Merfolk
Merfolk are a species of aquatic humanoids that live within vast settlements beneath the waves of Exorsia's Seas and Oceans, as well as within the Elemental Plane of Water. While Merfolk are amphibious and can breathe air, they rarely surface as they have a fin-like tail instead of legs and are unable to walk on land.
Merfolk are one of the most populous sentient species on Exorsia, and can be found all across the globe, living in highly developed underwater civilisations below the surface of Exorsia's seas and oceans, excluding The Frigid Sea and The Glacial Depths of the north. Merfolk make up the majority of the population of these underwater towns and cities, alongside a much smaller population of Sea Elves and aquatic Beastfolk.
Merfolk settlements, like all Mortal species, are exceptionally varied, with different leaders and politics to each other. Some are peaceful, happily living alongside other underwater species, and are willing to trade supplies and knowledge with the surface, while others are far more violent, waging vast wars along the sea bed and attacking ships sailing over their waters. Despite their differences, a majority of these settlements primarily worship the God of the Sea, Poseidon, the Divine Patron of the Merfolk.
Within the Elemental Plane of Water, most of the Merfolk that reside there are under the jurisdiction of Poseidon himself, who rules the Plane from his vast underwater palace located there. These Merfolk often serve the God of the Sea personally, many of them serving as part of the Gods personal army. Though they are rarely if ever deployed in Exorsia.
While there are many people on the surface of Exorsia interested in learning more about Merfolk culture, and the culture of their underwater communities, Merfolk seem to have little interest in the surface and often dismiss the requests and troubles of the surface dwellers. This is believed to stem from a culture of pride among some Merfolk, who believe underwater people are superior to surface dwelling peoples.
Despite a common misconception, Merfolk are not fish, and are rather Mammals, similar in biology to that of Dolphins and Whales. But unlike other Mammals, Merfolk are amphibious and don't need to surface for air.
Appearance
Merfolk are often said to resemble a mix between a humanoid and a dolphin, with a humanoid-like upper body and a fin-like tail instead of legs. Merfolk have a wide array of appearances, with it said that no two Merfolk look alike.
Merfolk are hairless, lacking any hair on their head or body, instead they are covered in numerous, colourful, fin-like protrusions upon their heads, resembling hair and ears, as well as at the tips of their elbows. Merfolk skin is smooth and shiny, from the top of their heads to their tails. It is also often patterned with splotches and markings of different colours. Merfolk also have sharp teeth, prominent gills at sides of their torso, and webbed fingers.
Merfolk are usually sparsely clothed, usually only tight fitting leathers or other water resistant materials, allowing them to swim through the water without resistance. Merfolk in towns and cites tend to wear more clothing than those outside of large settlements, and a lot more free flowing materials. Merfolk are also know to wear jewellery as well as decorated shells and underwater plants. Merfolk soldiers also wear light, specially made armour of leather and metals.
Complexion: Merfolk skin tones range from tones of blue, green or pink.
Eyes: Merfolk tend to have blue, green or black coloured eyes.

Merfolk mature at the same rate as Humans, reaching adulthood around the age of 20.
