Eslang
Eslang is a rugged river settlement at the southeastern edge of the Illuminated Kingdom, built atop the cliffs of Lion’s Shelf, where the Riverwood cuts through the land below. Founded by retired soldiers and veterans seeking distance from the capital after years of war and service, the village endures through stubborn resilience, trade, and the strength of the people who call it home.
Eslang was founded in 605 EoIF by a group of retired soldiers, hunters, and support personnel who left Grenchester after the death of King Consort Victor Addington. Many had served alongside the Balefire Knights or supported military operations throughout the Illuminated Kingdom, including the response to the Zinril’s Scar Demonic Breaches in 603 EoIF.
Victor Addington is remembered by these settlers not merely as a royal figure but as a man who valued directness, personal conviction, and action over political performance. His death from age and accumulated wounds marked the end of an era for many veterans who had spent years fighting alongside the commander. In the years that followed, a number of those veterans and their families chose to leave Grenchester behind, traveling southeast in search of quieter land and a life built by their own hands.
The settlers eventually reached the elevated cliffs overlooking the Riverwood and established a rough encampment atop what became known as Lion’s Shelf. The terrain offers natural defenses, access to freshwater and river trade, and distance from the capital's growing political weight.
Today, Eslang remains one of the most isolated settlements in the Illuminated Kingdom, with a population of roughly 900 people. Though the Crown formally governs the village, many residents still view Eslang as something its people built themselves rather than something granted to them by distant authority. That mindset shapes nearly every aspect of life within the settlement.

Government
Eslang is governed by Elder Mirala Greyhorn, a Thalorian woman whose commanding presence has become closely tied to the identity of the settlement itself. Her thick mane of gray-streaked hair and broad frame earned her comparisons to a lion long before she ever became Eslang’s leader, though few say such things lightly within her hearing. In practice, Eslang functions through a mixture of communal expectation, military discipline, and practical necessity. Disputes are often settled publicly, work is shared during hardship, and leadership is expected to stand alongside the people rather than above them.
Though distant from the capital, Eslang remains part of the Illuminated Kingdom and continues to pay taxes to Grenchester alongside a tithe to the Illuminated Church. Collection is less frequent than in larger settlements due to the distance involved, but both obligations are taken seriously. Refusing either would risk drawing attention Eslang has little desire to invite. The Illuminated Church also maintains a presence within the village through the Shrine of Ember’s Light and a small number of Lantern Priests, though their influence is quieter than in settlements closer to the capital.
Despite its isolation, Eslang does not consider itself lawless or independent from the Kingdom. The people here still speak of Grenchester with pride, still honor the sacrifices of the Balefire Knights, and still remember King Consort Victor Addington with respect. At the same time, most residents understand that if danger reaches Lion’s Shelf, survival will depend first upon Eslang itself.

Industry & Trade
Despite its isolation, Eslang remains connected to the wider kingdom through the Cobalt Depths. Small trade vessels regularly travel between Eslang, Ozeth Harbor, and occasionally Dundragon or the Fendals, carrying grain, lumber, hides, tools, and preserved goods between the southern settlements of the Illuminated Kingdom.
These trade routes are essential to Eslang’s survival. The village produces enough to sustain itself, but many important supplies still arrive from larger population centers farther west. Delays can quickly place strain upon the settlement, particularly during harsher seasons.
The arrival of trade boats is often treated as a major event within Eslang. News from distant settlements spread quickly through the dock and tavern, and travelers from Dundragon or Ozeth Harbor rarely leave unnoticed. For many villagers, the river serves as both a lifeline to the kingdom and a constant reminder of how far away the rest of the realm truly is.

Geography
Eslang sits upon Lion’s Shelf, a large, elevated plateau overlooking the Riverwood as it cuts south toward the Cobalt Depths sea. Directly north of the settlement lies the Split Riverwood Forest, a vast woodland divided by the Riverwood itself. The western side of the forest rises into hilly and mountainous terrain, where trees thin between rocky slopes and narrow ridges. The eastern forest is older, denser, and far less traveled, filled with thick foliage, towering ancient trees, and lingering stories that few locals dismiss entirely.
The Riverwood defines daily life in Eslang. Fishing boats move constantly along its waters, and waterwheels turn beside its banks. The river also brings danger. The Riverfang Gnolls frequently strike along the water and nearby roads, using fog, river crossings, and wooded terrain to ambush travelers before retreating into the Split Riverwood.
Running west from Eslang is Farstride Road, a long and often difficult road connecting the settlement to Crownwatch East Tower and eventually to Ozeth Harbor. Travel along the route is slow, with Crownwatch East nearly a week away and Ozeth Harbor requiring roughly 10 days under favorable conditions. South of Eslang, the Riverwood empties into the Cobalt Depths. Though the sea lies only a day away, most villagers rarely travel beyond the river’s edge, preferring the familiar dangers of the forest and riverbanks to the uncertainty of open water.

Old Hollowroot
Stories of Old Hollowroot date back to the earliest days of Eslang’s founding. Described as an ancient treant dwelling deep within the eastern Split Riverwood, the being is said to have bark blackened with age and antler-like branches that stretch high into the forest canopy.
The people of Eslang do not worship Old Hollowroot, nor do they consider it entirely safe. Instead, the ancient treant is regarded as an unpredictable force tied to the forest's balance. Hunters claim certain sections of the eastern woods remain untouched by the Riverfang Gnolls, while others insist the forest occasionally shifts to drive travelers away from places they were never meant to reach.
During periods of severe danger, villagers sometimes leave offerings near old river stones at the edge of the Split Riverwood, hoping that Old Hollowroot still watches over the region. Whether the ancient treant truly intervenes or the rituals merely comfort frightened people is a matter of constant debate within Eslang.

Riverfang Gnolls
The Riverfang Gnolls have become one of the most persistent threats to Eslang and the surrounding stretches of the Riverwood. Unlike the larger demonic warbands seen elsewhere in Erenel, the Riverfang operate as territorial hunters, striking quickly before disappearing back into the forest. Their attacks most often target fishing boats, isolated travelers, hunters, and supply wagons moving along Farstride.
In recent years, the gnolls have grown noticeably more organized. Survivors report coordinated ambushes emerging from river fog. Though Eslang itself has not suffered a full assault, the village has been forced to strengthen patrols and restrict travel during certain hours.
Several hunters and veterans believe the Riverfang are being pushed westward by something deeper within the eastern half of the Split Riverwood. Hunting grounds have shifted closer to the settlement. Whatever is causing the change, few within Eslang are eager to investigate it directly.
