Ridgeback Drake

Ridgeback drakes represent a unique and distinct group of drakes native exclusively to the rugged terrains surrounding the Ridgeback Mountains. These drakes are a comparable size to the shortail drake, but are distinguished by their standard-length tails and pronounced, ridge-like crest that runs along their spines, providing them with a striking appearance that sets them apart from other dragonkin.   These creatures play a vital role within the ranks of the Dragonguard, serving primarily in ground infantry operations, similarly to the shortail drake. However, their presence is predominantly noted in the areas surrounding Eldrya and the Ridgeback Mountains, where they have adapted to the specific environment.   Ridgeback drakes comprise a small but significant number of species, all confined to this singular geographical region. The mountains themselves were named after these drakes, highlighting their cultural impact on the area. Among the species, the Western Ridgeback thrives in the lush forests to the west of the mountain range, where it navigates the dense foliage with ease. Meanwhile, the Mountain Ridgeback makes its home directly within the craggy cliffs and rocky outcroppings of the Ridgeback Mountains, demonstrating exceptional climbing ability and resilience in harsh terrain. Finally, the Eastern Ridgeback inhabits the eastern flank of the mountains, residing in the diverse ecosystems that lie between the shores of Guardian's Haven Bay and the arid expanses of the Duskfire Desert.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Ridgeback drakes are similar in appearance to traditional drakes, yet they possess distinctive features that set them apart. They are essentially wingless dragons and are slightly larger than the shortail drake. One of the most notable characteristics of the ridgeback drake is its unique ridge-like crest, rather than the typical spikes that adorn the backs of many dragonkin. These drakes sports a continuous, short ridge that runs along its spine, creating a unique silhouette. Furthermore, the ridgeback drake boasts a robust, muscular build and scales that exhibit a captivating range of hues that reflect the environment of their natural habitat.

The coloration of these drakes displays only slight variations, yet each is adorned with distinctive mottled patterns that provide them with effective camouflage in their respective habitats.
Eastern Ridgeback drakes are characterized by a delicate reddish-tan hue, reminiscent of the sun-baked sands of the arid landscapes that cradle the borders of the Duskfire Desert. Their scales shift subtly in tone, almost reflecting the hues of the surrounding terrain, almost acting as if they were a mirage.
In contrast, Mountain Ridgeback drakes display a palette of greys and earthy tones, interspersed with striking patterns of black and white that mirror the rocky outcrops and sparse vegetation of their mountainous homes. This coloration aids in camouflage among the jagged cliffs and scattered shrubs.
Western Ridgeback drakes, residing in the lush expanse of the forest, showcase rich earthy browns and deep greens, complemented by black patterns that echo the forest's leaf litter and moss-covered stones. This allows them to move stealthily through the underbrush and remain hidden.
