Sunchester

Introduction

“No wine tastes as good as that first glass of Honeydew at sunset.”

Perched high upon the Sunset Cliffs, the village of Sunchester overlooks the sea of Syralis like a crown of stone and vines. Barely eight hundred souls live here, yet travelers across Keraian know its name for two reasons: its sunsets and its wine. Each evening the cliffs ignite with color. The sun sinks slowly into the sea while the sky burns in layers of amber, rose, and molten gold. Locals say the horizon itself is drunk on Sunchester’s vineyards.

The village survives on grapes and the craft of turning them into something finer. Terraced vineyards spill down the slopes surrounding the settlement, their vines carefully tended by families whose names have been tied to the soil for generations. Wine is not simply trade here; it is memory, ritual, and pride.

Geography

Sunchester sits atop a wind-carved plateau overlooking the Sunset Cliffs, a dramatic wall of stone that plunges nearly two hundred feet into the sea below. The land surrounding the village is extremelly fertile. Warm coastal air, mineral-rich soil, and steady salty, sea winds create perfect conditions for vineyards. Rows of grapevines ripple across the hillsides like green waves, broken only by stone paths, watch huts, and the occasional farmhouse.

Several narrow trails descend the cliffs to hidden coves where fishermen launch small boats at dawn. The monastery of the Fourfold Path stands slightly apart from the village on a neighboring ridge. From its terraces one can see both the sea and the patchwork of vineyards below, a view monks claim is ideal for contemplation.

Governance

Sunchester is governed by a village council of seven members, elected from among the local vineyard families and merchants. The council handles disputes, trade agreements, and the yearly organization of the harvest season. Though modest in size, the council holds considerable influence because Sunchester’s wines travel across much of Keraian.

The current mayor, Amelia Carter, serves as both mediator and steward of the village’s prosperity. Under her leadership the council has focused on maintaining strict quality standards for the region’s wine; something locals defend with near-religious fervor.

Traditions & Customs

The Sunset Vigil

Every harvest season begins with a simple ritual. On the first evening of the harvest, villagers gather along the cliffs carrying lanterns and cups of the previous year’s wine. When the sun touches the sea, everyone drinks in silence. It is said this honors both the land and the years that shaped the vines.

The Blessing of the First Barrel

The first completed barrel of each harvest is carried to the Monastery of the Fourfold Path. There, monks of Idril perform a brief blessing invoking balance between soil, water, sun, and wind; the four elements believed to shape Sunchester’s grapes. Only after this blessing may the rest of the wine be sold.

The Festival of the Setting Sun

Sunchester’s most famous celebration is the Festival of the Setting Sun, held each year at the end of the harvest. For three days the village becomes a sea of lanterns, music, and wine. Long wooden tables are set along the cliffs while musicians perform and traveling merchants set up stalls among the vineyards. The festival ends with the Grand Toast, when every visitor and villager raises a glass as the sun disappears beneath the ocean.
