Hobgoblin

Mighty Together

"March beside a hobgoblin legion once, and you'll understand why discipline can be more frightening than rage."
— Thane Brokk Granitehand, King of Iron Gate
Hobgoblins are disciplined goblinoids whose civilizations are built upon duty, order, and collective achievement. While outsiders often remember them as formidable soldiers, hobgoblin society values far more than martial skill. Leadership, craftsmanship, scholarship, logistics, and civic responsibility are all regarded as essential pillars of a prosperous nation.   Taller and more powerfully built than goblins, hobgoblins possess sturdy frames, broad shoulders, and skin ranging from deep red and russet to earthy brown and gray. Their features are sharp and commanding, often complemented by carefully maintained armor, polished weapons, and practical clothing that reflects both rank and profession. Personal appearance is considered a reflection of self-discipline rather than vanity.   Hobgoblin cities are meticulously planned. Streets are orderly, fortifications are designed with mathematical precision, and public buildings serve practical purposes before decorative ones. Workshops, academies, and military training grounds stand alongside marketplaces and temples, creating communities where every citizen is expected to contribute according to their abilities.   Duty occupies a central place in hobgoblin life. Every individual has responsibilities to family, community, and nation, and fulfilling those obligations faithfully is considered one of the highest virtues. Advancement is earned through demonstrated competence, not birth alone, and even the children of respected leaders are expected to prove themselves through service.   Although renowned as soldiers, hobgoblins view war as a tool rather than a calling. Victory achieved through careful planning, diplomacy, or superior logistics is often admired more than reckless heroism on the battlefield. A commander who preserves the lives of their soldiers while accomplishing the mission earns lasting respect.   Education is highly valued within many hobgoblin societies. History, engineering, law, strategy, and administration are taught alongside martial disciplines, producing leaders capable of governing as effectively as they command armies. Records are preserved with exceptional care so that future generations may learn from both triumphs and failures.   Ceremonies honoring service are among the most important traditions in hobgoblin culture. Upon completing a lifetime of distinguished work, whether as a soldier, artisan, teacher, or magistrate, an individual is recognized before the community not for personal glory, but for strengthening the people through steadfast dedication.
