The collective name for Favont, Torelund, and Hetela

Marterra was the name of the islands Favont, Hetela, and Torelund, before Leric I invaded in 104 and drove the inhabitants, the Marterrans, out. Though the country, Marterra, no longer exists, the islands are still collectively known as Marterra.

Geography

Marterra is an archipelago in North Magnus consisting of an estimated 60 islands, the three largest being Favont, Torelund, and Hetela. The islands share a collective root language, Marterran.

Torelund

Torelund is at the end of an oceanic trench known as Lucian’s Wake. In the southern region of the island is a volcano, while in the north are geyser fields. The country is often the epicentre of earthquakes and can experience tsunamis on its southern shores.

Hetela

A mountain range runs the length of Hetela. In the west, these are active volcanoes, but in the east, they are extinct. (More info to come soon when I work this out)

Favont

Both West and East Favont are very mountainous, while the centre of the country is very low and almost flat in places. This area is sometimes referred to as the Marterran Bowl.

Climate

Marterra has a temperate marine climate. It is typically wet throughout summer, and it drops below freezing in winter. Though there are hot days, they rarely last longer than two or three days in a row.

Lucian’s Wake brings a warmer climate from southern Magnus to these islands. Without the current, there would be icebergs around the islands. But this current also makes travelling by boat to these countries dangerous.

History

In 104, Marterra was one country, ruled by the Marterrans, who, unlike Ananans or Magi, had control of all the elements. The Scriptures state that Marterrans were the evil angels that had crawled out of the pit at the tip of Lucian’s Wake and infected the land. In 104, Leric invaded the largest island of Marterra, which he named Favont, and drove the Marterrans away. However, due to constant fighting and difficult currents, he was never able to conquer Hetela and Torelund.

In 210, Oswyn II became the first king of Favont, Torelund and Hetela. He made a point about never collectively referring to them as ‘Marterra’. While Torelund and Hetela are kingdoms in their own right today, geographically, the region has kept its original name.
