Dragonborn

Wyrm Soul

"Humans chase greatness because their lives are short. Dragonborn pursue greatness because they must be worthy of the names they carry."
— Vaelis Starbloom, elven ambassador
Dragonborn are proud draconic humanoids whose lives are shaped by honor, discipline, and the weight of legacy. Though they bear the blood and appearance of dragons, dragonborn are neither their servants nor their descendants in the ordinary sense. They are a people unto themselves, possessing cultures and histories forged through their own triumphs and hardships.   Powerfully built and covered in resilient scales, dragonborn possess broad muzzles, prominent horns, and tails in some bloodlines, though others lack them entirely. Their scales often reflect the colors of ancient dragons, ranging from brilliant metallic hues to deep chromatic tones, though these colors carry no inherent moral significance. A bronze-scaled dragonborn is no more destined for heroism than a red-scaled one is for tyranny.   Honor occupies a central place in many dragonborn societies, though its meaning differs between clans. For some, honor is found in unwavering loyalty. For others, it lies in personal excellence, honesty, or fulfilling obligations regardless of personal cost. Reputation is earned through action rather than inheritance, and even the child of a celebrated champion is expected to prove worthy through individual achievement.   Dragonborn organize themselves into extended clans that preserve histories stretching back centuries. Names carry tremendous significance, often reflecting family accomplishments, ancestral homelands, or legendary deeds. To disgrace one's clan is a burden that many spend a lifetime attempting to repay, while bringing distinction to one's family is considered among the highest achievements.   Many dragonborn become soldiers, judges, artisans, explorers, or scholars. Their natural confidence and disciplined outlook often lead others to mistake them for rigid or humorless. Among trusted companions, however, dragonborn are known for dry wit, fierce loyalty, and celebrations that can last for days after great victories.   Relations with dragons are often complicated. Some dragonborn revere dragons as living embodiments of ancient power. Others view them with suspicion or resentment, believing no creature, regardless of its might, should command unquestioned obedience. Most agree on one point. Sharing blood does not mean sharing purpose.   Among dragonborn, a spoken oath carries extraordinary weight. Written contracts are useful, witnesses are appreciated, but a promise freely given before one's clan is expected to endure long after stone has weathered and kingdoms have fallen.
"I've seen dragonborn lose battles, fortunes, and kingdoms. I've never seen one willingly surrender their honor."
— Simon Lockhart, personal journal
