Bugbears
Bugbears are the most primal, nomadic, and physically imposing of the goblinoid peoples, known throughout Tolhera as dangerous wanderers, hunters, mercenaries, and raiders. Unlike Goblins or Hobgoblins, bugbears rarely establish permanent settlements, instead travelling in small family groups and roaming bands that move constantly across forests, mountains, plains, and frontier regions. This nomadic lifestyle has allowed them to spread farther than any other goblinoid race, and bugbear sightings are recorded across nearly every region of the continent, from the frozen Northern Wastes to the Southern Steppes, Ahridia, and even in the central regions of The Empire. Though often viewed as savage by civilised societies, bugbears are remarkably adaptable survivors, capable of enduring harsh environments and integrating themselves temporarily into the conflicts and economies of other races when it benefits them.
Physically, bugbears are the largest and strongest of the goblinoids, towering over most humans and in some cases rivaling or surpassing even Orcs in raw physical strength. They possess broad frames, long limbs, thick fur ranging from dark brown to grey-black, and sharp predatory features well-suited for life as hunters and ambushers. Despite their size, bugbears are surprisingly stealthy creatures, capable of moving through dense forests or rough terrain with unsettling silence. Many favour ranged weapons such as bows, javelins, and throwing axes, stalking prey patiently before striking with sudden overwhelming force. This combination of immense strength and natural cunning makes them exceptionally dangerous opponents, particularly in wilderness regions where they can stalk their prey until the opportune moment.
Bugbear social structures are loose and informal compared to those of other goblinoids. Most travel in small extended family groups or temporary hunting bands rather than large organised clans, with leadership generally falling to the most experienced or capable individual rather than being enforced through rigid hierarchy. Among the goblinoid races, bugbears are often considered the least overtly cruel, though they remain opportunistic, and perfectly willing to employ violence when necessary. Their worship of Luthror, is similarly less structured, taking the form of wandering shamans, ancestral traditions, and simple rites focused on survival, strength, and fortune rather than organised priesthoods or doctrine. Because of their low population density and highly mobile nature, bugbears are difficult to eradicate or meaningfully control, able to disappear into wilderness regions or blend temporarily into the service of stronger powers whenever circumstances demand it.
Throughout history, bugbears have frequently served as scouts, hunters, raiders, trackers, and mercenaries for goblins, hobgoblins, orcs, and occasionally even imperial forces, desperate enough to overlook their reputation. Their loyalty is mostly determined by immediate practical concerns such as food, coin, territory, or survival. This willingness to work alongside other races has made bugbears one of the most commonly encountered goblinoid peoples despite their relatively small numbers. Imperial authorities generally regard them with suspicion rather than outright terror, recognising that individual bugbear groups are often less destructive than organised hobgoblin armies or orc warbands. Nevertheless, travellers and frontier settlements remain wary of them, for bugbears are unpredictable creatures whose instincts for survival and opportunism can shift rapidly with changing circumstances.
