Stone Bridge
Introduction
Stone Bridge is a picturesque mountain village nestled among the two highest peaks of Dragonspire range. Home to approximately 1,000 residents, the majority of whom are humans, the village's population also includes a few half-elves, halflings, and dwarves. The settlement derives its name from the ruins of an ancient stone bridge of colossal proportions- known as Titan's Arch- rumored to have once connected the two towering mountain peaks.
Geography
The village sits atop a plateau at an altitude of about 700 meters, situated between the two highest peaks of Dragonspire mountains: Thunderpeak and Kordath Summit. A small river, known as Ramas, winds its way through the village, providing essential water and flows west, into Mistveil Lake, the largest of the three lakes surrounding the capital city of Thandor. The river is the village's lifeline, sustaining both the people and the land. The landscape is mostly wild and the closest settlement to Stone Bridge is the small town of Rivermist, located four days west and accessible via a well traveled path. The village is dotted with cozy homes constructed primarily of stone, while its roads are often winding and poorly maintained, adding to the quaint, untamed atmosphere.
Goverment
Stone Bridge is governed by a council of four elders, the oldest members of the community, who hold their positions until death. When any of the members dies, another one is chosen to take his place- always one of the eldest of the village. The decisions of the council regarding any issue must be unanimous, a rule that occasionaly leads to delays, disaggrements and challenges. The current council consists of three men and one woman. Among them is a wealthy half-elf named Carlyle Hancrest, who had recently inherited his family’s beekeeping business, making him one of the richest and most prominent figure in the village.
Daily Life
The villagers primarily engage in animal husbandry and beekeeping, and it is said they produce the finest honey in the empire. Some work as lumberjacks or in nearby quarries, while agricultural activities are limited due to the scarcity of fertile land. The few fields that do exist are primarily used for tobacco cultivation. The people of Stone Bridge are deeply traditional and closely connected to their customs. They are slow to trust outsiders, especially arcane spellcasters, and while they are generally kindhearted, hospitality is not one of their virtues.
Traditions and Customs
The people of Stone Bridge are highly protective of their customs. They place great value on preserving traditions and hold special festivals and organized rituals to honor their beliefs and heritage. These are their most important customs.
Agion's Birth
On the tenth day of Zinxadia, the fourth month of autumn, the people of Stone Bridge celebrate the life of Agion Condore, the last saint of Novirath, god of life and virtue. After his death, Agion was declared a saint by The Suntouched, the official church of Novirath and it is customary for his birth to be celebrated, and the people of Stone Bridge uphold this tradition with great reverence.
During this time of year, the people of Stone Bridge decorate their homes with numerous lanterns that burn throughout the night. They also prepare a special dish called Lumen Porridge, made with honey, wheat, plums, and pomegranate seeds, simmered in a bone marrow broth that has been prepared and preserved for an entire year specifically for this day. The whole village then gathers in the settlement's center to share the meal together, celebrating the life of the saint.
Iriswing Chirp
At the dawn of spring, on the first day of the month Oneiria, the village children craft effigies of a migratory bird known as the Iriswing using dirt, threads, leaves, and other common materials. These birds resemble small cranes, about the size of swallows, and have iridescent feathers that showcase all the colors of the rainbow. Their flocks return to the region during the hottest months of the year, and their arrival is considered a sign of the coming of spring. This gives them the nickname "Messengers of Spring".
As the children sing songs praising the Iriswings, they distribute the effigies to villagers, going knocking door to door, who then place them in their gardens, believing that the birds will use them to build their nests. Having an effigy claimed by the birds is thought to bring great luck to the home it came from.
The Village Council
Iriswings, Iriswings, fly from the sky,
With feathers of rainbows so high.
Through valleys and seas, your journey is grand,
You bring luck and spring to our homes and land.
Tiny and swift, on wings you soar,
From distant lands, you return once more.
Your nests you will build in the warmth of the sun,
Our gardens await, your work’s just begun.
Iriswings, Iriswings, find shelter and rest,
For here in our village, you’re welcome as guests.
We offer you homes, made of leaves and thread,
To guard and protect where you lay your head.
With your songs and your flight, you bless us anew,
The season of warmth is returned by you.
So Iriswings, Iriswings, sing as you fly,
Bringing hope and good fortune from the sky.
