Mana Hiccups

Dunavasospasms

Mana Hiccups, known medically as Dunavasospasms and also called Dunamic Hiccups, are an involuntary contraction of the Insitudunavaso System (Innate Mana Vessels) or the Weave Channel and Exdunathric System (Spellcasting Vessels). Typically considered a harmless Dunamic Medical Condition, Mana Hiccups are more irritating than dangerous, though spasms involving the Weave Channel and Spellcasting Vessels can be prone to more volatile effects if symptoms persist.

Mana Hiccups are typically caused by an irritation within the Mana System, most often a Dunamic Pulse or external magical effect. They are usually an involuntary action caused by a Dunamic Reflex Arc, triggered by the detection of irritations within the system. The resulting Mana Hiccup forces the irritation to be dispelled or expelled by the Dunamic System, returning it to a state of balance. Most episodes of Mana Hiccups last up to half an hour, though some can last significantly longer, and they can occur singularly or in bouts. Mana Hiccups tend to maintain a relatively constant rhythm and generally require no intervention, though chronic or irregularly occurring hiccups may require medical attention. Unlike regular hiccups, Mana Hiccups occur more frequently with age.

Spasms in the Weave Channel and Spellcasting Vessels are significantly rarer than those in the Innate Vessels, meaning that Species with innate magical abilities, such as Elves, Ginnaya, and Navians, are more prone to Mana Hiccups than Species without, such as Humans and Dwarves. Changelings are also prone to Mana Hiccups due to the presence of Innate Mana Vessels powering their shapechanging abilities, despite them not possessing typical magical talents. They are considered a common magical condition.

Causes

Mana Hiccups are typically caused by the Dunamic System responding to an irritation within the Innate Spellcasting Vessels or Weave Channel. This irritation is usually caused by harmless magical effects, such as a Dunamic Pulse, exposure to raw Mana, incidental magical waves from dispelled Magic Circles, or the aftereffects of long term magic. Mana Hiccups can also be caused by irritations from Mana Explosions or exposure to magical expulsions during potion-crafting.

In rare occasions, Mana Hiccups can be caused by other issues in the Mana System, such as a Dunamic Embolism or an issue with the Dunamocytes in the Mana System.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Mana Hiccups typically manifest as an involuntary release of minor magics accompanied by a short, mild mana-shock and an unexpected shoulder, wrist, and neck tremor, like a short shiver. The minor magics tend to present as flashes of light or a small shower of sparkles, though other Thaumaturgic effects have been documented. Some sufferers will also physically squeak during a Mana Hiccup, usually from the surprise associated with the mana-shock.

In some extreme cases, Mana Hiccups can result in the accidental discharge of low-level spell-like effects, expending an equivalent amount of Mana to a Tier 1 and no higher than a Tier 2 spell.

Treatment

As with standard hiccups, Mana Hiccups typically resolve themselves without any intervention and the best course of treatment is simply to wait them out. Medical intervention from a Medical Dunamologist (Mana Specialist) is typically only required in prolonged or severe cases.

Prognosis

Mana Hiccups are typically irritating but not fatal, and generally last thirty minutes or less.

Prolonged Mana Hiccups can cause difficulties with everyday living, but are again not fatal in and of themselves.

Affected Groups

Anyone with a Mana System can be affected by Mana Hiccups, though those with innate magical abilities are more prone to them than those without. Mana Hiccups can also affect non-Sapient creatures with Mana Systems, such as Flash Dogs, Almiraj, and Mortifers.
