Dear Diary,
It has been a week since the debacle with Anaya and Myrrdin and I spent most of that either reading through the books I brought from the archdruid’s cavern, or working in my vegetable garden. Sometimes my own thoughts are the best company.
After this week, we decided to head to Latebra Velora and see if we could convince the Morenthene to strengthen our alliance, and stand against king Ulther. Luke teleported us outside of the gates of the dragon’s city. This of course startled the guards, but Alistan quickly managed to convince them to let us in and send a message to the Morenthene with a request to meet them. The aid we provided to the city in dealing with the Black Knight, as well as the support we provided Rachnar still carries a lot of weight around here.
One of the guards escorted us to the magistrate, who in turn brought us into the cave where the Morenthene resides. When we entered into the inner sanctum, the massive dragon lifted her head and with a somewhat amused snort announced that we only come around bearing bad news, or to come and request aid. Keen intellect on that one. Gael stepped forward and explained why we had come, to strengthen our alliance.
She listened to his explanation and then shrugged her massive shoulders. She was aware of the ritual king Ulther was preparing, and she wasn’t worried about it. We tried to convince her that if he managed to finish the ritual, he would have the combined armies of the Neverhold and Keralon, and would most certainly go on a conquest. The dragon looked at us sceptically and asked if we just wanted her army to fight our war. And then she asked the critical questions, questions we couldn’t answer, because none of us had given it much thought. What is our plan? Are we going to restore the barrier? Depose of Ulther? Then what? What comes after. No, she would only help us if we actually have a plan, not just for the war, but also for what comes after.
At this moment I stepped forward and intervened, as this was not going anywhere. I quickly explained that we were not planning to go to war yet and that we were not here for her army. I don’t know why Gael hadn’t just done this instead. We were there for supplies, not an army. But she had raised valid points which we would need to discuss sooner or later. With my explanation done, she nodded her head and agreed to block the northern passage to Keralon, disallowing them to pass her territory. She also agreed to intensify trade between her city and our growing little town.
With that agreement in place, I then asked her what she knew of Arca Valon. They too are near her border, a bit deeper in the Lorewood. Unfortunately she could not tell us much. Latebra Velora had little contact with Arca Valon so far. The only thing she knew was that the settlement was recent, and consisted mostly of elves, and that it was situated around a portal to the feywild.
Then Alistan stepped forward with a more personal inquiry. Seeing as the Morenthene is a dragon, she might have an answer to the bond between a dragon and its rider, and in particular, about Klaus. She let out a sigh and said that this was a tragic story, and looked at Alistan sternly, saying that for the good of the dragon, the mortal should never forge a bond. Dragons live a lot longer than mortals. She doesn’t know where Klaus is now, but she does know that he is bound to the honour of Keralon, and if there is no honour in Keralon, then so there is also no Klaus. Personally she does not see the point in the concept of honour. So far no-one has managed to explain it to her in a satisfactory way. I smiled inwardly. I agree with her, but too many of the group are invested in a concept they cannot explain.
Before we departed, the Morenthene offered us another solution to our feud with king Ulther. We could build our town on a piece of her territory, and as such be under her protection. It would also put us under her authority of course, which would foil any of our plans, so I politely declined. With that done, we left the cavern, and the city again.
Our next stop, into the lorewood and towards Arca Valon. On the walk there the discussion broke out about the critical questions Morenthene had asked. What will we do when we depose king Ulther? Alistan insists that Gael should take his position, convinced he is the rightful heir to the throne. I just listened and inwardly shook my head. All of these troubles with the king and nobles, and they just want to continue that system. No vision of something different. I know that when this is over, one way or another, I will not be subject to the rule of any royal or noble for that manner.
