Necropolis
Necropolis is a large town on the Caelsimilan Peninsula, within the continent of Yneros. It is located on the eastern portion of Caelsimil, roughly 100 miles northeast of its capital Trieste. It is near the Shyali Range on its west side. Necropolis is famous for its population, which is comprised primarily of sapient undead.
Demographics
Two-thirds of the inhabitants are undead in nature, ranging from zombies to vampires to even specters. The growing population of mortals consist of folks displaced from their original homes from famine and their descendants, members of the Order and their families, or people who have taken an interest in the town's growth potential and taken up trade. Notable professions include logging, farming, carpentry, and textile workers- although these are far from the only jobs available within the town.
Defences
While there are trained guards, much of the town's protection is thanks to a crypt thing that the locals call the "Whisperer." It can't remember its name nor the life it had before it took up its charge, and it sits motionless at the mouth of its cave until needed. Despite its mysterious nature, it will happily engage in conversation with those who come by to speak with it. Necropolis also utilizes a pack of elusa hounds tasked with keeping a watchful eye on outsiders capable of using magic in case they intend to do harm to Necropolis's residents. There is a level of tension between the undead and mortal residents due to lingering prejudice on the latter's part, but it has subdued in time. Any mortal (with the exception of necromancers) is welcome through the gates so long as they keep their hands- and their magic- to themselves. Mind altering magic is forbidden within the town walls and failure to abide by the ban can lead to unfortunate consequences.
A wall was constructed at the southern end of the town to shield it from any prying eyes on the road nearby.
Industry & Trade
Necropolis has several shops, including a textile shop that's decorated with brightly colored banners and streamers. There's a blacksmith that operates around the clock thanks to its undead shopkeep. Other shops include an armoror, several inns and general stores, and an open marketplace near the main gate. Mortal citizens can find fresh goods daily that are imported from nearby locales.
The town mainly keeps itself afloat with logging operations. With the world still carrying prejudice against undead, it's too dangerous to open their gates to every traveler that passes by. Those with the ability to disguise themselves through magic are tasked with establishing trade routes with trusted towns and villages. Through these places, Necropolis is able to sell timber in bulk to many companies, their biggest orders usually coming from military encampments. Necropolis is also involved in the fur trade. Many of its citizens have taken up hunting as a hobby and after the meat is passed onto the mortals in their walls, they clean up the pelts and sell them to merchant caravans.
History
Once a small settlement known as Atrani, the town was attacked by witchfire. With its resident population rapidly diminishing, Jordeira Ferus took a contract to kill the creature that laid havoc on the city. By the time the job was done, the remaining survivors had fled, leaving Atrani a ghost town. With none to occupy it, the monster hunter decided to claim the remains of the settlement for himself and his partner Lucky Kociak, with the purpose of creating a home for the wandering undead of the world who had nowhere else they could safely gather- a dream of his. With other duties to attend to, he formed a de-facto council (known as the Grayveils) to build and operate Necropolis in his frequent absence.
With permission from the Grayveils, the Order of the Oracle's Eye set up a lodge on the northern side of town, known as the Grey Order. In order to go about their business undisturbed within the city, they signed an agreement with the council stating they would provide protection to Necropolis when necessary.
Geography
The town is located within a forest clearing beneath sheer cliffs. These cliffs form a natural barrier around much of Necropolis, protecting it from the elements and keeping it out of sight. A wall was constructed at the southern end of the town to shield it from any prying eyes on the road nearby. The cavern systems that wrap around Necropolis have been repurposed as a compound for undead undergoing the ritual Transfiguration: Begin Anew.
