Dunamic Embolism
A Dunamic Embolism, also known as a Mana Clot, is a blockage within the Mana System caused by a Dunamic Embolus blocking the vessels of the Mana System. These Emboli are typically formed by the errant condensing of raw or impure Mana, though can also be caused by the implantation of foreign Mana within the System.
An embolism can cause a partial or complete blockage of flow within the effected vessel. While typically considered non-fatal in themselves, untreated Dunamic Embolisms can lead to complications within the Mana System, which can themselves lead to damage or deterioration within the System. In the worst case scenarios, Dunamic Embolisms may indirectly lead to death by causing or exacerbating other conditions, such as Dunamostasis and Hypodunamia.
While considered one of the more common Dunamic Conditions, Dunamic Embolisms are still considered medically uncommon with approximately 1 in 2000 susceptible people suffering from one. Dunamic Embolisms typically occur singularly, though there are extremely rare cases where patients suffer from multiple Clots.
Causes
Mana Clots typically form when raw or improperly purified Mana forms a clump of "hardened" Mana. These clumps resemble lumps of Dunamocytes and can become lodged within the Dunamic System. In very rare cases, Clots form when foreign Mana is implanted within the Dunamic System and that Mana reacts with the patient's Mana to form an Embolus.
Symptoms
Symptoms of a Mana Clot include a decreased efficiency in Mana Replenishment (in the case of a Prevesical Embolism) or decreased efficiency/ability in spellcasting in the case of Postvesical Embolism. Repeated cases of Hypodunamia or Dunamostasis can often be caused by a Mana Clot.
Other symptoms of Dunamic Embolism include burning sensations through the body while spellcasting (the location of which is typically tied to the location of the Embolus) or a sensation of feeling "empty" or "drained" of Mana for no reason.
Treatment
Dunamic Embolisms are typically treated by targeted insertion of low strength Force energy into the Mana System to gently break apart the embolus. While the process is generally considered an invasive procedure due to Force energy being pushed into the Mana System, it is relatively painless, though some patients report uncomfortable sensations similar to pins and needles.
It is possible to treat Mana Embolisms with potions if a Mana Specialist is not available to perform the procedure, however they are considered more dangerous as excess consumption can weaken, or even completely breakdown, the Dunamocytes of the Mana System alongside the clot.
Prognosis
Dunamic Embolisms are rarely fatal on their own, but can contribute to or exacerbate other conditions which can then lead to death. In most cases, sufferers of Dunamic Embolisms can continue to live a long life, though will find their spellcasting ability diminished.
Prevesical Dumanic Embolisms are more common, making up 85% of the documented cases. Survival rates for Prevesical Embolisms are generally high, with 97% of sufferers either living with the condition, or completely recovering from it.
Postvesical Embolisms are much rarer, accounting for 12% of documented cases. These kinds of Embolisms often see more people seeking full treatment, as it can completely inhibit a person's ability to cast spells. 95% of sufferers completely recover from Postvesical Embolisms, though they can be harder to treat if they repeatedly occur within the Dunathra or Exdunathric System.
Systemic Dunamic Embolism is when multiple Emboli form within the system. These embolisms are significantly more dangerous than a singular embolism, and occur in only 3% of documented cases. While the survival rate is still above 75%, that statistic decreases the longer a sufferer fails to see a Mana Specialist.
Sequela
Dunamic Embolisms can often trigger or exacerbate other Mana-Flow Conditions, such as Dunamostasis and Hypodunamia. They can also, in extreme cases of prolonged blockage, lead to Dunamangiolysis, or even the complete deterioration of the Mana System.
Affected Groups
Anyone with a full or partial Mana System can suffer from Dunamic Embolisms, and it will typically effect 1 in 2000 susceptible people.
