Caelsimil

Written by Erick V and Kal V
Caelsimil is a country on the easternmost portion of the Caelsimilan Peninsula, located on the continent Yneros. It is bordered by the Basc Sea to the east and north, the Waveless Sea to the south, and Teme-Rasadar to the west. It, along with two other administrative areas, make up the United Lands of Caelsimil Teme-Rasadar.

Structure

Caelsimil is run as a theocratic duodictatorship, with the highest power shared between the Heirophant (who is appointed by various local religious leaders after convening with the gods,) and the Anointed General, who is chosen by the Heirophant directly. Together, they maintain direct, unified control over the nation's lands. They recognize three types of territories, each with a degree of local governance.   Cities and towns enjoy a measure of autonomy, particularly in respect to adjusting specific rights and taxes within their jurisdictions. It is the primary responsibility of Marshal Wardens to oversee the safety and protection of the residents under their watch. Smaller religious communities are characterized by tighter controls on access and stricter trade regulations to preserve their sanctity and reflect their intended purpose. Vicars guide the spiritual and communal life of these distinct communities. The few remaining indigenous tribes retain their own traditional form of governance under the protection of the state. Their territory is simply called tribal land.

Culture

Much of Caelsimil's culture, like its leadership, is entrenched both in military discipline and religious reverence. They inherited these values from the original pilgrims who journeyed through the Lendover Mountains. Determination and willpower were required to survive the harsh, sometimes punishing journey, and it was the piety and sacrifices made by their leaders that ensured their safe passage. A past of religious persecution within their holy land has also shaped the culture of Caelsimil, and they view their government as righteous protectors chosen by the gods to defend their people.

History

The native tribes of Caelsimil, whose people were called Simoril, were made up historically of subsistence farmers who organized into large clans. These clans included roughly 5 to 30 individual groups each that all spoke a shared language and worshiped the same gods of harvest who protected them from local threats (namely, Estian slavers and pirates, and drow who traveled up from the Underdark to do trade).   Following prosecution in the Alterrosot, pilgrims traveled through the Lendover Mountains into Simoril territory, seeing potential in the peninsula as untamed farmland. They formed a covenant with the existing clans, raising city-states both to protect and to market the tribal people's crops and live harmoniously. It was the rise of the the first catiff Jolene Canterbury, also known as the Oracle of Bones, that would throw all of this into disarray. A religious extremist, she saw her peoples' quick acceptance of the Simoril's pantheon and religious practices as abhorrent. It was her War of Life and Strife that brought about the end to the initial period of peace and the eventual downfall of the clans' power and influence.   The once independent city-states united against Canterbury, forming into the nation of Caelsimil. Hordes of undead rose and marched across the land at the Oracle of Bones's direction, slaying the living and spreading weaponized mummy rot. The few native tribes remaining after her scourge entered a prolonged period of isolation, separating themselves from the newly formed nation.   What followed was a period of rebuilding. Old tribal territory sat abandoned by the living, occupied only by lingering undead yet to be removed. Wandering heroes and adventurers took up arms to see this duty through and were rewarded by the growing nation for their job. It was in this way that Caelsimil settled through many areas scourged by the war, cleaning up the mess that the Oracle of Bones left behind.   Once the nation was formally established, a military power would launch a crusade against Teme-Rasadar, seeking to free their cousins persecuted under their neighboring nation. A quagmire of a war dragged on for twenty years before a resolution in the form of a unification effort was successfully led by the Oracle (titular) Industria Cellini, as well as her allies: Zakina Kociak-Falenmir, Elathera Clearwater, and Rikius Falenmir. Working with representatives from the pre-Reformation Exemplarate in Teme-Rasadar, they formed the United Lands of Caelsimil Teme-Rasadar, and freed their holy land (now known as the Administrative Zone.)
