Essillion (eh-sil-yun)

City of Tradition
large Human city

Essillion is the Capital of Tradition, and currently the only Human Capital left on Starhelm, with Avandar's most recent departure to Dovak.

It is set in a small chain of mountains that surround it on the north and west side, with a trio of mines backing up against the westernmost promontory of rock known as the Mount. It is an important settlement along the way to or from Hollow's Point and is the central architect of the Road of Opportunity , though most of the continuing upkeep is handled by Hollow's Point now.

Most Essillionites are happy and secure in their mountain home. They enjoy the riches of the mines that make up the entire western side of their city. Gold, silver, iron, copper, and most notably Kingsmetal (electrum), which is not found in most other places on Starhelm, can be found in abundance in their mines.

A major shift in leadership occurred in the middle of the year 1005 PF after a massive Goblin occupation, and subsequent retaking of the city by Ryan Starshield. Ryan's father stepped down as king and Ryan assumed the mantle. The majority of the Council of Essillion was replaced and many of the positions of leadership in different aspects of the city have fallen to younger citizens with new ideas on how to run the city.

Demographics

Humans are the predominant Lineage in Essillion but it still hosts a wide spectrum of residents and travelers. Very few Goblins now exist there after the occupation from Basselwip, and no Fallen, but most other Lineages have a welcome home here. Dwarves and Halflings particularly find a warm place in Essillion.

Government

Essillion is ruled by a monarchy, currently under the Starshield family, and was most recently ruled by King Arndrin Starshield, an Exemplar of Curceon. That title now rests with his son Ryan, the liberator of Essillion. Arndrin and his wife Jalisha have retired to their modest Starshield estate on the Second Tier of the Mount. Along with his sisters Sheera and Petal, Ryan has assumed leadership readily and smoothly. Sheera is his liaison to the Council of Essillion, a role previously held by Byras Highstance, a very well-respected noble and counterpoint to Kind Arndrin. Petal has assumed a role of ambassador to the outlying lands and travels extensively to form lasting relationships with those in the immediate area.

The family is greatly admired and respected and they have the blessings of Curceon, Pristell, and now Eriken. Historically, the rule has gone to the Starshields, and to date that line has not been broken. However, the rule of Essillion is not necessarily the Starshields. If the line is broken or other arrangements are made, the other two Dukes could potentially take over as the ruling monarch.

A council of advisors sit below the monarch and are essential to the smooth ruling of the city. The council members are elected and serve until a new monarch is coronated, or until they choose to step down or are removed by a unanimous decision by the other members. The head of the council is voted in by the other members and must achieve an overwhelming majority of votes to pass. This is also held as above, but may be voted out by a unanimous decision from the other council members. Every ten years a confirmation vote is held to ensure the satisfaction of the council with the leader, and only requires a minimum of 3 votes to pass. The leader of the council only gets a tie-breaking vote, but otherwise just ensures that the council is performing efficiently, effectively, and within the boundaries of tradition.

The council exists as an extension of the monarch's will and must abide by the monarch's decisions. They have influence over their represented areas but all major decisions must be approved by the monarch. Each ruler of Essillion has different requirements and utilizes the council in different ways. In the previous iteration, King Arndrin allowed the day to day operations of the city to be handled by the council, while the king ensured the military and the reputation of Essillion was kept intact. The ruling monarch is also ultimately in charge of foreign relations though they typically have a number of ministers that they employ.

In the current iteration, though it is still early in Ryan's career, King Ryan is very popular, much like his father was. Goodwill follows him through the city thanks to his role in liberating the city from the Goblins. One of Ryan's greatest assets is an ability to draw good people to his side, and he is wise enough to listen to their counsel. He has grown considerably since his time as the Roving Prince, when he abandoned his duty to the city to explore and embrace the outside world. This has given Ryan a lot of perspective of the outside world and it holds him in good stead. He is more involved in the learning of the city's requirements than his father was, but he ensures to leave the work in the hands of those who know how to do it. He trusts people that have proven themselves loyal, sincere, and capable.

When a new leader is coronated the first act they perform is to choose the state religion. While technically any Shard of Alucar can become the state religion (except for Greegis), it is typically only amongst the churches of Curceon and Pristell. To date 50% of the time the church of Curceon is the state religion, while about 40% it is Pristell. The remaining times are diminishing from Vocerix, Mirriam, Josefan, and Gnurich. For the first time since its founding, Essillion has chosen Eriken as the official state religion. Eriken has grown in power exponentially in the last few years and particularly after his escape from the Witch Queen's capture, having secured the Pristell shard from her. This act greatly weakened the Witch Queen's hold of her most powerful allies, and boosted Eriken's power with the shards of Curceon and Pristell now in his possession. Eriken has risen to become a true god now, and is no longer considered a godling. He has taken up residence in the Palace of Kings and resides now in his parent's old room, called The Divine Suite.

After the state religion is chosen a new council is then chosen.

Essillion’s Council consists of representatives from six areas of interest to the city. What started as an informal gathering between the three noble families and Elgor, the first Ironbran, slowly began to incorporate the suggestions and recommendations of other families or interested parties. Elgor gathered information on the city and presented to the Dukes, and became so useful to them that they granted him a lordship. He brought together other members to help him present to the Dukes as it became too unwieldy and the Council of Essillion was born. Continuing this to current practice, no member of a major noble family may sit on the Council as they are the ones to receive the information, not gather it.

The six areas of council responsibility are as follows: Information Gathering, Military, Religion, Mercantile, Infrastructure, and finally Culture.

In times past the three static positions (Information, Religion, and Mercantile) each nominate a person to fill each of the remaining roles (Military, Infrastructure, Culture). The monarch then chooses amongst those to fill the vacant positions. Oftentimes, the members of the old council are elected again if they did a good job.

Historically, the Ironbrans have always sat on the Council with the responsibility of Information Gathering, the head of the Church of Essillion has always sat on the Council with the responsibility of Religion, and the Silverfist family has always sat on the Council with the responsibility of Mercantile. In the previous Council a change took place, as the Silverfist family had become defunct. The mercantile guild known as The Mill, owners of the Dragon Hoard Complex, had officially been added to the Council to replace the Silverfist family.

The current representatives of Essillion’s council are as follows:

  • Information Gathering: Travis Forebear
  • Military: Olivia Beaumont
  • Religion: Montaigne Skyshard
  • Mercantile: Fiona Winterkiss
  • Infrastructure: Blasset Skydigger
  • Culture: Lydia Brookhaven

The major noble families of Essillion number only three; Starshield, Stormarm, and Skyshard. Lesser nobles exist and run the majority of the older businesses in the city, as well as owning much land, however, a recent influx of wealthy merchants has grown in Essillion and they also have great prominence and power. Even with that, the official and traditional nature of the major noble families keeps those three in great prominence.

With the end of the Goblin occupation, a change in power structure has occurred. The three families have historically all held relatively equal power and respect in the city. Montaigne has now been elevated to the head of the Skyshard family, as well as the head of the state religion and councillor of Religion. The Skyshards have seen a dramatic rise in power and popularity, especially with Montaigne as the prime hero of the resistance within the city.

The Stormarms, however, have suffered a dramatic decline in power. Archibald has stepped down as head of the family due to his failing health and mistreatment at the hands of the Goblins. No immediate replacement has been able to take the reins as Archibald has no living children to inherit. Family members of opposing sides have left the leadership of the family in a hotly contested battle with no clear winner at the current time. This infighting coupled with the popularity of the Starshields and the Skyshards have relegated the Stonearms to a clear third level position within the hierarchy of the Dukes of Essillion. Tradition alone keeps them still relevant.

The structure of government and social status in Essillion is as follows, and has not changed with Ryan's ascendency to King.

  • King/Queen of Essillion is the highest tier
  • The three Dukes (Starshield, Skyshard, and Stormarm) make up the tier of the major noble class
  • The Marquis is the highest tier of the minor noble class
  • The Counts are the second highest tier of the minor noble class
  • The Barons are the lowest tier of the minor noble class.

Pre-Fractioning, the mines of Essillion, the city’s lifeblood, was officially and historically owned by the three major noble families. The Dwarves gifted the three major mines to Starhelm City, who in turn, sent the three Dukes of Starshield, Stormarm, and Skyshard families to run the town. They, in turn divided them up amongst themselves. While these mines are physically connected by tunnels and shafts, the Stormarms took the northern mine, the Skyshards took the southern mine, while the Starshields took the central mine. The central mine was the smallest and least varied so the three agreed to give the rulership of the surrounding city to the Starshield family. They also agreed that the rulership of the city and the mines would only go to one of the three families. In the unlikely event that the Starshield line fails, the ruling of the city would go to either the Stormarm or Skyshard family, though they would have to give up claim to their mine. In that case, one family would rule the north and south mines while the other would claim royalty and take the middle mine.

Post-Fractioning, however, the Starshield family took on the role of King of Essillion, giving up their rights and claims to the central mine, but retaining their ownership of the surrounding lands. The central mine's profits and resources go directly to the city's coffers, and none of the Dukes own it. However, in the event of the Starshield line failing, the Duke who took over leadership would retain ownership of their mine and the central mine would belong to the Duke who did not take the royal appointment.

Defences

Essillion is well protected by two large fortified walls on the east and south side of the city. A large gatehouse and front gate protect it from incursion, and three portcullises can be lowered at 10' intervals when going through the main gate, though they are rarely used. Military service is encouraged and embraced by the majority of the population. While most city guards follow the preachings of Curceon, some have been known to follow Bruges as well. The militia and soldiers traditionally have more followers of Bruges in their ranks but they still do not make up the majority. Barracks, and militia house are situated to the north, south, and east walls. A large shrine to Bruges can be found in the southern militia house and was run by Battlefather Korax Deathgrip prior to the Goblin invasion. He was killed by a large Bugbear named Marbugg Splittooth and a statue now stands in Korax' honour at the southern militia house.

Olivia Beaumont is now in control of the militia and ensures that they will be ready for combat at a moment’s notice.

The king is the official head of the army and all the units under it, but he leaves the actual work to his very qualified commanders and leaders. One such leader is a Goliath by the name of Harmordrim Stonecutter and he has made a name for himself at an early age. He leads the King’s First Battalion and has over 1000 men at his call. There are some old timers that balk at following such a young leader but Harmordrim has proven himself worthy many times in battle. It is an uphill battle for him but one he seems willing and capable of winning. Recent events of the retaking of Essillion have quelled most doubts about the ability of Harmordrim.

Master Bowman Tymar Thinline, a veteran archer who spent much time in Aspenshield in his youth, leads a regiment of over 500 archers. This grizzled commander spends as much time firing his bow as he does leading his men, and he never tires of imparting his ‘elven wisdom’ on his troops. He is respected but not well-liked. He most recently formed a squad of resistance fighters against the Goblin invasion and successfully kept them alive and effective throughout the occupation. He is regarded as one of the heroes of the resistance against the Goblins.

The cavalry of Essillion is impressive, owing to the generous donation from the government of Hollow’s Point to the army of Essillion. They have gifted the city 200 Moon Horses of the Northguard Plains, and the Elves of Aspenshield have sent trainers to teach the riders of Essillion how to best utilize these horses. This is a recent addition to the resources of Essillion’s army and is being led by Cavalier Thomas Stoutheart, a master horseman in his own right, and heir to the Stoutheart estate. With the death of his father, Thomas has taken over the Stoutheart estate and is head of the family. He continues to ride with the cavalry as they work to quell any remaining dangers that may face Essillion past its borders. Thomas spends a lot of time north and east of the city, ensuring the lands there are kept safe.

Erik’s Chosen, a specialized unit of elite palace guards that favours the poleaxe and halberd, are used for very specific and rare occasions. They are the ultimate guard and will be utilized to protect important assets of the Essillion Army. They undergo rigorous training, including taking a vow of silence for a year, standing vigil for 3 days without food or water, and exposure to various environments. They are the honour of Erik and his shrine. They most recently were held under siege in the Shrine to Eriken during the Goblin occupation before being liberated during the Goblin culling. Little did they know their devotion to duty and their ability to withstand hunger and thirst would come so important to them.

Industry & Trade

Essillion enjoys a booming trade and industry with a variety of commodities, and products to sell. Along Essillion Trail there are a row of successful traders, stalls, and merchants that line up each morning to sell their wares. It is frequently busy, and many different products can be obtained.

In addition to the stalls in Tradefair, the Dragon's Hoard Merchant Complex is a vast store of unique and useful merchants that sell anything from meats, weapons, utensils, all the way to one-of-a-kind nicknacks and oddities. It is a bustling market where one can find almost anything they need. It is owned by Fiona Winterkiss, the head of the Mercantile Council.

Mining is also an extremely important function within the city. The lifeblood of the city starts and ends with its three impressive mines at the western edge of the city. Crafting, mining, and shipping ore, materials, and crafted products is a very busy and lucrative business for the people of Essillion.

The Anvil, a shrine to Denethen is located near the entrance to the southern mine and is headed up by Siloren Oreshine, a Dwarf of great skill with the pick and shovel. During the invasion, Siloren was captured and forced to help the Goblins but was one of the first to be liberated just before the retaking of Essillion. He has since worked hard to get the miners back to work feeling safe and secured. He has spent the first six months after the retaking of the city to get the shrine and mines back up to proper standard. He takes great pride in his work both as a miner and as the head of the shrine to Denethen.

The Arches, a shrine to Kleio is located near the entrance to the north mine, and prior to the invasion it was headed up by Blasset Skydigger, a noble Human of Essillion. In the times before his capture Blasset was an arrogant man who extolled the virtues of Kleio, particularly in his role as architect. Since the invasion he has been humbled and now recognizes the value of others and the benefits of coming together. He is still very focussed on his tasks and does not make friends easily but he has improved greatly during his short time on the Council of Essillion. Since becoming the Infrastructure councillor, Blasset has had to step down as the head of the Arches shrine. His replacement is a Goliath named Tak Stonehands, who trained under Blasset for many years. During their time in captivity Tak was instrumental in keeping the miners and construction workers there safe. He is well-liked and will prove to be a great leader of the shrine in years to come, but now he is still learning the intricacies of leadership.

Farmers live in the outlying lands beyond the walls of Essillion, and Mirriam has great presence out there, as well as the gardens and growing places of the city. Farms extend far out east toward the valley the Halflings call home and they are protected and visited often. King Arndrin made it a priority to show himself to the major villages and farms in the valley so as to remind them of their importance to all the Humans of the area. King Ryan does so as well but his familiarity with those people in the Vale was far more telling during his times as the Roving Prince. The outlying areas and even those extending further south toward Meadowspring have great fondness for King Ryan. Halflings and Dwarves greet Humans warmly typically in these areas close to Essillion, and now even further south.

Princess Petal has been tasked with enticing outlying villages and towns to join Essillion in the great expansion. As more and more settlements seek protection, Essillion borders continue to grow. What was once a city state is now a burgeoning country and the only major Human capital on Starhelm. Petal, along with her Ulken bodyguards, and a host of soldiers, including Thomas Stoutheart, travel the lands to find allies, continue Ryan's good work, and solidify the borders of Essillion.

Infrastructure

Taming the Dragonspine down the Mount steps took some ingenuity and time, but the early settlers of Essillion continued to build and develop the system of control. The Dragonspine flows from under the Palace and down through the city and out into the Vale of Lutien, eventually heading to the Avonshire River. Below the river, at the bottom of the Mount are tunnels that lead from the mines, enabling easier shipping of the ore and materials to the rest of the city and then on caravans or wagons beyond.

While not built in Essillion, the Hollow Fountain Clocktower is a great example of how Essillion structures its people. A gift from Hollow's Point, the people of Essillion rely on their clocktower to ensure they are prompt, keep to appointments, and maintain a steady and predictable structure to their day. It is also a central point in the city and is used to meet with people, enjoy the scenery, have picnics, and is a great tourist attraction. Sadly, during the invasion it is where Josephine Skyshard was kept and her captivity was not pleasant at all. The cramped spaces, hot temperatures, and lack of air flow took a toll on her health, forcing her to step down from her titular role as the head of the Skyshard family. A commemorative garden surrounds the tower, reminding all of the beauty and sadness of the clocktower.

The bridges of Essillion are an important aspect of navigating the city and each bridge is afforded a high level of respect. Below are the main bridges in Essillion.

  • Horizon Bridge is the first bridge heading west, which allows north/south passage across the Dragonspine river.
  • Wyrmclaw Bridge is the second, and larger of the two main bridges. It is right at the base of the Mount and goes east/west as well as north/south. It crosses the main part of the Dragonspine going north/south, and also a small river that flows southeast under the Hollow Fountain and into Goldenleaf Park.
  • Riverford Bridge allows northwest travel into the central northern neighbourhoods of Essillion as it allows travel over the diverted section of the Dragonspine.
  • Heartlight Pass comes off of Riverstone Road and bridges the Dragonspine at its most northeastern part of the city, before it heads. under the wall and into the Vale of Lutien. This bridge leads to the temples of Tereale, and Josefan, as well as the Healing House, and Mother Light's Nursery.
  • Fountain Bridge heads north/south, beside the Hollow Fountain Clocktower, bridging the Hoardway Pass over the branching Goldleaf River.
  • Mountpass Bridge is the first bridge on the Mount, connecting the north and south on the third tier of the Mount.
  • Squire Bridge is the second bridge on the Mount, connecting the north and south on the second tier of the Mount. It is also where the shrine to Eriken, the Phirstling Shrine sits.

The streets and thoroughfares of Essillion are well-maintained and easy to travel. Below are the main thoroughfares

  • Essillion Trail is the main road from the front of the Mount to the Front gates and beyond, continuing for many miles east into the Vale of Lutien.
  • Deathgate Road heads south from the front gates towards the cemetery.
  • Riverstone Road heads north from the front gates ending at the Heartlight Pass Bridge.
  • Riversedge Road heads northwest from the front gates, leading to Riverford Bridge and then continues northeast.
  • Wyrmclaw Way dominates most of the northwest section of Essillion and branches off into a few different directions, heading north, west, and east along the river and to the northern militia house.
  • Edgeside Pass comes off of Wyrmclaw Way at about halfway north of Wyrmclaw Bridge, and it leads directly to The Edge, a popular inn and taproom in Essillion.
  • Hoardway Pass heads south from the Hollow Fountain Clocktower towards Fountain Bridge, continuing south until it reaches the southern militia House.

Districts

Essillion is broken up into different districts including the Mount, the Dragon's Hoard Merchant Complex, and 20 distinct neighbourhoods.

The Mount

The Mount is the westernmost promontory from the mountainside of the mines. It is broken up into three levels, each level split in two, bisected by the Dragonspine River as it flows eastward through the city.

The first tier of the Mount contains the Palace of the King, as well as some well-maintained gardens. It is the sole province of the ruler of the city and no others may lay claim to it. The Dragonspine flows under the central courtyard of the palace, emerging just inside the opening of the walls to the palace. Stone steps flanked by statues of Lyonite Starshield and the current ruler of Essillion lead down to the second level of the Mount.

The second tier of the Mount contains some noble houses and the home of the major temples to the city. It is separated by Squire Bridge, where the Phirstling Shrine of Eriken is situated. The shrine occupies the centre of the bridge, with a pathway through to either side of it.

On the north side of the river is the Maiden Queen's Tower, the temple to Pristell. North of that are some of the more extensive and impressive noble houses including the ones for the Ironbrans and the Stouthearts.

South of the river is Knightheart Abbey, the temple to Curceon, as well as the Exemplar's Lodge, and the Hall of the Guardians, the two factions of Curceon's faith.

A statue of Curceon and a statue of Pristell flank the steps that lead down to the third tier of the Mount.

The third tier of the Mount contains some more noble houses, as well as the majority of the civic buildings for running the city.

On the north side are the schools, universities, libraries, and museums for the city, including the most famous of them, The Rookery. It has the Royal Museum and The Hatchery on that tier as well.

Most popular, however, is the entrance to The Edge that is on that level.

South of Mountpass Bridge is the Mountain's Peak Marriage Hall, an entertainment facility for the wealthy. South of that is the Hall of the Royal Sphynx, the seat of bureaucratic government in the city and the temple to Vocerix .

The Anvil (South Mines)

The Anvil, also known as the South Mines house most of the miners in the city, though not all. It is made up of simple homes, with some rough hewn roads. The lower mines tend to produce more gold and silver, with some Kingsmetal thrown in. The Anvil shrine to Denethen is where the area gets its name from. Most people just call it The Anvil when referring to the neighbourhood.

Southridge

The loom of the Mount to the west casts shadows across Southridge but some of the nicest homes in Essillion can be found in Southridge, particularly further north towards The Dragon's Hoard market.

Knotwood

Traveling east past the Lower Mines neighbourhood takes you into Knotwood. It is a pleasant area situated heavily around a cluster of trees in the centre. While the houses are nicer than the ones in Lower Mines, they are not fancy, rather they are simple and rustic. Further east the sturdy south militia house can be seen standing out amongst the homes of Knotwood.

Commerceclaw

The Tiger’s Den Monastery occupies the majority of this neighbourhood, though not entirely. The amber bricks of the Hoardway Pass separate the east side from neighbouring Valeview. Its proximity to The Dragon's Hoard market makes it a desirable location, though the residents are a bit more lively and rambunctious.

Valeview

Similar to Commerceclaw or Knotwood, the homes in Valeview are nice but not terribly fancy. Its proximity to Hoardway Pass makes it accessible, but its more southern location keeps it more quiet. The south militia house also keeps it very protected from any criminal elements or vagrants. Despite its name, there is no view of the Vale from this neighbourhood.

Grimshield

The buildings in Grimshield do their best to combat the assumption that this neighbourhood is dark and foreboding. Far from it. There is colour here, and growing things. The trees on the eastern edge do a nice job of separating this neighbourhood from the cemetery and Mourning Hall to the east.

Southelm

Southelm is a nice neighbourhood with well-kept homes, particularly in the northwest, near the Hoardway Pass. Trees line the borders in the east, separating the area from the more depressing Gloomy Gables and Mercy Hall.

Smallwood

Smallwood, as its name suggests is not very big, but it is very picturesque. A strong stream from the Dragonspine winds it way through Golden Leaf Park and into a large well near the southern border. Like Parkside, its neighbour to the north, Smallwood has great access to Golden Leaf Memorial Park. They are simple, nature-loving residents tending and enjoying the large well at the end of Goldleaf River.

Parkside

Parkside is a larger and nicer version of Smallwood, and has a greater access to the Golden Leaf Memorial Park. On its north side it borders the southern part of Tradefair. This area is much sought after as it is near to the bustling activity of Tradefair and the front gate, as well as a main intersection of Deathgate Road and the Essillion Trail.

Fountainview

Fountainview is a beautiful and interesting part of Essillion. It is broken up into two sections, separated by many bridges and the Clocktower. Horizon Bridge connects it to Tradefair, Wyrmclaw Bridge connects it to the Mount, and Fountain Bridge connects it to the Dragon Hoard. There is a small bridge at the southeast that connects it to Golden Leaf park as well.

Wealthy citizens own homes in Fountainview, particularly further west towards the Hollow Fountain Clocktower.

Tradefair

Tradefair is the bustling part of Essillion. There are permanent and short-term stalls that line Essillion Trail from Deathgate Road all the way up to Riverford Bridge. Many merchants and farmers rush to gather their carts and find a desirable spot along Essillion Trail and the guards are in place to make sure fights don't break out. Some stalls can be rented out for a period of time, and the choicest locations are owned by The Mill. Some caravans that make long voyages might stay in Essillion for a while and will rent out locations for long visits, while farmers and craftsmen might set up for only a day and then move on.

Riversedge

This neighbourhood has a great view of the Dragonspine river and many homes on the shore are well-maintained. The ones closer to Riverstone Road are more simple and rustic. It can get loud in this part of town, especially after a heavy rainstorm as the river flows rapidly at this point.

Topwood

Crossing over Heartlight Pass takes you into this peaceful and picturesque part of Essillion. The gleaming tower of Tereale stands like a beacon in the distance. The small woods of Goldelm Park in the northwest of the neighbourhood bridges the stream that separates Topwood from Elmwood. The simple but comfortable houses of the area are situated solely on the northwest edge where the mountain greets the city borders.

Elmwood

This small neighbourhood is surrounded on all sides by other neighbourhoods. The quiet and peaceful woods of Goldelm Park in the east and the gentle homes on the north in Topwood and the quiet and graceful homes of Lockwood to the south protect it somewhat from the loud and bustling Steelfist's Weapons and Armour to the west.

Lockhaven

The homes of Lockhaven are quite nice and the roads are well-maintained here. The sound of the rushing Dragonspine is easily heard, particularly after heavy rainstorms. It is a busy part of the town, particularly in the south section of the neighbourhood as people travel along Riversedge Road to enjoy the river or to head towards Heartlight Pass and along Riverstone Road, or down to Riverford Bridge and along Essillion Trail.

Blackmist

Similar to Lockhaven, Blackmist is made up of fancy homes. It connects to major trade routes and enjoys some busy traffic typically. The two sections of the neighbourhood are separated by Wyrmclaw Way, with the southern part being the sole province of The Mill and Fiona Winterkiss. Its most prominent resident is Steelfist's Weapons and Armour and that establishment takes up an entire block. Ash and soot often float across Steelfist's but typically get dispersed by the mountain winds and rushing water of the Dragonspine.

Bramblefoot

Bramblefoot is considered one of the nicest areas below the Mount, and its proximity to the Wyrmclaw Bridge, the Edge, and some minor noble houses makes it much sought after. It is also the home to a very popular book store called Tink's Inks. Tink is a Gnome of great renown and respect in the city and is a much sought after scrivener.

Edgeview

Edgeview is a small but well respected section of the city. It is peopled more with common, hardworking citizens who enjoy their proximity to the Edge. It normally receives a lot of traffic along Edgeside Path and contains a great mix of the various elements of the city.

Northridge

Similar to Southridge, Northridge has some noble houses and a great convenience to the Edge and to the bridges. Some of the more successful crafters may call Northridge home, though most still stick to their neighbour to the west in the Upper Mines.

The Upper Mines

The Upper Mines, also known as the North Mines house many crafters and artisans of worked metal. Some blacksmiths, carpenters, toolmakers, and the like call this area, and much of the north end of Essillion, home. The upper mines produce more iron and copper which makes it convenient for the crafters to gather materials for crafting or trade.

The Dragon's Hoard

This very large and varied marketplace is owned by The Mill, a successful business along the edge of the Dragonspine in central Essillion. Fiona Winterkiss has capitalized on her success and continues to grow and expand the offerings of the Dragon's Hoard. Many merchants from far away look to make a trip to The Dragon's Hoard and often shop amongst themselves to find good deals and rare items. It is a covered market and has a variety of merchants that sell food, trinkets, weapons, oddities, art, equipment, and anything else that can be imagined.

Assets

Essillion's most valuable assets are its three mines and they each hold a great significance to the forming and prosperity of the city. The north mine contains mostly copper and iron, used for making tools and weapons. The south mine contains mostly gold and silver, used for making art, jewelry, or most often for trading. The centre mine contains a mix of the other two but to a much lesser degree, being the smallest mine of the three. However, it does have a very large vein of Kingsmetal, what the Dwarves called electrum. It is a mix of gold and silver, with some elements of copper throughout. It is in abundance in Essillion but is rare elsewhere. It holds its value as a bridge between silver and gold but is not used much in other parts of the continent.

Guilds and Factions

Essillion is a very formal and orderly city, with many laws and rules to follow. Guards, constabulary, and militia roam the city streets, guard the walls, and patrol the outer areas. Curceon and Vocerix both have a strong presence in the city and the legal system is very traditional, formal, and judicial. While technically the king is the final arbiter of justice, he rarely proclaims any decrees or decisions when it comes to crime or punishment. His advisors, councilors, barristers, and judges see that the meting out of punishment and the incarceration of criminals is swift and fair.

This does not mean that crime does not exist in Essillion, quite the contrary actually. The criminal element in Essillion is clever, widespread, and patient. They do not draw undue attention to themselves and they take every opportunity to strike when there is distraction, both socially and literally. The Closed Book, and Day Walkers guilds all have their main branches located in Essillion. Until recently the Black Talon also had their main headquarters in Essillion but their location and identities were revealed to the guard and the city by Harmbringer Mercenary Company and they had to flee to parts unknown.

In a city filled with information and a love of knowledge, it is no surprise that the Closed Book guild maintains a steady and healthy presence. They are typically two steps ahead of the law in Essillion, as information flows freely to them, though at a steep price from them.

The Day Walkers are a loose confederation of spies and tails that can blend into any crowd, follow their quarry without being seen, and rely on subtle clues to ascertain their target’s most likely destinations. They work closely with the Closed Book and there are some that are freelancers that contribute their unique talents to both organizations. The Day Walkers’ leader is unknown at this time and the protectors of Essillion do not waste too much time trying to figure it out, outside of courtly intrigue. They are more concerned with the factions they know and can control. Sometimes the constabulary and government utilize the Day Walkers for their own needs, but never for nefarious purposes.

All worship is allowed in Essillion and many shrines can be found in shops, or along roadways, most being small or individual in nature. Greegis is the one exception. Until recently any worship of him was outlawed in Essillion and most often would get the perpetrator banned from the city. The rules have softened somewhat and the law has been updated to show that no formal worship in public spaces or in view of the outside world may take place in Essillion, but in private, in homes or hidden away in shops it is allowed. There is still not a huge contingent of Greegis worshippers but since trade with the outside is frequent, there are some travelers to the city that still find the need to say a prayer or display symbols or worship. They are notified before entering the city of the law and most are given only one warning before the offending symbols or notes of his worship are confiscated and any shrines are dismantled and taken away. After a second warning they are banned from entering the city for a period of 1 year, and a formal request to remove their ban can take place.

The citizens and government of Essillion do not take this lightly, as they value their trading partners but their historical enmity of Greegis is very strong.

The Exemplars, and Guardians of Curceon are a major faction within Essillion, though of lesser importance outside of the immediate areas nearby in the Vale. The two factions of the Curceon church had been heading towards a real schism until the invasion of the Goblin army. They put aside their differences during the attack, and with the heroic death of Baltar Steeleye and the eventual retaking of the city by Ryan Starshield and his gathered army, made up of many Exemplars, they came to remember the strength of their two sides of their faith. Efforts are being made on both sides to repair any rifts that were forming, and the decimation of most of the Guardians have left a big hole in the protection of Essillion. The official stance of the Church of Curceon is that the Guardians and Exemplars have been replaced with a single and unified Order of the Brothers called the Exemplary Guard. Each member is expected to perform their duties however the need requires, whether it is guarding, roving, or assisting those in need at home or abroad.

The old Exemplar's Lodge has been repurposed as the Heroes' Journey, the church of Eriken. Eriken himself trains the new order of Exemplary Guards, starting with Justin Whitearm.

The Hall of Guardians has also been repurposed as the training grounds for the Exemplary Guard, and is led by Justin Whitearm, after the death of Baltar Steeleye.

Knightheart Abbey remains as the church of Curceon and is being led by Byras Highstance, who is no longer the head of the official city religion nor the head of the Council of Essillion.

History

Long before the Fractioning, in 300 AE when Starhelm City was still the centre of the continent, Essillion was began. Dwarves of Forgehome gifted 3 mines to Starhelm City as an act of friendship and appreciation. To the Dwarves the mines were remote and had nothing terribly special to set it apart. It was productive in a moderate sense in gold, silver, copper, and iron. What it was abundant in however, was electrum, a metal that the Dwarves did not value overly much. It was a mixing of silver, gold, and copper but just diluted the veins of the more productive three so the Dwarves had no real use for them.

Starhelm City was glad to have more presence in the Vale and was happy to accept their generous gift. As such Starhelm city sent 3 Dukes to run the town of Essillion - the Starshields, the Skyshards, and the Stormarms.

When the Dukes got to Essillion, they were impressed by the geography but not necessarily the beauty. 3 large promontories from the western mountain stepped down to the ground level, with a powerful and flowing river through the centre. They were unsure how they would proceed but they knew they had to make something out of it. Their reputation was on the line.

They noted 2 large mines on the north and south of the mount, with one smaller mine in the centre. From the description of the Dwarves, the centre mine was the one that contained most of the electrum, a relatively useless ore to the Dwarves. After much debate it was agreed that the Skyshards would take the south mine and the Stormarms would take the north mine and the Starshields could take the centre mine and the land rights around the town, not that there was much to it. The three Dukes ruled the city together as the major noble houses, and their families would retain that status permanently.

The years that passed saw Essillion grow from a small mining town to a small city over hundreds of years. They first tamed the Dragonspine River and built numerous bridges to enable access throughout the city. It was well protected by the mountains on two sides, and a strong wall was erected on the east and south parts of the city to further guard it from danger. The lands around it to the south and east were fertile and prosperous and the Dukes had great success in cultivating both the mines and the lands to increase their value.

Trade and crafting became an important part of Essillion life and they kept the history of Starhelm City alive in their teachings and culture. Alucar was an important figure for all three Dukes and the worship of him was very widespread, incorporating various aspects of his influence.

For all of its growth and success, Essillion was still a small city in comparison to the more impressive settlements of its origins and its immediate neighbours. Its people were happy and fruitful but did not seek to expand or bring war or hardship. They made friends easily with the Dwarves and Halflings of the area, and the Gnomes of Hollow's Point, though the Elves of Aspenshield were not unfriendly but not close.

The time of the Fractioning was extremely difficult for the continent, but the people of the Vale fared much better than most, and Essillion was no exception. While the destruction of their god was catastrophic, their infrastructure and physical assets remained relatively unscathed. Nothing was destroyed to the point of being unable to be rebuilt. The Dwarves of Shalehaven fared well, as did the Halflings of Lutien's Vale, but the Dwarves of Forgehome were devastated by the blast of the Fractioning, particularly their western door to the centre of the continent. For a time the people of Essillion assumed they were the only Human settlement left on the continent.

Two days after the Fractioning, the Shard of Alucar known as Curceon showed up in Essillion, instilling a sense of calm and perseverance to the wavering citizens. The current Starshield Duke, Lyonite Starshield was a popular leader amongst the people and was doing his best to bring order and structure. The presence of Curceon helped him greatly. He was not a jealous man and was grateful for the sudden appearance of this man who claimed to be an aspect of their god Alucar. Great doubt was in many people's minds but Lyonite was steadfast in his acceptance. He was desperate to help his people, so even if this man was not telling the truth, he would still be useful to keep his city moving forward.

Curceon proved himself over the next few months, as did Lyonite. There were many who flocked to Lyonite in spite of the presence of an obvious divine power. Others stood behind Curceon in the hopes he would bring back the best elements of Alucar. Some did neither and cared for only their own survival.

Four months after the Fractioning, a man of small stature came to Essillion with offers of help and aid. At first Greegis was very useful and was good at convincing people to come together. He struck up a friendship with Lyonite and supported his efforts at leading his people. When Lyonite had doubts, Greegis encouraged him, if Lyonite had ideas, Greegis supported him. For over a month Greegis worked his way into the council of Lyonite. On more than one occasion he suggested to Lyonite that he should declare himself King of Essillion. He basically was already in all manner save official title. Lyonite struggled with his emotions and thoughts on this, constantly wavering back and forth.

That all changed when a striking and dignified woman appeared one month later and revealed herself as Pristell, a Shard of Alucar. Her presence, while different, was no less powerful than Curceon's. She quickly established herself in the courts of the Dukes, and was continually an adversary of Greegis' counsel. Recommending dignity and morals to hold true to oneself was a measure of a strong leader and person. She was swaying Lyonite to stand true to his ideals and Greegis was getting particularly annoyed at this intruding woman. As Lyonite began to move from Greegis' counsel and over to Pristell's something in Greegis' demeanour broke. He revealed himself as another Shard of Alucar, and the only one that truly mattered. He brought the spark of ambition and Pristell was weakening a great man and city with her foolish arguments. His formed changed to a weasley man with extended fingernails, almost claws, and he lashed out at Pristell in anger. Quick to act and quicker than Greegis, Curceon jumped to her aid and defended her from the unwarranted attack. Curceon booms out in a loud voice that Greegis must leave the city, never to return. His dictate went beyond mere politics and the power of his command was felt throughout the city. Greegis fled from the city and went back to Hollow's Point where he first appeared.

Pristell is both grateful and annoyed that Curceon thought she was unable to defend herself in her own manner, and she reprimanded him for his arrogance. What started out as genuine annoyance, turned to playful banter over the following months and years, ultimately culminating in friendship and then love. The two of them became the most important figures in Essillion culture and tradition.

From that point on the Skyshards and Stormarms agreed that the Starshields would become the royal family, in exchange for giving up their claim of the central mine to the city, with all profits of that mine going directly to the city coffers. The Starshields agreed and declared that if they are ever not the ruling family, due to a break in lineage or agreement, the Skyshards or the Stormarms will retain their ownership of their mines, as well as the benefits of royalty.

Lyonite Starshield became the first King of Essillion, giving up his family's rights to the mine, but retaining the ownership of the lands around the city. He was a wise and effective ruler, ensuring the people and out of the city walls were protected. He was jointly impressed with both Curceon and Pristell and his relationship with them both solidified those two as the most prominent religion in the city. Each ruler chooses the state religion and for most of the Shards chosen it is between Curceon and Pristell. Lyonite never chose one over the other but subsequent rulers typically picked one.

Thinking they were the only Human city to survive they fought even harder to preserve their tradition and history. Education became a mainstay of Essillion teachings and the library of Essillion, named the Owl’s Rookery was a place of reverence and knowledge. The University of Essillion had been around for centuries but it garnered even more prestige and power after the Fractioning. A smaller university has since opened called the Hatchery (where they hatch new ideas) and a few important museums are also popular with the young and the old, the noble or the peasant. All are invited to visit the museums but there is a separate museum reserved for the nobles.

Currently the rule of Arndrin Starshield is one of the most revered in Essillion's history. His storybook marriage to his queen Jalisha Starshield (nee Skyshard) is rare and welcomed. Many marriages are the result of political maneuvering or just traditional deals and agreements. The Starshields have a genuine love for each other, the city, and its citizens. Jalisha even disregarded the naming convention for a major noble to retain their last name. Jalisha took the name of Starshield instead of keeping her name of Skyshard. Arndrin is extremely well-liked by the citizens, their allies, and the military. He is a staunch Exemplar and continues to go out on excursions, though typically the less dangerous ones. They are mostly for face time with the populace.

Most recently, the invasion of Essillion by Basselwip the Ogre Warmaster devastated much of Essillion's peace and calm. The occupation was over six months long and many strong people died, with others being displaced. Prior to the invasion, the Roving Prince Ryan Starshield was shirking his duties as the head of the shrine of Eriken and went off to explore the Vale. He has since returned with an army to retake Essillion.

Points of interest

The Mount

Alucar’s Mount, or simply The Mount dominates the western wall and has three distinct levels, or tiers. The royal palace is the sole structure on the First Tier but other buildings make up the second and third tier before the main level of the city is reached.

First Tier

Palace of Kings - The royal palace of the ruler of Essillion and their family stands out to all in the city. It can be seen by anywhere in the city and is a beacon of hope during times of stress or hardship. It holds the royal family, but also has some extended family living there. Servants, courtiers, and the royal guard also take residence in the palace, though most of them were slain during the Goblin invasion. A new group of royal guards is currently being trained by Eriken himself to replace those who gave up their life in the name of their duty. An extensive crypt of past royals lies beneath the palace, as well as the royal treasury. While much of the royal treasury was ransacked, not all of it was so Essillion still has some wealth. However, the influx of allies, traders, merchants, and citizens have started to replenish what was lost during the invasion.

The Divine Suite, which has not seen any use since the time of Curceon and Pristell is now the residence of Eriken, the god of Improvement and Heroes. He spends much time in the palace or on the Mount training and overseeing the protection of the city. Eriken does not interact closely with the citizens of the city, preferring them to seek improvement and development on their own, without looking to him to solve problems for them. When he does spend time in the city he is gracious, amiable, and well-loved however.

Second Tier

The Halls of Curceon on the south side of the second tier houses the famous order of Paladins under Curceon. The Exemplars’ Lodge, and the Hall of the Guardians take up most of the southern edge of the tier, while Knightheart Abbey, the temple to Curceon is located nearer the middle, beside the Squire Bridge and the shrine to Eriken, located in the centre of that bridge. Two Guardian posts flank the steps to the palace on either side of the river and they are never left unoccupied. The temple to Curceon is led by the city’s second in command, Byras Highstance.

On the north side of the second tier is the realm of Pristell and her noble houses. The Starshield, Stormarm, and Skyshard estates are the largest structures, but a few other lesser noble houses also call this area home. Just as Curceon’s temple, Maiden Queen’s Tower, the temple to Pristell is nearer the middle, beside the Squire Bridge and the temple to Eriken. It is led by First Lady Lena Stormshadow, as decreed by Queen Jalisha. Lena was a childhood friend to Jalisha and some claim nepotism in the selection, though the royal household denies that claim.

Symbolically, and physically, the Squire Bridge both bridges and separates the regions of Curceon (on the south) and Pristell (on the north). The temple to the son of Curceon and Pristell lies in the middle of the bridge and one must cross through it to reach the other side. It is currently presided over by Montaigne Skyshard, though traditionally it is headed by the first born of the royal household. Unfortunately, Prince Ryan has left Essillion in search of adventure and the task has fallen to his cousin Montaigne.

Third Tier

The third (or lower) tier is made up of the bureaucratic, and educational needs of the city, as well as two Guardian posts flanking the river and the steps leading to the second tier.

To the south is the region of Vocerix, containing the court houses, jails, various civic buildings, and foreign embassies. The temple of Vocerix also doubles as the Council Hall and is known as the Hall of the Royal Sphynx. The current High Cleric of Vocerix is an elderly man, nearing retirement whose name is Winterthorpe Skyshard. He is also the uncle to Queen Jalisha and very well respected. His second ranking priest is a middle-aged woman named Bessa Suntower and she is expected to take his place soon. She is well-liked by the populace but the council is unsure of her fortitude in matters of criminal justice.

One of the buildings on the third tier, near the Mount steps is a very popular marriage hall called The Mountain’s Peak Marriage Hall and it is run by an ex-priest of Josefan named Lady Firetress. Pristell and Josefan typically do not get along but Lady Firetress has made a name for herself on the Mount on the opposite side of the noble houses. While the marriage halls on the city levels are fine, the nobles of Essillion still want to have the pomp and circumstance due their birthright. The Mountain’s Peak provides that level of sophistication and fashion. A group of famous bards called the Mountain Peak Poets Society made their start at Lady Firetress’ establishment and they have made a good living traveling the lands and inspiring love all around them.

On the far north side of the third tier are some other lesser noble houses and the Royal Museum of Essillion. The Royal Museum is reserved for those who have donated to it, typically only the wealthy or noble families will attend it. Occasionally the University gets permission to have some field trips to the Royal Museum but the nobles require very strict supervision for those that are not of noble birth.

The majority of the region of Gnurich is occupied by the huge library and temple to Gnurich called the Owl’s Rookery (or just the Rookery), the University of Essillion, and the Hatchery, as well as the two museums open to the general public (Museum of Fantastical Knowledge, and the Museum of Wondrous Artifacts).

The Owl’s Rookery is home to the temple of Gnurich and is looked over by the venerable Master Librarian Hoorik Inkheart. Hoorik is desperate to find a replacement as he is very old and tired. He wants to make the Owl’s Rookery the bastion of knowledge to rival the library in old Starhelm City. He has his eye on a very clever librarian name Lydia and is hoping she will take up the task of revitalizing the temple to Gnurich. Hoorik also founded a monastery in Hollow’s Point, though he rarely travels there.

The University of Essillion is old, but has taken on some greater importance after the Fractioning. It is currently under the leadership of Headmaster Lionas Quintlore and he is a very stodgy and uptight headmaster, though he has genuine love of knowledge and his students. The majority of the students at the University are from noble birth or have wealthy parents in the merchant or craft industry. Lionas is considered the favourite to replace Hoorik by everyone except Hoorik. Politics being what they are has prevented Hoorik from naming his successor just yet.

The New College of Theory, or as it is more colloquially known, The Hatchery, is an expanded school that is open to those of lesser means. It is a school of the future and does not spend as much time looking at the past, as its parent school does. Its headmaster is Jonas Bristlebrow and he is very fond of bringing in traveling minstrels, scholars, or teachers from all over to speak to his students. He is loved by his students and his staff but there are many who think that he is another headmaster in a long line of headmasters who are breaking away from tradition.

Situated on the edge of the third tier, also sharing it with the city level, is the famous Essillion’s Edge, or just known as The Edge by the locals. There are two entrances to the Edge, one on the third tier, where the rich or the learned go, and the one on the city level where the common folk would enter. The third-tier entrance leads to a main floor and requires a cover charge of 1 Kingsmetal. The entrance is reinforced wood and metal and support beams secure it to the rocky floor and walls of The Mount. Once inside, the taproom is well decorated, good food is served, and a wide variety of fine drink can be bought. Minstrels, organized gambling, and a spot for dancing makes it a place suitable for a wide variety of tastes. An iron golem named Fancy guards the stairway up to the Eagles’ Nest and will not let anyone pass who does not insert a platinum piece into a slot in his outstretched hand. The Eagles’ Nest is decorated in the highest of fashion, scented and lit magically to provide nice ambience. The furniture is the utmost in comfort and the food is fit for noble palettes.

City Level

Situated just south of the river is a large covered marketplace that is the main area for commerce in Essillion. In the heart of the Greegis region, just south of the Hollow Fountain Clocktower is the five-sided building named the Dragon’s Hoard Commercial Complex that houses the permanent shops, stalls, and commercial interests. Five buildings surround each corner and are the offices of the individual ministers of trade. Each corner represents a different type of business but there are some crossovers. Culture (art, music, costumes, books Armaments (weapons, armour Sundries (trinkets, toys, crafts, unique items Food (cooking utensils, meals Tools (crafter’s tools, supplies)

Some individual shops dot the area north and south of the Hoard and get a lot of run off business or customers from those that don’t want to brave the craziness of the merchant house. Purveyors of all kinds of products, including services, entertainment, and money trade and lending exist in this area. The Dragon’s Hoard is currently run by the merchant guild The Mill and has increased their power base dramatically.

The temple to Greegis is called The Golden Palm and it is located just north of the Hoard. It also doubles as the currency exchange and is run by the Fair Friar, a fat, balding man of indeterminate age. He represents the mercantile nature of Greegis and the public face of the temple and clergy within Essillion. For those in the know, he also acts as a fence, an appraiser, and a consigliere to the Union of Shadows.

Just north of the river a few schools for the common folk are situated on the city level near The Mount in Gnurich’s region. A scribe shop and seller of books called Tink’s Inks is also open for those who want to get something written, purchase a book, or learn to do calligraphy, mapmaking, etc. It is run by an old Gnome named Tinkerbury Hollowhand who is always happy to get visitors and is willing to help anyone who can pay. He is called in to the schools to teach writing to the children also.

The main entrance to the Edge can be found on the outskirts of Gnurich’s city level region. To the uninitiated, from this angle the Edge looks like it is about to fall at any moment. It appears to teeter on the edge of destruction every night. The reality is that it is as strong as it has ever been thanks to some magical bolstering from a grateful wizard. The sounds of laughter, song, fighting, swearing, and general carousing always spills out into the street as the door to the Edge is constantly opening with comers and goers. Standing proudly near the entrance is the second Iron Golem named Foot, ready to deal with anyone who gets out of hand. He wields a Rocksteel maul called Diplomacy to help deter would be attackers, gifted to the Edge by Gauldrak Harmbringer, a deceased hero of Essillion. The innkeeper is a retired adventurer named Quintin Stronghair, who welcomes all with a warm smile and mug of Edge Ale (a sweet lime malt brewed only here-not available for export). A staircase to the second floor is guarded by a third Iron Golem named Fist who requires a single coin of Kingsmetal inserted into a slot in his outstretched hand in order to ascend.

The Hollow Fountain Clocktower was a gift from the Gnomes of Hollow’s Point and now makes up the central point of the city. It is a gathering place for many travelers and residents alike. The magic and ingenuity of the Clocktower allows it to let the residents of Essillion know what time it is, on the hour. Each spray upwards of water indicates the time of day, up to twelve. The colour of the water changes to dark blue during the second half of the day to indicate it is night. The day starts at dawn and goes to dusk, with the night starting at dusk to dawn. Each hour is approximate and can shift depending on when dawn starts. It is just west of the Golden Leaf Memorial Park.

The far north and far south west sections of the city house the entrances to the many mines that secure Essillion’s wealth. The miners and peasants, as well as some craftsmen that work the mines also live in the housing located near those entrances. The city guard are very stringent in letting only those that are authorized to enter do so. The mines themselves are also patrolled often by city guards and priests of Kleio. Only those that have business in the mines tend to go there and the guards are quick to redirect those just wandering to more appropriate locales within the city. Both sides have a temple to Kleio, the southern temple, named The Anvil, focuses on forging, blacksmithing, and items of quality, while the north temple, named The Arches, focuses on structures, architecture, and practicality. In times past these two temples were closely aligned but in recent years there has been a bit of a schism between the two as the north end has been influenced by their association with the nobles of the city. They have taken an attitude of superiority over their southern brothers. The north temple is run by Master Architect Blasset Skydigger and he epitomizes the smug and arrogant nature of Kleio. The southern temple is run by Forgemaster Silloren Oreshine, a Goliath who does his best to ignore Blasset’s taunts and jibes. He focuses on making his clergy the best smiths, forgers, and miners in the region.

While the priests of Kleio oversee and control the workings of the mines, the three major noble families have the legitimate and historical rights to the mines of Essillion. From each mine is an underground tunnel that leads through the Mount to the base just east of the Wyrmclaw Bridge. The ore is gathered and shipped off to there to be taken to the Mill, separated and ground, and then finally collected.

All the roads leading into and out of Essillion are tended and maintained by followers of Parfin, though not necessarily the same ones from day to day. Those followers of Parfin that find themselves in Essillion take it upon themselves to keep the roads and thoroughfares, even the less traveled ones clean, in repair, and easily accessible. Near the centre of the city is Horizon’s Bridge, and leading from it southward is Walkers’ Way, both in honour of Parfin the Farstepper. The temple to Parfin, located at the foot of Horizon’s Bridge is called Horizon’s Haven and it is maintained by Goldfinder Lindel Pennybright, a Halfling of great humour and patience. He is responsible for the maintenance but he has a team of wandering followers, visitors, and helpers that rotate throughout the year to keep the temple, and all shrines well cared for.

Along the main road through the city gates, located on both sides are the pop-up shops and traveling merchant stalls. They are required to set up north of Deathgate Road and Riverstone Road and on either side of the Essillion Trail. They do not set up further north than the Hollow Fountain Clocktower and the city guard and soldiers are very strict about their placement. They require a clear path to the front gates in case of attack and for safety. All manner of goods and services can be found along this road but they are not permanent and can sell out very quickly before moving on. Fights occasionally break out over prime spots but the Essillion guards quickly put an end to any disruptions.

North and west of Horizon bridge is The Mill. A watermill that has been around since the founding of the mines. It is used to separate and grind the ore from the mines into their useful and component parts before being shipped off. It is owned by a guild of merchants known simply as The Mill. They also have a sawmill and a grain mill outside of town. The three buildings that make up The Mill include the mill proper, the collection house, and the refinery. This guild has acquired much wealth and power in Essillion that they also run the Dragon’s Hoard Commercial Complex. They have recently been given a spot on the Royal Council since the demise of the Silverfist family.

Following Deathgate Road southward, just as you enter the city will take you to the cemetery of Essillion and the surrounding area. The temple of Morthos called the Mourning Hall, is situated just outside the cemetery and is run by Soulguide Barthos Mistbearer. He is a strong and hefty man of middle years, and his dour face hides a wicked sense of humour. He can be a frightening presence when he is angered but, thankfully he is a very patient man and does not anger easily. He is surprisingly empathetic and comforting to those that can look past his outward appearance.

In the front of the cemetery is an asylum to treat the addled or insane, nicknamed Gloomy Gables; nobody can remember its real name anymore. It is headed up by a Tallfellow named Quail ‘Rattleeyes’ Finney, who looks like he might have been a patient at one time. He can go from creepy to comforting and back again in the blink of an eye.

The hospice for the elderly, sick, or dying called Mercy Hall is run by an elderly woman named Grace Godfrey. She is frail of body but strong in spirit and mind. Soulguide Barthos is very protective of her and those that cross her risk his anger. There are very few that take that chance. Rumours abound that Grace Godfrey was once a high priest to Morthos in the Halls of the Cleansed Souls many years past but that something transpired there that forced her to leave.

Heading north along Riverstone Road will take you to the region of Tereale and the Healing House of Essillion, as well as Mother Light’s Child Nursery. There you will also find the temple to Tereale called the Gleaming Shrine, though it is much larger than its name would suggest. Highmother Ingrid Stormarm is the youngest Highmother appointed to the church of Tereale. She is a plain-looking woman with striking green eyes and has lived in Essillion all of her life. She is an excellent healer, leader, and compassionate woman, who is not afraid to get her hands dirty. She has a great team of helpers, including Katherine Fairfellow, her most revered nursemaid. The children’s nurseries are extremely well cared for and Ingrid and Katherine have received many visits from noble dignitaries, including the king and queen, for their work helping the city.

This area is also the home to the temple of Josefan named The Font of Love, presided over by Ladyheart Emeline Fairfax. This striking, dark haired woman dresses in robes of white and carries a staff of entwined white snakes. She works very hard to ensure that love blossoms in Essillion, but she sometimes comes to odds with the Order of the Lady’s Claw as their philosophy speaks more to hedonism than true love. She appreciates passion when it is directed in a more long-lasting and productive manner, not just for passion’s sake. She can often be found at the children’s nursery helping out and she is on very good terms with the church of Tereale.

Essillion is well fed with many farmlands immediately around the city and further east and north of the city, even as far as Lutien's Vale. The military does a good job of protecting farms but the further away from the city a farm lies the more dangerous it is for the farmer. Raids, animals, and harsh weather can sometimes afflict a farmer but the closer to the Vale one gets the better the farmland becomes. Many farmers take the risk.

The farmlands and the gardens are considered to be the province of Mirriam and she has a large temple named Bounty’s Blessing near the Essillion Gates just off the Essillion Trail. It is run by an elderly man named Horton Bristlebough, who has gone a little deaf and can be very cantankerous. He means well but his frustrations at aging make him somewhat difficult to deal with. Most will go to the lesser priests of the temple if they can help it. A few shrines also exist within the city, most notably in the Golden Leaf Memorial Park and the tavern/greenhouse called Mirriam’s Eyes.

Golden Leaf Memorial Park is a large green area watched over by followers of Mirriam. This park, which commemorates the Human city south of the ruins of Starhelm City that was totally destroyed in the aftermath of the Fractioning, was constructed about 50 years ago, but has become a favourite place of residents or visitors alike. A brief history of Essillion can be traced through a wandering path through the park, adorned with statues and plaques. A small shrine to Mirriam is wreathed with flowers and woven sheaves of wheat that seem to flourish and grow even in all but the dead of winter. The caretaker of the shrine is a young priest of Mirriam named Genese Moonmeadow. Genese is very welcoming to friend and stranger alike, and always has a wreath of flowers on her head or flowers woven in her hair. The followers of Mirriam will work with the followers of Gnurich to maintain the pathways and walkways of the park. Even in the coldest and snowiest days the paths are safe to travel thanks to the partnership of the two organizations.

Shops, Inns, and Other Places of Interest

Located at the end of Riversedge Road, just south of the Gleaming Shrine, sits Mirriam’s Eyes and its owner Kapple Lithorn, a retired priest of Mirriam. He is a kind man that is often found sampling some teas or fruity drinks with his patrons. He is very used to the heat but in the summer months this place can be a bit hot. In the winter it is a favourite spot of those trying to escape the cold of Essillion’s harsh weather. Kapple and his Halfling wife Lucidia, along with their Tallfellow son Drew manage to keep the business hopping all year long. They have a strong friendship with Honeydew’s Sweets, Treats, and Fine Eats and both shops are often found giving samples of the other’s creations or products. Rumours of Drew and Sophie being romantically connected have not escaped the awareness of both their parents, and they couldn’t be happier to officially connect the two shops.

Honeydew’s Sweets, Treats and Fine Eats is a bakery and small eatery located in the Elmwood neighbourhood, near the Healing House of Essillion. It is run by Dogar Honeydew and his wife Nureen. They have three children; their eldest daughter Regan has left Essillion with Melwyn’s Mighty Minstrels a couple of years ago. She returns as often as she can to regale her family with stories of adventure and to give them news of the outside world; their teenage son Rogen has recently left to join the priesthood of Parfin but he may return if they do not accept him into their ranks; their youngest daughter Sophie looks like she might just inherit the shop when the Honeydews retire. This family is well liked by most people in their neighbourhood and Regan has made quite a name for herself in the minstrel circle. As often as not people will come to the shop for a bit of gossip or news that she might have brought back with her. Her brother is her biggest fan. Dogar’s shop is not as refined as Rinthorpe’s but the commoners love coming to visit and have a small bite. Dogar will often give free samples of his wife’s experimental treats, hoping to one day be recognized by the nobles as a purveyor of fine foods. They have a great relationship with the Lithorns and Mirriam’s Eyes, often spending their down time with each other, relaxing or having a nice meal or tea.

Located just south of Golden Leaf Memorial Park, nestled in the Parkside neighbourhood is Rinthorpe’s Fine Pastries. This popular bakery and pastry shop is run by Rinthorpe Dappledew, a short, fat and balding man in his late 40s. He is always wearing a white apron covered in flour and sugar and he is always quick to greet his customers with a smile and a laugh. He knows most people by name and his reputation as a pastry chef is unequalled in all of Essillion. Even the King has been known to visit Rinthorpe on occasion to sample his specialty – Golden Sunrise (a sweet tart made with special honey and a secret ingredient that Rinthorpe will not reveal). Everyone knows him to be friendly and gregarious, and you can often get a fine rumour with your visit. What most people do not know is that Rinthorpe Dappledew is actually a high-level priest in the service of Leftis. His whole disguise as a pastry chef is a clever ruse to distract from his true purpose in Essillion. He leads the underground cult to the Deceiver and those who know his true calling can get messages or information from him at his shop. By use of a secret code and sometimes things hidden in his pastries he can direct followers to their next meeting or aid them in their current situation. Leftis is very fond of Rinthorpe and will often give him visions or manifest himself to the pudgy baker.

Tucked away in the Lockhaven neighbourhood lies a quaint shop named the Battered Helms Fish Shop. As the name might suggest it sells fish that has been specially imported from the Lake of Battered Helms. The shop owners are a strange pair named Binthis and Parta. They have only just recently opened their establishment but, despite the odour that pervades the area the shop has done remarkably well. So well, in fact, they have plans to open a second shop on the other side of town. The two partners met while Binthis was traveling to the Lake and he tasted some fish that Parta had just caught. Always on the lookout for a new venture, Binthis convinced Parta to go into business with him and open a fish store in Essillion. Parta has been pleasantly surprised by their success and is eager to introduce her favourite dish to Essillion, Flaming Swordfish on a bed of Pepper Lettuce. They are talking of opening up a restaurant also, but they will wait to see how their second shop does first.

Just south of Wyrmclaw Bridge is a tack and supplies shop by the name of Old Casks’ Odds and Ends. This ex-cleric of Parfin keeps a fine selection of all types of equipment. If you want the ‘good stuff’ you need to convince Old Cask of your need. A bit of wine or juicy gossip sometimes is all that is needed to grease his palms.

Taking up a whole city block, north on Wyrmclaw Way is Steelfist’s Weaponsmith and Armourer. This well-known military shop has the largest contract in weaponsmithing and they provide the armour to the city guard and Essillion’s army. Always busy, there are dozens of employees keeping the business running smoothly. It is headed by its owner Flandar Steelfist, A Dwarf of great skill, and one of the wealthiest citizens of Essillion. He takes great pride in his work, and his close connection to the Dwarves of the Barrier Guard grant him a near monopoly on high quality weapons and armour. He has a whole division devoted to supplying the city’s guard and army with their weapons and armour and he just renewed his contract with the King. He has a few specialists on staff that can make unique or rare items but he charges high coin for his work. All his work has his symbol etched into it, a stylized mailed fist.

The Tiger Den Monastery is located south of the Dragon Hoard and deep within the Commerceclaw neighbourhood. A path leads west to east through the gated complex, and within the confines of the monastery the path is lined with dedicated Steles that tell the history and glory of the Order of the Lady's Claw. It houses shrines to the Tiger Maiden, and to the Great Tiger, as well as housing the monks that choose to stay there. South of the Stele path are the homes, study halls, and training grounds of the monks, but to the north of the path is where most non-monks will visit. Hedon Hall, a place that serves as a social club, a dance hall, a tavern, and a brothel, welcomes many visitors through its doors. Some are brazen and open, while there are those who wish to remain out of sight from the common folk. The monks do their best to honour both types of customers. The head of the order is Sybarite Lucadia Capistran, also known as the Black Tiger. She is a Human of extraordinary beauty and magnetism, drawing most into her confidences with ease. She grew up in Essillion and the Tiger Den Monastery, being taught by the previous White Tiger. After her master departed to experience the outside world she left the leadership of the Tiger Den to Lucadia. The Black Tiger, as she is now known, is a favoured follower of The Tiger Maiden and she trains those in the Order of the Lady’s Claw to be ferocious in battle, and in other areas of their lives. They train hard, they play hard, and she is not above making some money for the efforts of her followers. The Black Tiger can be aggressive and hot-tempered at times, but she is fiercely devoted to the Tiger Maiden and those women under her care.

Many from the Order of the Lady’s Claw are trained in the Primal Tattoo fighting style and they are most often given their tattoos by the Black Tiger herself. There are others, of course, that can provide tattoos, but the Black Tiger is the best amongst them. More often than not, the monks of the Order of the Lady’s Claw have some kind of tattoo, but they are not all trained in the special style, they just prefer the aesthetics of the body art.

Geography

Essillion is one of two major Human cities still left on Starhelm, the other being Avandar. It is the older of the two and holds to deep tradition and history. Carved into the mountain hollow on the northern part of the Barrier Guard of Denethen, the mines of Essillion were gifted by the Dwarves to the Humans over 1400 years ago. The city of Essillion has grown eastward from the mines, even extending to the eastern side of the hollow. Many farms dot the countryside as well as some beyond the mountains that feed the city and the surrounding villages. Patrols from Essillion ensure that the surrounding lands are well protected. In addition, the fair friends Essillion enjoys include the Dwarves and Halflings from ages past and the Elves of Aspenshield. The city of Hollow's Point protects the northern villages as much as Essillion does by virtue of their mercenary army.

Essillion is a large, walled city, protected by mountains on its west, north, and partially south side. There is one main gate that leads from the valley westward toward the city. Farmland, orchards, and open ground extend a few miles south and also to the east toward Lutien's Vale. A few small villages and towns affiliate with Essillion as suburbs of the city but they are close to the Vale and a bit north toward Aspenshield. While the king makes sure to send patrols often to these outlying areas they are still in danger of raids from barbarians or the Fallen of Azdurok.

The Dragonspine river flows out of the mountain, under the Palace of Kings, and through the city, heading east. It separates the city into two main areas, not equally distributed, with four bridges joining the two areas. Alucar’s Mount, or simply The Mount dominates the western wall and has three distinct levels, or tiers. The royal palace is the sole structure on the First Tier but other buildings make up the second and third tier before the main level of the city is reached.

Climate

Essillion is a temperate city, protected by the mountains from extreme weather, but they do suffer from cold winters. Cold winds blow through, with the occasional lightning storm that shake off the mountains. In the summer it is very pleasant, the growing season is typical and predictable, allowing for farmers to maximize their yields. The presence of the clergy of Mirriam helps most citizens understand or prepare for any inclement weather that may afflict them.

Natural Resources

Typical ore and minerals can be found in the mines, including silver, gold, iron, and copper.

Essillion is the rare place where Kingsmetal can be found in abundance. It can be found elsewhere but in much smaller quantities. It is considered valuable in Essillion but marginally better than silver elsewhere.

The farms and woods outside the city walls provide much food and wood and Essillion does much to protect and include all citizens, even those not behind the city walls.
