alongside humans. They share different lineages, with humans in the genus Homo and norrabians in the genus Homus.

Anatomy

Norrabians are a species of hairless primate. Despite the name, norrabians grow very fine hairs, barely visible. Their skull is oddly shaped compared to a lot of other primates, with a large bony outgrowth on the top of the skull, and outwards-pointed upper jaws.

Norrabians typically have a dark red and purple skin, with a variety of shades ranging from a deep purple to a hot pink. Their heads, aside from the lower jaw, are a different colour, typically much lighter.

The crest extending from the nasal ridge comes in many colours, typically a red, purple, or blue.

Diet

Blue Paddletail Crab Platter by Mochi

Norrabians are omnivorous, requiring more vegetation in their diet than anything else. Norrab is a rather sparse planet, with many vast regions lacking in much flora. Most norrabians are able to digest bark and roots, but populations in more foliage-rich areas have lost this ability.

Many cultural cuisines are inventive, using all of the resources available. Any animals small and weak enough to capture is eaten, however most norrabians have great respect for endangered species, and protect those species in need of protection.

It is difficult to cultivate productive farmlands in many desolate regions, but few crops are able to be grown en masse. Cacti are one of the most heavily grown crops on Norrab, as they provide a lot of water and nutrients, and have few predators.

Reproduction & Growth

2 weeks: Gaining sight
2.5 months: Standing
3 months: Walking
9 months: First words

Unlike humans, norrabian pregnancy is much less painful. Norrabians give birth to one offspring at a time, newborns just six centimetres in length.

Newborns are altricial, practically defenseless for the first year of its life. They are also born blind and incapable of standing, walking, and talking.

Newborn norrabians produce a sickening, rotting scent designed to deter any dangerous animals. Thankfully, other norrabians cannot detect this smell.

Norrabians reach sexual maturity at 20 years of age, but socially defined an adult between 18 and 22, depending on the region.

Behaviour

Native Norrabian by Mochi

Norrabians are typically quite gentle people. They are known to be quite calm, avoiding conflict as much as possible. They only hunt for food; they gain no pleasure or satisfaction from this, unlike many other intelligent species.

There are few normalities that lead society for norrabians. Gender and sexuality is fluid, and any identity is accepted and embraced. Many people choose to celebrate their differences simply as a bonding experience.

Despite living in treacherous conditions, norrabians have no difficulty in looking at things from a positive perspective. Some believe this attitude is what has kept the species alive so long, given they have no real adaptations that help them thrive on Norrab.

Attitude towards other species

The Adamnification of Norrab soured norrabion opinion on other intelligent species. The adamnan species first landed on Norrab eight hundred years ago, and since then, they have managed to wipe out around 50% of native ethnic groups and modified much of Norrab to suit their own needs, destroying entire biomes in the process.

Because of this, norrabians are not particularly fond of other intelligent species. They have nothing against any other species, but prejudice lies within norrabian culture.

What a lovely, peaceful group of people. Love the pictures! I think you might have a typo in your description of them: "The crest extending between from the nasal ridge comes in many colours, typically a red, purple, or blue." Sentence felt a little awkward, like you changed between to from, but forgot to delete it.

Oh Mochi, I think the people behind Star Trek will be knocking on your door soon and asking for your mask design. Great concept - apart from that, they seem to be a nice species. What I don't really understand is why do the newborns have to smell so bad? I would assume that the Norrabians have a very strong protective instinct and would defend their young mercilessly and therefore wouldn't really need it, right?

Awww, thank you so much!   I am glad you asked that! I've thought about it quite a lot. There are thousands of dangerous species on Norrab, many that could easily kill an unguarded, adult norrabian. The babies smell like rotting carcasses to deter animals from eating them. While norrabians do have a very strong protective instinct, in many cases it is not enough to take down some animals. This brings up another issue, as there are some animals that eat rotting carcasses, and are also drawn to the smell. I hope to write an article on why norrabian babies smell, so keep your eyes peeled!

that sounds very plausible and if the environment seems to be rather hostile as here, nature must also come up with rather unusual protective measures - maybe they don't taste good either

I kind of love the idea that the babies smell really bad. Norrabians sound great. <3
