Luthror, the Shattered
Luthror is the shattered god of the goblinoid peoples, worshipped primarily by Goblins, Hobgoblins, and Bugbears, in countless tribes scattered throughout the world. Though often dismissed by outsiders as merely another savage war deity, Luthror embodies the insidious nature ambition without loyalty, authority maintained through fear, and survival achieved through cruelty and cunning. His followers are notoriously divided, fractured into rival clans, warbands, and petty kingdoms that rise and collapse in endless cycles of betrayal and violence. Yet despite this disunity, the influence of Luthror remains widespread, for few gods understand desperation, opportunism, and the hunger for power as intimately as he does.
The domains associated with Luthror are those of tyranny, division, cruelty, and domination through fear. Unlike the rigid hierarchies of lawful empires or the brutal unity favoured by the Orcs, goblinoid society under Luthror is defined by constant internal struggle. Every position of authority is contested, every weakness exploited, and every alliance considered temporary. Goblins scheme endlessly against one another, hobgoblins enforce discipline through terror and calculated violence, while bugbears often embody the god’s more primal brutality. To the faithful of Luthror, trust is a liability, mercy a foolish indulgence, and power the only true measure of worth. This philosophy has left goblinoid societies deeply unstable, but also remarkably adaptive, capable of surviving circumstances that would destroy more unified peoples.
According to most surviving accounts, Luthror was once far greater than he is in the present age. Ancient myths claim that he stood alongside Gruumsh in the earliest eras of conquest, before rivalry and ideological division shattered any alliance between them. Where Gruumsh came to embody strength through unity and absolute dominance beneath a single warlord, Luthror embraced a far darker vision of power. One seized through treachery, maintained through fear, and constantly threatened by those beneath it. The hatred between the two gods came to a head during The Schism, when Gruumsh shattered Luthror into shards, at the cost of one of his eyes. These Shards of Luthror were said to have rained down upon the world, and are priceless among his followers. Some say that one day a powerful goblinoid leader will arise, and unite all the shards, and bring back their god.
Luthror and Gruumsh's mutual hatred is reflected clearly in their followers. Orcs often view goblinoids as deceitful weaklings incapable of true honour or conquest, while goblinoids regard orcs as predictable brutes whose obsession with strength leaves them vulnerable to manipulation. Conflicts between the two peoples are among the oldest and bloodiest in recorded history, fuelled not merely by territory or resources, but by the opposing natures of the gods they serve.
Though diminished compared to some of the greater powers of the pantheon, Luthror remains a dangerous and deeply influential deity. His followers are numerous, adaptable, and far more intelligent than many civilised societies are willing to admit. Goblinoid tribes rarely remain united for long, but when a sufficiently cunning or terrifying leader succeeds in binding them together, the result has been at times a great threat to Bounties in the Empire. Kingdoms have fallen not only to the strength of invading armies, but to sabotage, infiltration, betrayal, and unrest seeded long before open war ever began.
