Spellcasting Vessel Abnormality

Exdunathricytosis

Sometimes erroneously known as Spellcasting Deformity and known medically as Exdunathricytosis, Spellcasting Vessel Abnormality (shortened to SVA) is a Mana System condition that prevents the Spellcasting Vessels from properly forming and dispersing. Rather than being a singular condition, SVA is a generic term for a small number of Exdunathric System conditions and is typically used when a more specific diagnosis has yet to be made.

SVA conditions are typically not fatal in and of themselves, however they can lead to other conditions, such as Mana Leakage or weakness in the Weave Channel, which can seriously impact on a patient's ability to cast spells. In some cases, SVAs can lead to complete deterioration of the Spellcasting System and thus completely prevent non-innate spellcasting. SVAs are always limited to the Spellcasting Vessels themselves, and have no impact on the function of the Weave Channel outside of additional complications arising from prolonged occurrences.

While SVAs as a whole are considered uncommon, the majority of spellcasters will experience some form of minor SVA at some point in their spellcasting lives. These are normally benign dispersions that occur in stressful situations or when the caster is involved with overexuberant spellcasting. SVAs rarely occur during Ritual Casting, and are more common in what is called Combat Casting; i.e. spellcasting during a fight.

Causes

SVAs can have different causes depending on the type of SVA that is present. As an example, Dunamic Expulsion Disfunction (Spellcasting Impotence) is a condition that occurs when signals from the Weave Channel to activate the Spellcasting System fail to reach the Spellcasting Trigger Cells, which is typically caused when where is damage to the Weave Channel transmitters. Exdunathric Poikiloangiolysis (Irregular Spellcasting Dispersal), on the other hand, is an inability to maintain stable Spellcasting Vessels once they have been formed, resulting in irregular breakdown cycles. This is typically caused by irritants in the Dunamic System that prevent the proper formation of stable Dunamocytes during Vessel Formation.

Identifying the type of SVA is incredibly important to identifying the cause of the disfunction, and therefore the treatment of it.

Acute SVAs can also be caused by stress or improper handling of magic items or materials.

Symptoms

SVAs typically present through the inability to properly cast spells, even though the Mana Pool contains Mana. This can be as simple as a downgrade in a spell's power Tier during casting, or as serious as a complete inability to cast non-innate spells at all.

Different SVAs display slightly different symptoms in different levels of severity.

Treatment

Acute SVAs typically resolve themselves within minutes of the incident occurring, and therefore do not require any medical intervention.

Other types of SVA may require abstinence from spellcasting while the type of SVA is identified. Only once the specific SVA has been found can a specific treatment regime begin. There are no "general" treatments for SVAs save for magical abstinence, and offering the incorrect treatment plan can lead to further complications or injury.

Prognosis

SVAs themselves are not fatal, and most forms will resolve themselves without additional issue with adequate rest and, in the case of chronic SVA, the correct treatment. However, repeated instances of SVAs in a short time span, or SVAs that do not resolve within the treatment span, can lead to additional complications.

Sequela

Complications from SVAs are rare, but typically involve additional conditions such as Postvesical Dunamostaxis (Mana Leakage after the Mana Pool), Dunathraparesis (Weave Channel Weakness), or Dunathrectasis (Weave Channel Deformation). In rare and very severe cases, SVAs can lead to Exdunathricide (Spellcasting Vessel Death), which would completely eliminate the patient's ability to case non-innate spells.
