Durin Straight
The Durin Straight is a subterranean tunnel that passes beneath the Iron Mountains, connecting the city of Dun'Vol in Elderan, to the trade town of Durin Station in Osirin.
The Durin Straight is controlled by the Kingdom of Dun'Vol, with the Kingdom collecting a small toll from every trade caravan that passes through the Straight. Even despite the toll, the Durin Straight is an incredibly popular trade route, with all trade between Elderan and Osirin, passing through the tunnel, especially since the Durin Straight is the sole safe passage between the two regions following the creation of the Deadwastes in 2032 AF. The Durin Straight replaced the former main trade route of the Darquin Road, which passed over the border between Elderan and Osirin, and was destroyed by the Deadwastes, with the journey becoming incredibly dangerous.
History
The Durin Straight was the fortunate passion project of a sole individual, a Dwarven citizen of the Kingdom of Dun'Vol, Durin of Clan Ironfoot. Durin had begun casually and recreationally tunnelling through the Iron Mountains in the early 1700's, with the goal to create a passage through the mountains. What began as a fun pastime activity, in time became serious, with it becoming Durin's sole ambition, with him eventually retiring from his employment to mine full time. Many of Durin's friends and family though he had gone mad, with all his waking hours spent on tunnelling, as though driven by an unknowable force.
Durin would eventually pass away before completing his task, with his tunnel nearing completion, but left abandoned for a few years, at least until 2032 AF, with the formation of the Deadwastes and the destruction of the Darquin Road. With the Kingdom of Dun'Vol's main trade route destroyed, Durin's eldest daughter, Eilidh, recalled her father's tunnel, and realised their good fortune. Eilidh and some hired help picked up where her father left off, believing that her father wasn't mad after all, but driven to safeguard the Kingdom's prosperity by the will of the Patron God of Dwarves, Skapari.
The Durin Straight was eventually completed in early 2034 AF, with Durin Station founded by the Kingdom of Dun'Vol soon after in the same year, reconnecting trade between Elderan and Osirin. The late Durin was honoured by the Kingdom of Dun'Vol for his work and premonition, with both the Durin Straight and Durin Station named after him. The Durin family is now one of the richest families in Dun'Vol following the Kingdom of Dun'Vol's purchase of the Straight soon after it's completion, with the taxation of the Durin Straight said to continue until the Kingdom has payed of it's purchase.
