Aarakocra

Call to the Sky

"The earth teaches patience. The sea teaches endurance. Only the sky teaches freedom."
— Old Aarakocra saying
Few peoples understand the world as the aarakocra do. To them, mountains are not barriers but resting places, rivers are shining ribbons that divide forests, and kingdoms are little more than temporary markings upon the land. Where others measure distance in miles, the aarakocra measure it in currents of wind.   Aarakocra are avian humanoids descended from the Elemental Plane of Air, though many have lived upon the Material Plane for countless generations. Their hollow bones, broad wings, and keen eyesight make them unmatched scouts and messengers, capable of crossing terrain in hours that would delay other travelers for days.   Most aarakocra build their settlements atop cliffs, mountain peaks, ancient ruins, or towering trees where the open sky is never far away. These aeries are often simple by the standards of other civilizations, consisting of woven nests, stone platforms, rope bridges, and communal gathering places exposed to the wind. Possessions are kept to a minimum, for anything too heavy becomes a burden to flight.   Their society prizes freedom, vigilance, and cooperation. Every member of an aerie contributes to its survival, whether by hunting, crafting, standing watch, or teaching fledglings. Leadership is usually earned through wisdom and experience rather than inheritance, and many disputes are settled through observation, discussion, or ceremonial flights rather than violence.   To many surface races, aarakocra appear detached or impatient. Their lives are spent constantly moving, watching weather patterns, and following seasonal migrations that seem incomprehensible to those bound to the ground. Yet this apparent aloofness often masks genuine curiosity. Few races appreciate stories carried on the wind more than the aarakocra, and travelers bearing tales from distant lands are welcomed warmly.   Aarakocra rarely seek conquest or wealth. Gold cannot be eaten, nor does it lighten one's wings. Instead, they value useful craftsmanship, maps, weather lore, songs, and favors freely given. A gift that makes a journey safer is worth far more than a jeweled crown.   Though peaceful by nature, an aarakocra defending its home becomes a fearsome opponent. Fighting from the air, they strike swiftly before vanishing into clouds or mountain mists, forcing enemies to battle on terms few can match.   Above all else, the aarakocra believe that every creature belongs somewhere within the world's great currents. Some walk the earth. Some sail the sea. They were simply born to follow the wind.

"You groundfolk spend your lives building walls to keep danger out. We simply fly where the danger isn't."
— Kehri Skycaller, aarakocra elder
