Arcanum Imperium
The Arcanum Imperium is the arcane magic branch of the Luisant Empire under the authority of the Empereur, and paralleled in authority with the branches of the La Cour and Imperial Army.
The Arcanum Imperium operates as a near-autonomous organisation, integrates into military regiments and operations, and coordinates with administrative authorities on local projects. They operate most arcane education facilities within the Empire, conduct magical research, experimentation, and projects, investigate magical incidents, events, or phenomenon, and field their own military units. They generally move freely between jurisdictions, with largely untethered assignments and responsibilities.
Structure
Each rank and position within the hierarchy has authority over someone with a lower rank, either as a direct report, or indirectly when applicable.
Arcanist Suprême
The Empereur's arcane counsel on all magical matters within the Empire. Though commonly held by an individual, the title is often given to a handful of arcanists of differing specialties and expertise. Outside of directly reporting to the sovereign and determining certain assignments for enshrined positions, the Arcanist Suprême are generally on par with all other arcanists, and expected to confer with a relevant council on any matters extending beyond their established purview.
Arcanist
Arcanists are the pinnacle of arcane practitioners within the Empire, and by extension likely Theos. Capable across a number of fields, arcanists generally achieve their title through excelling in a particular field of study and expertise. Such advancement in their specialisation affords them practically free reign on their own projects, and command over the adepts and neophytes of the Arcanum to help carry them out. Arcanists will also consult or advise on any magic-relevant matters for law enforcement, military, and administrative authorities, or assign their adepts to do so where appropriate.
Adept
Adepts are proven magic users who have mastered the general curriculum set by the Arcanum. Some will continue their formal studies to specialise further or pursue academic careers, or sign on to serve or assist arcanists in various projects or stations. Others will enlist in the Imperial Army, and bring their arcane skills and knowledge to military or law enforcement applications. Others still will take their acquired skills outside of state uses, pursuing their own projects or professions.
Neophyte
Neophytes are the wizards-in-training of the Arcanum Imperium. After passing a series of entry-level tests (or exhibiting one of a number of designated indicators), neophytes are enrolled and set to studying in one of a number of educational institutions, on the journey to mastering some aspect of their magic ability. Given the prevalence for arcane potential in elves, and the dangers of unskilled or uninformed magic use, any and all residents of the Empire are free and encouraged to apply and test.
