Undead

Death Is Just The Beginning

"When I saw the ghost, I did not feel terror. I felt pity. Terror came later, when I realized it had been dead for three hundred years and still could not leave."
— From The Widow of Grey Hollow
Undead are creatures that have died but continue to exist through supernatural means. Rather than passing on naturally, they are sustained by magic, curses, divine power, or other unnatural forces. Because of this, undead are often viewed as a violation of the natural cycle of life and death.   The origins of undead vary widely. Some are created through dark magic that reanimates a corpse after death. Others arise from powerful emotions, unfinished business, curses, or the influence of evil forces. In some cases, a creature may willingly seek undeath in order to gain power, avoid death, or continue pursuing its goals.   Undead can take many forms. Some are little more than animated remains, while others retain memories, intelligence, and personalities from their former lives. Their appearance often reflects the condition of the body or spirit from which they were created. Some resemble walking skeletons or decaying corpses, while others appear almost unchanged from the living beings they once were.   The intelligence of undead creatures varies greatly. Some are mindless servants that follow simple commands without question. Others are fully aware and capable of planning, learning, and pursuing long term ambitions. Intelligent undead may rule kingdoms, command armies, conduct magical research, or manipulate events from the shadows.   Many undead possess abilities tied to their unnatural existence. Some are resistant to injury, while others can spread curses, drain life energy, or inspire fear in those around them. Because they are no longer truly alive, many undead do not require food, water, sleep, or air.   Undead are commonly associated with graveyards, crypts, battlefields, ruins, and other places connected to death. Their presence often creates an atmosphere of dread and unease. Local communities frequently view undead as dangerous threats, especially when they begin to gather in large numbers.   Most cultures regard undeath with fear or suspicion. Religious traditions often teach that the dead should rest peacefully and that disturbing this process is unnatural. As a result, undead are frequently opposed by priests, paladins, and others dedicated to protecting the natural order.   Common examples of undead include skeletons, zombies, ghosts, wights, vampires, and liches. While these creatures differ greatly in appearance and intelligence, they all share one defining trait. They are beings that continue to exist after death through supernatural means.   Undead represent the unsettling boundary between life and death. They serve as reminders that some forces can linger beyond the grave and that not every soul or body finds its proper rest.
