Root-binder
Root-binder is a Glomeromycota fungus that has a symbiosis with the Rock Root tree. It helps the tree stick to crumbling cliffs, holding them together. The mycelial network secretes a sticky substance, known as root glue, that anchors the tree and rocks together, while additionally extracting minerals from the rock to give some of them to the tree.
Unlike Basidiocarp fungi, the Root-binder fungus does not produce a visible "fruiting body" mushroom cap to disperse its spores. Instead, new Root-binder specimens are created by integrating resting spores that lie dormant into the seeds of the tree. When the seed germinates and starts to grow, it also triggers the resting spore, which actually extends into the ground below before the first root of the tree does. This anchors the seed to the rock, preventing it from being moved around.
