Stone Bridge

Introduction

Stone Bridge is a picturesque mountain village nestled among the two highest peaks of Dragonspire range. Home to approximately 1,000 residents, the majority of whom are humans, the village's population also includes a few half-elves, halflings, and dwarves. The settlement derives its name from the ruins of an ancient stone bridge of colossal proportions- known as Titan's Arch- rumored to have once connected the two towering mountain peaks.

Geography

The village sits atop a plateau at an altitude of about 700 meters, situated between the two highest peaks of Dragonspire mountains: Thunderpeak and Kordath Summit. A small river, known as Ramas, winds its way through the village, providing essential water and flows west, into Mistveil Lake, the largest of the three lakes surrounding the capital city of Thandor. The river is the village's lifeline, sustaining both the people and the land. The landscape is mostly wild and the closest settlement to Stone Bridge is the small town of Rivermist, located four days west and accessible via a well traveled path. The village is dotted with cozy homes constructed primarily of stone, while its roads are often winding and poorly maintained, adding to the quaint, untamed atmosphere.

Goverment

Stone Bridge is governed by a council of four elders, the oldest members of the community, who hold their positions until death. When any of the members dies, another one is chosen to take his place- always one of the eldest of the village. The decisions of the council regarding any issue must be unanimous, a rule that occasionaly leads to delays, disaggrements and challenges. The current council consists of three men and one woman. Among them is a wealthy half-elf named Carlyle Hancrest, who had recently inherited his family’s beekeeping business, making him one of the richest and most prominent figure in the village.

Daily Life

The villagers primarily engage in animal husbandry and beekeeping, and it is said they produce the finest honey in the empire. Some work as lumberjacks or in nearby quarries, while agricultural activities are limited due to the scarcity of fertile land. The few fields that do exist are primarily used for tobacco cultivation. The people of Stone Bridge are deeply traditional and closely connected to their customs. They are slow to trust outsiders, especially arcane spellcasters, and while they are generally kindhearted, hospitality is not one of their virtues.

Traditions and Customs

The people of Stone Bridge are highly protective of their customs. They place great value on preserving traditions and hold special festivals and organized rituals to honor their beliefs and heritage. These are their most important customs.

Agion's Birth

On the tenth day of Zinxadia, the fourth month of autumn, the people of Stone Bridge celebrate the life of Agion Condore, the last saint of Novirath, god of life and virtue. After his death, Agion was declared a saint by The Suntouched, the official church of Novirath and it is customary for his birth to be celebrated, and the people of Stone Bridge uphold this tradition with great reverence.

During this time of year, the people of Stone Bridge decorate their homes with numerous lanterns that burn throughout the night. They also prepare a special dish called Lumen Porridge, made with honey, wheat, plums, and pomegranate seeds, simmered in a bone marrow broth that has been prepared and preserved for an entire year specifically for this day. The whole village then gathers in the settlement's center to share the meal together, celebrating the life of the saint.

Iriswing Chirp

At the dawn of spring, on the first day of the month Oneiria, the village children craft effigies of a migratory bird known as the Iriswing using dirt, threads, leaves, and other common materials. These birds resemble small cranes, about the size of swallows, and have iridescent feathers that showcase all the colors of the rainbow. Their flocks return to the region during the hottest months of the year, and their arrival is considered a sign of the coming of spring. This gives them the nickname "Messengers of Spring".

As the children sing songs praising the Iriswings, they distribute the effigies to villagers, going knocking door to door, who then place them in their gardens, believing that the birds will use them to build their nests. Having an effigy claimed by the birds is thought to bring great luck to the home it came from.

Iriswings, Iriswings, fly from the sky,

With feathers of rainbows so high.

Through valleys and seas, your journey is grand,

You bring luck and spring to our homes and land.

Tiny and swift, on wings you soar,

From distant lands, you return once more.

Your nests you will build in the warmth of the sun,

Our gardens await, your work’s just begun.

Iriswings, Iriswings, find shelter and rest,

For here in our village, you’re welcome as guests.

We offer you homes, made of leaves and thread,

To guard and protect where you lay your head.

With your songs and your flight, you bless us anew,

The season of warmth is returned by you.

So Iriswings, Iriswings, sing as you fly,

Bringing hope and good fortune from the sky.

— "Iriswings return", folk song of Stone Bridge

The Beekeeping Festival

To celebrate their renowned beekeeping industry, the villagers host an annual Honey Festival. This lively event, held for a whole week in late summer during the month Ordulan, features various activities such as:

  1. Honey Tasting Contests: Villagers showcase their finest honey products, competing for the title of "Best Honey" in the village.
  2. Beekeeping Demonstrations: Local beekeepers share their knowledge and techniques, providing insights into the art of beekeeping.
  3. Storytelling Sessions: Elders recount local legends and folk tales around the fire, emphasizing the rich cultural heritage of Stone Bridge.
  4. Craft Stalls: Artisans sell honey-infused products such as candles, soaps, and sweet treats, fostering community engagement and economic growth.
  5. Games and Races: Children and adults participate in games related to beekeeping, such as “Honey Hunt,” where participants search for hidden jars of honey around the village.

The festival serves to strengthen community bonds and attract visitors from neighboring towns, enhancing trade relations.

Places of Importance

Titan's Arch

Towering above the village, this colossal, ancient bridge spans the two highest peaks of Dragonspire mountains: Thunderpeak and Kordath Summit. Known as Titan's Arch, it is believed by some to have been built by storm giants long ago, while others speak of it as a monument to Silanthas, the god of trade, travel, and roads. Though broken and unusable now, the bridge remains an important landmark and a symbol of the village’s connection to both myth and history.

Veilshade Grove

Just on the outskirts of the village lies the mysterious Veilshade Grove, a small remnant of what was once a vast forest covering the entire plateau. Legends tell that the grove began to shrink after the unjust death of Princess Alora, a former empress of Keraian and a native of Iriswing, the village that stood where Stone Bridge now lies. The grove is still regarded with awe and fear, and many believe its shrinking was a curse tied to the downfall of Iriswing.

Wyrms Crossing

This steep and treacherous path winds its way up to Thunderpeak, the lower of the two mountains. Despite its perilous nature, it is said to be the shortest route to one end of the Titan's Arch. The path, seldom used except by the bravest or most desperate travelers, is fraught with danger, but it offers a rare and close glimpse of the bridge's crumbling remains.

Bubbling Stew

As the village lacks a proper inn, The Bubbling Stew is the closest thing to a public gathering place for travelers. This little, cozy tavern is where villagers gather after a long day of work to share a meal and tales, while outsiders who gain the trust of the locals may find a room to rent. With only three rooms available, accommodations are limited, but the warmth and hearty food make it a beloved spot among those who live in or visit the village.

The Emberforge

Once owned by Tobias Greymoor, one of the village council members, Emberforge is now managed by his grandson, Lesli Greymoor who lacks both the passion and skill for smithing. However, the true craft lies in the hands of Tobias’ old assistant, Elenor Sanders, a skilled blacksmith. Even though Elenor is the one maintaining the forge, she feels comfortable of being in the background of the business rather than claim it- probably out of respect to her former mentor. The forge is essential to the village for producing tools and metal goods.

Shrine of Many

In the center of the village lies a humble but well-visited shrine dedicated to multiple gods, including Novirath, Silanthas, Siona and Ondrul. Villagers visit the shrine regularly to offer prayers, particularly before festivals and important events.

Hancrest Estate

The richest man in the village, Carlyle Hancrest, inherited his family’s beekeeping business, which has thrived for generations. The estate is known for producing the finest honey in the empire, the reknowned and sought after "Hancrest gold" and the beekeeping fields are the pride of Stone Bridge. Despite his noble heritage being overshadowed by his birth as a bastard, Carlyle’s success has made him one of the most influential figures in the village; something that recently granded him a seat in the village council.

Ruins of Iriswing

To the east of the village lie the ruins of Iriswing, the tragic settlement that Stone Bridge was built upon. Once a bustling village, it now stands as a haunting reminder of the past. The people of Stone Bridge refuse to speak of Iriswing’s fall, and the ruins are largely avoided, believed to be cursed or, at the very least, haunted by the misfortunes that led to its demise.
