Cryo Carrier
Cryo carrier is the common name given to any spacecraft transporting people over long distances, over long periods of time. Early developing spacefaring civilisations will use cryo carriers to travel across solar systems, as they are much more cost effective and require less advanced technology.
These ships have cryogenic capsules to preserve a person for extended periods of time, ranging from months to thousands of years. Many advanced civilisations still use cryo carriers despite being outdated. They are inexpensive, both to operate and for passengers.
The cryo carrier class is given to any ship built in the last four hundred years that has more than twenty cryogenic capsules and is a registered carrier craft. More than two hundred planetary nations utilise cryo carriers.
Typical Design
Holiday Haulers
This brand of cryo carrier were designed on Razhea Capita. Flights last one to ten months, hibernation optional. Some treat these haulers as the holiday itself, while travelling to another holiday home on another planet.
The average cryo carrier has anywhere between twenty to two-hundred cryo capsules. The largest modern ship ever built, the Mahasian 270, contains 2,140 active capsules, double the amount on lower levels in case of emergency.
Cryo carriers serve no purpose other than transporting person from point A to point B. They are not complex spacecrafts, all they require is a sturdy enough infrastructure and advanced enough artificial intelligent to pilot the vehicle through space without malfunctioning.
Basic facilities can be found aboard most cryo carriers in case of capsule malfunction. If a person wakes up, an alert is sent to the manufacturer and an officer is sent to investigate.
Legislative Issues
Just hours ago, a cryo carrier ship was hijacked, four hundred lives were lost. This atrocity will not stand. We are currently in talks at improving standards of our ships, to ensure hijacking is not possible. This was an outlier. This should not have happened.
Nearly three hundred years ago headlines broke out in the Greater Oasis of the Milky Way. A razhean cryo carrier had been hijacked, passengers killed in their capsules and valuables stolen, estimated at nearly five million charms.
The advanced intelligence system in control of the ship, including its emergency alert, had failed, costing four hundred innocent lives. The Razhean government was outraged, and they pressured the Galactic Highway Enforcement Agency to take legislative action. After this incident, it was required for a cryo carrier to have at least two awake and active crew members at all time if they were travelling for journeys under one hundred years.
For longer journeys, over two years, the crew must rotate shifts. A crew member cannot spend more than a year active in the ship before entering hibernation. For journeys longer than the crew can reasonably be out of hibernation for, the artificial intelligence system must undergo a series of tests to ensure it is completely failsafe, allowing all of its crew members to hibernate at once.
Not even five years ago a scandal broke out around a Hyuyuran cryo carrier. This early spacefaring civilisation had gained attention thanks to its unforgiving world views, especially in regards to life. To solve a fuel shortage issue, several occupied cryo capsules were disposed of mid-flight, left floating in space.
Hyuyuran governments were met with fierce backlash, and though they did not see the issue, acknowledged that this solution is not acceptable in modern spacefaring society, and if they wanted to integrate with said society, they must abide by their basic rules of society. New legislation was put in place that forbade spacecrafts from disposing of occupid cryo capsules.
