Changeling

New Day New You

"A face is only a promise the world expects you to keep."
— Kleomana Traylin, changeling actress
Changelings are shapeshifting humanoids whose mutable forms have long made them the subject of fascination, fear, and folklore. While many races define identity through bloodlines, appearance, or ancestry, changelings understand identity as something far more personal. To them, a face is a tool, a language, and sometimes a shield.   Their natural form is pale and almost featureless. Smooth white or gray skin, colorless eyes, and sparse white hair give many changelings an appearance that others find unsettling. This form is rarely seen outside trusted company, as most changelings spend their lives wearing faces borrowed from countless identities.   A changeling's transformation is neither illusion nor disguise. Bone, muscle, skin, and voice shift together into a new appearance. They can alter age, ancestry, sex, and countless individual features, though their overall size remains unchanged. Skilled changelings often maintain dozens of carefully crafted personas, each with its own history, mannerisms, profession, and social circle.   Because appearance is so fluid, changeling culture places extraordinary importance on honesty in matters that truly matter. A changeling may deceive another about its face without shame, but lying about one's word, loyalties, or intentions is often considered a far greater betrayal. Among their own kind, introductions are commonly made by sharing chosen names rather than appearances.   Many changelings become spies, diplomats, actors, investigators, merchants, or confidence artists. Others seek quiet lives where they can settle into a single identity for decades at a time. Few experiences are more exhausting to a changeling than constantly maintaining false lives without anyone who knows their true self.   Relations with other races vary widely. Some kingdoms welcome changelings for their talents, while others distrust them outright, fearing infiltration and deception. Suspicion has forced many changelings to become exceptionally observant, learning to read expressions, habits, and unspoken expectations as naturally as others learn language.   Among changelings, trust is often demonstrated in simple ways. Revealing one's natural face to another is considered an act of profound vulnerability. Allowing someone else to choose your next face is regarded as an even greater expression of faith, one rarely shared outside families, lifelong companions, or lovers.

"Humans spend years trying to discover who they are. A changeling can spend those same years deciding who they wish to become."
