Mana Cessation

Dunamostasis

Medically referred to as Dunamostasis, Mana Cessation is the failure in the flow of Mana through the Mana System. It is different from Mana Depletion, which is the absence of purified Mana in the Mana Pool, and is instead characterised by parts of the Mana System shutting down and then degrading and dispersing the Mana within, rather than containing it.

Mana Cessation falls into one of three types depending on where in the Mana it presents: Vesical Dunamostasis (the Mana Pool), Prevesical Dunamostasis (before the Mana Pool), and Postvesical Dunamostasis (after the Mana Pool). Mana Cessation occurring in two parts of the Mana System is known as Multidunamostasis, and is considered an advancement of Mana Cessation. When all three parts of the system cease flow, it is known as Pandunamostasis and is treated as a separate type of condition, as the treatment for it is very different.

Mana Cessation is a relatively uncommon condition, and is normally brought about as a response to external stimuli (such as a complete Anti-Magic event) or in response to another condition triggering the Mana System's safeguards. For example, an instance of Hyperdunamia (Mana Excess) may trigger Mana Cessation in the Mana Pool in order to prevent Dunamorrhagia (Mana Overload).

Causes

Mana Cessation typically has two causes: external influence that disrupts the normal Mana flow within the System, or an internal safeguard of the Mana System triggering a rapid reflex response. Of these causes, internal causes are often the result of another condition threatening the stability of the Mana System and are generally considered similar to an immune response. These responses can sometimes be triggered by minor conditions that would otherwise not result in Mana Cessation, signalling that a sufferer may be suffering from a Dunamic Autoimmune Disorder.

External influences can include Mana-influencing spells, Anti-Magic, Dunamic Anomalies, and even some types of potion or consumable.

Symptoms

The most obvious symptom for Mana Cessation is the incorrect operation of Mana through the Mana System, though this can vary depending on the location of the Cessation. Postvesical Mana Cessation is often characterised by an inability to form a Weave Channel or Spellcasting Vessels, and thus the failure of spellcasting. Vesical Mana Cessation typically manifests in a manner similar to Mana Depletion, but can be further identified by the ineffectiveness of Mana Potions to correct the depletion. Prevesical Mana Cessation is most often identified by an inability to replenish Mana in the Mana Pool (similar to Bradydunamikatharsis) and the failure of Innate abilities (as the Innate Spellcasting Vessels are connected directly to the Prevesical Mana Vessels, not the Mana Pool).

Other symptoms of Mana Cessation include mild headaches, nausea, a phantom tingling sensation in the area associated with the Cessation location, and a sensation of disconnect or disorientation.

Treatment

Where Mana Cessation is caused by internal factors and conditions, the source of those conditions must be removed or treated before the Cessation itself can be addressed. That being said, once the condition causing the Cessation is removed, the Mana System typically restarts itself with little to no external interference.

Likewise, where external factors are involved, the patient must remove the cause of the Cessation or remove themselves from the location of the cause. Cessation caused by spells, potions, or other consumables can often be waited out and the effects will wear off on their own. However, situations such as exposure to Dunamic Anomalies can be more difficult to predict and would require a full checkup.

The process of Mana System Restoration can be hastened by Dunamigenic potions, which encourage the process of Dunamigenesis and thus the restoration of active Dunamocytes.

Prognosis

Mana Cessation in a singular part of the Mana System is typically not considered fatal when it occurs in the Mana Pool or Weave Channel, and will most often resolve itself once the cause of the Cessation is addressed. However, Cessation in the Prevesical Mana Vessels has a higher chance of leading to fatality if left untreated as it prevents not only the refilling of the Mana Pool, but also the operation of the Innate Spellcasting Vessels. This form of Cessation has the highest chance of leading to more serious conditions, such as Mana Rot.

Multidunamostasis is considered more serious and can require a much longer course of treatment to completely recover, though the severity can also depend on whether the Prevesical Mana Vessels are impacted.

Sequela

Multiple instances of Mana Cessation over a relatively short period of time or prolonged Cessation events can result in additional mild Dunamic Conditions such as Mana Hiccups and Mana Bloat, or more serious ones along the lines of Mana Depletion and Mana Rot. Recovery from Mana Cessation can sometimes be complicated by the presence of high intensity magic events, or repeated exposure to Mana Ceasing-events or substances.

Affected Groups

Mana Cessation can impact anyone born with a Mana System, regardless of the extent of their System.
