Calrune

Golden Oasis of the Desert

Calrune is the walled capital of Almahna, situated in the south-east of Northern Almahna. It is fed life-giving water from the Nile River through a series of cisterns stretching beneath the sands between the city and the river. This water is used in everything from fountains to drinking wells, and even sewage, as well as to water plants and trees planted through out the city, especially in the Palace District. The city itself is separated into various districts: the Market District, the Noble District, the Colosseum District, and the Housing District. Calrune has the nickname, "The Golden Oasis of the Desert" because of the golden architecture of some of the older structures in the city, as well as the dazzling water fountains found throughout. A new district has recently opened, the Precipice District, which opened last year during the World Fair.

As one travels through out the various districts, they see all the scars left behind by the Siege of Calrune some years back, as well as the scars left by the chaos wrought in the months and years after. Stormbreak's actions as Fae'roh incited a civil war within the great city. The scars are there for all to see. Scars upon a once beautiful city. Such as the terrorist bombing of the Maji Guard Keep, that have since been repaired, or the shattered remnants of the once great pyramid structure of the Almahna Mystia Academy, destroyed by the Dragon Lords, Flamdrone and Holiclone, in their great battle, the consequences of which destroyed much of this city.

Demographics

The demographics of Calrune mostly consist of Almahnan humans; however, with it being the Centre of the World, it is also home to people of all shapes, colours, and sizes. You can find at least someone of just about any ancestry living here at any given time.

Government

There are many ways the governmental structure now, under the rule of Stormbreak, have been described. Most common of which would be as a dictatorship monarchy. Stormbreak has also commonly demanded taxes on the most mundane things and has introduced many tariffs and taxes on exported goods from other nations. Upon his rise to the throne, he dissolved the Allied Nations Council, causing much strife and discord amongst the populace. Many believed that the Allied Nations was for the good of the whole world, that Calrune was once at the centre of the world, and now it is broken off and walled off from the rest of the world. While others believe it is best for Almahna to standalone.

Defences

The city is defended by a large marble wall that surrounds its entire perimeter.

Industry & Trade

Calrune is the centre of trade in Almahna, being the capital city of the country.

Infrastructure

Calrune is built over the cisterns that feed water from the Nile River, the heart of this desert continent. Throughout the city are ancient structures left behind by a golden age long ago; however, much of it is in disrepair or has been destroyed from recent conflicts. Calrune is also built upon the crossroads between the four major port cities of the nation of Almahna, Sapphire Port, Ruby Port, Amethyst Port, and Emerald Port.

Districts

The southern part of the city is the Market District, this is where shops and stands of all kinds can be found. To the west of there is the Colosseum District, which is the home of the Colosseum, as well as the Almahnan Museum of Antiquity. To the north of the city is the Noble District, which is home to the nobility class of Almahna. To the east is the Housing District, home for many lower income people. Some people refer to this district as the slums, because of its poorer population. In the centre of the city sits the Palace District, the seat of the government in Almahna, where you will find The Great Palace as well as The Council Hall. Almahna Academy also used to be located here until its destruction in 2737. After that, when discussions were taking place about rebuilding it in 2740, the suggestion was brought up of taking this opportunity to move it to a district of its own. The Fae'roh accepted this suggestion, and the decision was made to annex a portion of the Noble District and move the Academy to a new district just to the west of there, called the Academy District. The nobility class was pretty upset about this decision and vowed revenge.

In 2741, Calrune was host to the World Fair, and for this major event, and as the population of the city was outstripping housing, creating a major housing shortage, the decision was made to begin construction on a new district to address this demand, expanding to outside the city walls. This new district was called the Precipice District. Some say this has only been a bandage on the situation, and a temporary fix at best.

Assets

Calrune is one of the largest cities in the entire world, and also the most populous city in the world, to where many have called it the Centre of the World. As such, nearly all goods traded through the four ports usually end up here.

Points of interest

The locations in the city that it is most well known for include the Colosseum, The Great Palace, and Almahna Academy, which is now newly rebuilt in a new district all its own, since the old Academy building was destroyed in 2737. The new Almahna Academy and the Academy District in which it now sits opened finally in the month of Conflee in 2744.

The Colosseum has sat largely unused for a number of years since the Fae'roh, controversially, banned the Pro Battle League competitions from being held in Almahna. Many are working and fighting to bring it back.

Tourism

The city of Calrune is called by many the Centre of the World, and as such, it sees more visitors and tourists than anywhere else in Terr'ahna.

Architecture

Buildings are constructed of sandstone.

Geography

Calrune is built upon the ruins of the so-called First City, Kairus, also known as the City Beneath the Sands, in the middle of a vast open field of sand dunes, in Northern Almahna's desert clime. It sits near the foot of the massive mountain range stretching across the centre of the continent, Mount Hellfire. A reservoir system was built ages ago to feed water from the Nile River hundreds of miles away into the city. Thus, it is known as the Golden Oasis for its many spectacular water features throughout the city.

Climate

Calrune sits in the southernmost part of Northern Almahna, which is a hot, barren, sandy desert climate. Thankfully, it is also home to the most extensive irrigation and sewer system in the world, and brings water in from the Nile River.

Natural Resources

Water is fed in from the Nile River through a man-made reservoir system. There are farms around the outside perimeter of the city which cultivate a variety of vegetables and other plants that can thrive in these conditions, given regular water from the Nile River.
