Section 8 Ranks & Clearance Levels

"Knowledge is dangerous. Access is lethal." — Internal Section 8 motto

Section 8 operates on a dual system: Operational Rank (your position in the chain of command) and Clearance Level (what classified information and resources you are legally allowed to access). Most agents never advance far in both.

Important Rule: If you are caught accessing material above your clearance level without authorization, you will be erased — not just fired, but memory-purged and disappeared.

Operational Ranks

Section 8 uses a flat, deniable structure. There are no fancy military titles — everything is designed to sound boring on paper.

Special Designations

  • "Burned" Asset: An agent who has been officially disavowed. Still useful, but completely deniable.
  • "Redacted": The agent no longer officially exists. Usually reserved for deep-cover or extremely dangerous missions.
  • "Echo": An agent who has survived direct exposure to a Void-level threat and been allowed to live. Highly respected. Highly unstable.
  • "Zero": A designation for agents who have been memory-purged multiple times. Used when even Black-level knowledge becomes too dangerous.

Promotion & Advancement

Advancement in Section 8 is rarely about merit. It is about survival and usefulness.

  • Surviving an encounter with a Moon-Beast, Star Vampire, or Craniovore hive usually earns an automatic bump to Red clearance.
  • Bringing back usable xenotech or preventing a public incident can fast-track you to Black.
  • Questioning orders too loudly, or failing to contain a breach, usually results in demotion… or erasure.

Most agents die, go insane, or “retire” (disappear) long before reaching Controller rank.

Player Character Starting Clearance

New Section 8 characters typically begin with:

  • Gray Clearance (Level 1)
  • Operative Rank

During character creation or advancement, you may take the Section 8 Clearance feat (or higher versions) to gain better access and resources.

GM Note for Players: Your character may have secrets even you don’t fully know. Section 8 frequently implants false memories or uses memory wipes. That “routine medical check” you had last month? It might have been something else entirely.
