Eldryan Sword

The Eldryan Sword is a distinguished short sword, specifically designed as a standard-issued weapon for the personnel of the Dragonguard. This weapon was crafted during the Draconian War, serving as a crucial tool for the valiant guardians against the threat posed by enemy dragonkin. The blade is characterized by its lightweight construction, allowing for ease of use without sacrificing effectiveness in battle.   The design features a striking handguard shaped like a dragon's head, complete with detailed horns that serve as quillons. While various artistic styles and modifications exist, all Eldryan swords descend from this foundational design.   Designed and forged by the skilled swordsmiths of Eldrya, the Eldryan sword emerged during the pivotal period marked by the town's expansion. Its primary purpose is to allow dragonguard fighters to engage enemy dragonkin in close-quarters combat, combining the necessity for mobility with lethal precision. The blade's length is strategically advantageous, enabling the wielder to target the dragonkin's heart by penetrating through armor in vulnerable areas, while still being short enough to use in tighter spaces.

Uses

The Eldryan sword serves multiple significant purposes, predominantly within military contexts. While its foremost function is for direct combat — particularly against enemy dragonkin when confronted in personal encounters — the sword is also versatile enough to be employed in survival scenarios. In such instances, select variants of the sword can function effectively as a striker against a ferrocerium rod, providing a means for creating fire in dire situations.   In addition to its practical applications, the sword holds a place of honor in ceremonial functions. These ceremonial versions are often more ornate, boasting elaborate designs that distinguish them from their combat-ready counterparts. While they are not sharpened and lack the functional edge needed for battle, they symbolize the pride and heritage of the Dragonguard. Despite the widespread issuance of the Eldryan sword among all Dragonguard personnel, the ceremonial versions are reserved primarily for officers and select elite units, reflecting their status and role within the order.

Cultural Significance

When the sword was first used by Dragonguard personnel, it quickly became a symbol of the organization. So much so that the Dragonguard Alliance used it in the coat of arms when designing their flag, which was adopted shortly after they began the Draconian War. Additionally, the Dragonguard's emblem is also used as both the official seal and service mark.

Types and Styles

The design of Eldryan swords encompasses a wide range of variations, each tailored to specific purposes and styles, yet they all adhere to common elements. The pommel at the base of the hilt serves both functional and aesthetic roles; while standard designs prevail, many pommels are intricately crafted or customizable, particularly for officers and ceremonial occasions, featuring unique engravings or ornate details that reflect rank or heritage.   The handguard often boasts an elaborate design, frequently resembling the fierce visage of an open-mouthed dragon, with the blade emerging from its jaws. The choice of dragon can vary significantly, reflecting different cultural influences, artistic styles, or historical significance. Typically, the quillons of the handguard are the horns of the dragon, and can either extend horizontally or slightly forward. Some designs have the horn bend backwards to the grip and pommel, effectively serving as a knuckle-bow.   As for the blades themselves, they come in several types, but they all maintain a consistent standard length of 23 inches. This length strikes a balance between maneuverability and reach, making it suitable for a range of combat scenarios while ensuring that the sword remains a versatile weapon.

3/4 Blade / Half-sabre

The versatility of swords is exemplified even in their blade designs, which can vary significantly. While the standard-issued sword is fashioned with a classic straight double-edged blade, others adopt a unique structure, featuring a full cutting edge on one side and a 3/4-edged side on the opposite. The final 1/4 of the blade, positioned closest to the handguard, is deliberately unsharpened and much thicker, named the spine. The design permits the sword to remain prominently ready while allowing the wielder to effectively engage in archery or operate a small firearm, despite the contemporary rarity of bows. During aim, the 1/4 spine of the blade can be conveniently rested against the pit of the arm or against the bicep, providing a stable platform for precision. Once firing is complete or the sword is needed, the firearm can be swiftly holstered or discarded, allowing a seamless, rapid transition in which the sword can be rotated forward with a thrust of the shoulder / upper arm and aimed directly at an adversary.[2] This thickened, non-sharp segment of the blade also offers a practical advantage in survival scenarios, capable of functioning as a striker for a ferrocerium rod, akin to traditional flint and steel tools.

Ceremonial

Ceremonial swords are meticulously crafted, showcasing variations in design elements tailored to the specific recipient and their rank. Typically, these swords are not sharpened for combat use; however, they maintain a sharp tip. The Eldryan sword is commonly issued to the majority of personnel within the Dragonguard, though only officers are authorized to wield them during formal ceremonies. Each branch of the dragonguard proudly displays its distinctive styles for ceremonial swords designated for officers, but they all still adhere to the overarching design principles. These swords are embellished with intricate details, luxurious materials, and tailored customizations that reflect the prestige of high-ranking individuals.   Among the various ceremonial swords, the most distinguished is that of the Archon of the Dragonguard, which, notably, also serves as their primary combat-issued sword. Each Archon may personalize the design of their sword, which they carry throughout their tenure in the role. Upon retirement or following the Archon's passing, these swords are ceremoniously retired and housed in a dedicated museum in Eldrya, alongside all previous Archon swords as a tribute to their legacy. Furthermore, the Archon retains the discretion to opt for a separate combat sword that is not employed for ceremonial functions. Should they choose this path, both the combat and ceremonial swords are retired to the museum.

I find it super interesting, that you give specific weapon types a history in the setting! Also love the influence of blumineck in the lore ;)   I do have a question though, because the text doesn't really clarify, why the standard issue-sword of the Dragonguard is a short sword and not a long sword. Usually short swords were more of a sidearm, rather than the main weapon. Do Dragonguards mainly use spears/polearms and use the Eldryan Sword as a sidearm?

Thank you!   I thought I mentioned somewhere the reason the Dragonuard has a standard-issued sword; I'll have to reread the article to find it. I think I'll add a history section too. I didn't get around to doing that when I wrote this.   But my thinking was that, while firearms existed, they weren't entirely reliable against dragonkin. (I'm not playing into the "dragon hide/scales are so tough, nothing can penetrate it!" trope too much, but they do have some toughness to them. I mean, we have the elephant gun IRL for a reason, but it's not practical for people to be carrying a thing like that around everywhere. And also having to fire that thing a lot if you encounter enemy dragonkin will just destroy your shoulder haha)   The sword was created at the beginning of the Draconian War and the formation of the Dragonguard. It was meant more for fighting enemy dragonkin, if you were caught in that situation. The short sword isn't too cumbersome or heavy, which is important for the majority of the Dragonguard, who use flight-capable dragonkin. It should still be long enough to reach the heart of a dragonkin if jabbed at any position around the torso section. It was more of a last resort, since you have your dragon to fight the enemy, and using a firearm to try to hit vital spots at close range while trying not to be mauled would be challenging.
