Aberation
Between The Stars
"We call them unnatural because admitting they are natural would require asking far more disturbing questions."
Aberrations are creatures that do not belong to the natural world. They are strange beings whose bodies, minds, and abilities seem completely different from those of normal creatures. While beasts, dragons, and other monsters follow rules that people can understand, aberrations often break those rules in ways that are difficult to explain.
Many scholars believe aberrations come from places beyond the known planes of existence. The most common theory is that they originate from the Far Realm, a distant and alien place where reality works differently. Creatures from these realms often bring strange powers and unnatural effects wherever they appear.
Aberrations can take many forms. Some have too many eyes, mouths, or limbs. Others may have tentacles, floating bodies, or shapes that seem impossible. Their appearance is often disturbing because it does not resemble anything found in nature. Even experienced adventurers can find themselves unsettled by an aberration's form.
These creatures are often highly intelligent. Unlike many monsters that act on instinct, aberrations usually have plans, goals, and motives of their own. The problem is that their way of thinking can be very different from that of mortal races. Their actions may seem confusing or even meaningless to those who encounter them.
The presence of aberrations can cause strange changes in the world around them. Animals may behave oddly, people may suffer from nightmares, and the landscape itself can become twisted. Areas touched by aberrant influence are often feared and avoided by local communities.
Because of their alien nature, aberrations are commonly associated with madness, forbidden knowledge, and ancient secrets. Many stories describe them as threats from beyond the known world, though some seek only to pursue their own mysterious purposes.
Well known aberrations include beholders, mind flayers, aboleths, grells, and gibbering mouthers. While these creatures differ greatly in appearance and behavior, they all share one important trait. They are outsiders to the natural order of the world and represent forces that are strange, unknowable, and often dangerous.
