Bafigronish
Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
This is the Langauge of the Bafigron Empire, after it was established.
This Langauge is Spoken in Bafigron Empire, Sophia-Hold, Abaisgrians, Waleapians, Balikhanites and Sova Daris.
Phonology
Bafigronish is characterized by clear, sharp vowels and distinct consonants. There are no muddled sounds like in Osiri. Every syllable is articulated with intent, reflecting the Bafigronian obsession with appearance and their masks. Meaning changes based on whether a vowel is held (Long) or clipped (Short).
Unlike the uvular Aluda'arish 'r', the Bafigronish 'r' is a sharp alveolar trill, sounding authoritative and martial.
As the Bafigronian, who prioritize beauty, the language avoids "ugly" guttural stops. If a word sounds too harsh, it is often modified in the High Court dialect to flow more elegantly.
Morphology
Bafigronish uses a complex system of Noun Declensions. A noun’s role (subject, object, possessor) is determined by its suffix.
- Imperator (The Emperor - Subject
- Imperatorem (The Emperor - Object
- Imperatoris (Of the Emperor - Possession
Syntax
Subject-Object-Verb
In formal writing and legal decrees, the verb is placed at the very end.Hyberbaton
Bafigronian nobles love masking their meaning by separating words that belong together (e.g., placing the adjective at the start of a sentence and the noun at the end). This makes the language a puzzle that only the educated can solve. High-status Bafigronians often speak in the passive voice to avoid sounding like they are performing manual labor. Instead of "I carved this mask", a noble says, "This mask was manifested by my lineage".Sentence Structure
Sentences often begin with a "Status Particle" that identifies the speaker's rank relative to the listener. To omit this is a grave insult, often leading to a "righteous wrath" duel.
Adjective Order
Flexible, but typically follows the noun. However, putting the adjective before the noun indicates Inherent Quality, such as: Sol Aurum (The golden sun - a description)
or Aurum Sol (The Divine Sun-of-Gold - a title).
Structural Markers
Bafigronish features a "Future Perfect" tense used almost exclusively in marriage contracts and legal vows. It describes an action that will have been completed by a certain time (perfect for their temporary marriage knots).
