Finnegan Sullivan

This article is a Work In Progress.
Finnegan "Mako" Sullivan was a notorious pirate captain of the high seas off the coasts of Ravia and Ardenfell. He commanded a ship called the Stormrider. He was born in a small coastal town in South Emberland. He grew up sailing on his dad's merchant ships for many years. He often spent more time on the seas and abroad than in his hometown.

Personal history

His mother followed along for many years, until she got gravely sick one year and could no longer join them. She eventually recovered, but was in a weakened state, tired of sailing, and wanted to stay in South Emberland. For a short period of time, Finnegan and his dad cared for her. Eventually, they had to return to sailing their merchant ship, and Finnegan's brothers and a good friend of his mother's took over caring for her.   One day, while sailing with his dad, a small band of pirates attacked the ship. Finnegan's dad knew they couldn't outrun them, so he had to let them board. As they boarded, Finnegan hid, and the two captains talked with each other. Upset that the pirates managed to seize the ship after it had already dropped its cargo off, the pirate captain decided to commandeer the ship. Finnegan's dad tried to fight the captain, but was overwhelmed. Injured, his dad agreed to be sent off alive on a small dinghy near the coast of South Emberland, along with any of his crew that did not want to join the pirates. They cast him away before Finnegan knew what had happened. His dad tried to go to the authorities once he made landfall, but South Emberland did not have a strong navy at the time. Still, a few fellow sailors volunteered to go after the now commandeered ship when they learned his son was still on it. Though they were severely behind.   By the time Finnegan came out of hiding and the crew found him roaming the deck, he was far from his home. The pirate captain didn't want to kick the young man off the ship, in fear of retribution from the former captain, so he let him stay on the ship, if he didn't cause any trouble, and promised that once they reached the Shattered Archipelagos, he'd find someone to bring him back to South Emberland. Finnegan helped the pirate crew while sailing to Pirate's Bay on an island in the archipelago, and decided to stay with them when they reached their destination. The pirate captain hesitated for a second, thinking that if his dad had heard about his son joining the pirates that he might think they had forced him to do so. The captain requested his scribe to write a short document stating that Finnegan had joined the pirates of his own will, and that his family not target the pirate group in retribution under the false pretense that they had forced or threatened him to join them.   Shortly after Finnegan reached the Shattered Archipelagos and joined the pirates, his father, with a small band of mercenaries, came looking for him. They did not know at the time that Finnegan had joined the pirates. The pirate crew Finnegan was a part of was only in port for a few days, but the vast expanse of islands, sandbars, and reefs proved challenging to find him. A few months after his father arrived at the archipelago, the volunteer captains returned to their merchant jobs in Southern Emberland. His father kept searching, though, and ultimately spent his remaining years searching for his lost son in the Shattered Archipelagos, not knowing that his son had turned to a life of piracy. He constantly wrote back home about his journeys and inquired whether Finnegan had returned home. He eventually shipwrecked on a small sandbar within the archipelago and was eventually swept out to sea and drowned when the tide came in.   After a few years as a pirate, Finnegan came across his father's searching vessel on the sandbar. He went out on a dinghy and searched the wreckage. He didn't find much, but only his father's notes and journals detailing his efforts in trying to find him. Reading these logbooks changed Finnegan for the rest of his life. He became depressed after learning what his father had been doing for the last years of his life. He soon became more of a burden to his pirate crew rather than a crewmate, turning to drinking the rum they traded. His captain grew irate with him for constantly being drunk and failing to pull his weight within the crew. With Finnegan's lack of discipline, his captain quickly docked his pay until he started pulling his weight. This further upset Finnegan as he now had no money to pay for things and rum while in port, so he started stealing rum from the very crew he was with. Finnegan, however, was not successful most of the time and was sent to the brig on multiple occasions.

Legend of Mako

Pirate Tale: Legend of Mako
After finding Finnegan trying to steal rum again, his captain had had enough of him. Seeing a shipwreck on a beach, his captain ordered him to scout it out, hoping to maroon him. Finnegan argued and refused to go alone. No other crewmate wanted to go with him, so after some time of debate, his captain agreed to go with him, thinking that he could just get rid of him when they reached the shore. Finnegan, however, was suspicious of the captain, thinking that he secretly had the black mark put on him by his captain, and no one wanted to carry out the assignment. Before embarking on the dinghy, Finnegan pickpocketed a small dagger.   While far from the ship and almost at the shore, Finnegan's captain suddenly threw him overboard into shark-infested waters. The sudden commotion startled the sharks, but Finnegan managed to grab hold of one of their fins, causing it to leap out of the water and over the boat. Taking advantage of the chaos, Finnegan quickly retrieved his dagger as he fell into the boat and stabbed the captain. After killing the captain, Finnegan rolled the body overboard for the sharks to eat as he rowed back to the ship.   This daring encounter, even from afar, was impressive and earned him the moniker "Mako" soon after he returned to the ship. Finnegan sought an opportunity to take control and immediately threatened anyone who did not follow his orders, considering what they had just seen him do a few minutes earlier. They reluctantly followed, in fear of retribution. The next time they came into port, a few of the crew quit, not wanting to be under an unstable captain. Most stayed out of fear, though. The legend of his daring encounter with the former captain spread like wildfire, and he quickly became known as the ruthless Captain Mako.

    Quelling a Mutiny

A while after taking control of his former captain's ship, some of his crew grew increasingly contemptuous and disliked his strict discipline and ruthlessness. Eventually, though, Captain Mako found out about a planned mutiny against him. Once he figured out who was leading it, he ordered everyone top deck of the ship. Finnegan delivered a monologue about the trust needed among pirates to survive their way of life. His voice echoed across the deck as he clarified that disloyalty would not be tolerated. His eyes fell upon the traitorous pirate when he was finished. He then ordered two of the crew to restrain the traitor before he ruthlessly cut out the pirate's tongue.   The gruesome act sent shivers down the spines of the crew, their shock and horror evident. A brutal and visceral reminder of the consequences of betrayal in this captain's domain, solidifying Captain Mako's reputation as a captain not to be crossed.
