Vespians
Vespains are a species of tiny winged insect-like people native Exorsia. They are a relatively recent discovery, first recorded during the late Age of Arcanum, making them potentially the youngest Mortal species in Exorsia.
Vespians are a single sex species and have been known to wield a variety of FaerirMagic, similar to Fairies. While Vespians resemble Fairies in many ways, they are far less magical in nature and appearance. Also, unlike Fairies, Vespians are Mortals, but the two species are believed to be related.
Vespians have barbed spurs that protrude out the back of their feet, these spurs can be used to inflict a poisonous sting that can even debilitate large creatures. They also have a very short lifespan, rarely exceeding 10 years of age. This results in Vespians always being active, with no concept of relaxing or taking their time. They are commonly ambitious, wanting to make their mark on the world before they die.
Vespians are exclusively found living in the vast woodlands of Elderna in Elderan. They are a very reclusive people, hidden deep within the forest, in small villages built high in the treetops. On rare occasions a Vespian will leave their village to travel out into the world in search of adventure, often finding the noise and bustle overwhelming at first, a far cry from their forest homes. Most of our information on the Vespian species come from such travellers.
Fae Origins
Vespians are believed to be descended from the Fairies of the Land of Faerie, or at least related to them.
The predominant theory is that Vespians are descended from a group of Fairies that somehow survived an extended period outside of the Land of Faerie, becoming disconnected from the Realm of the Fae, which in turn caused them to evolve into the Vespians.
Mistrust of "Tall Folk"
Not much is known about Vespians, as they are extremely wary of “tall folk”, and sometimes outright hostile towards them.
This hatred of other humanoids stems from a legend, passed down through generations. The legend tells that “tall folk'' had once tried to wipe out the Vespians, destroying their homes and sending them into hiding. Some have speculated that this legend may refer to the industrial expansion of the city of Kith’urûr into Elderna during the Age of Arcanum.
Dual Names
Vespians often have two names, the first is reserved for family and romantic partners, while the second reserved for friends and the public.
It is seen as a great honour to grant first name privileges to someone, as it is a gesture of invitation into one's family, which can be romantic, but isn't exclusively so. But to call a Vespian by their wrong name is and incredibly scandalous and inappropriate act, and a Vespian will often take great offence to it.
Appearance
Vespians somewhat resemble Fairies, but they are often far less magical and vibrant in appearance. Vespians are tiny in size, with pointed ears and sharp features. Beautiful dragonfly-like wings protrude from their backs and barred spurs that protrude from the back of their feet.
Like many other species of Faeria-Flora ancestry, Vespians have an androgenous appearance and do not grow body hair and can not grow facial hair.
Complexion: Vespian skin tones range from a light pale complexion to a dark brown one, or even a greenish colour.
Hair: Vespian hair colour ranges from black, brown, blonde or ginger, commonly turning grey or white with age.
Eyes: Vespians tend to have jet black insectoid eyes.
Maturity
Vespians mature much faster than Humans, reaching adulthood in only a year.
Reproduction
Vespians hatch from eggs. Any two Vespians can produce a cluster of between 2-3 eggs which are then wrapped in a beautiful cocoon. The eggs hatch in approximately 2 months.
