Galtern

Galtern is the southernmost and largest of the Cluster islands. It is the cluster's agricultural center, raising fish and eggs and crops on farms both inland and offshore. Stolc, its largest and busiest city, is famous for medical knowledge. It has the highest population density of any island, with 35-40% of the inhabitants living and working on a nighttime schedule, sharing quarters with those on the day shift.

Geography

Galtern can be most simply described as a broad plain with a slight rise along the center, flanked by mountainous complexes. The western mountains are much more heavily eroded than the east, with abundant cliffs and caves all along its curling shoreline. Rivers from both complexes feed the plains.

History

Galtern's first settlements were refugee camps. The midplains were deemed the safest place to keep evacuees from the ocean's eroding atolls until the entire Cluster could be explored and mapped. By the time the last transport sailed, some camps had spent two or three generations in one place and become comfortable there. They founded Stolc, and its hospitals and medical schools were originally created to study and treat the health problems that arose naturally from the crowded camp conditions.
Galtern is the source of the units of time now used throughout the Cluster Islands, first adopted there in the middle of the second Volcanic millennium after the invention of air-wave communication required more time-accurate communication between hospitals.
At the beginning of the third Volcanic millennium, Galtern was the first island to be linked to Mraydor by boat conduit. The two islands together formed the beginning of the Unity, which ended 40 years later in a battle on Mraydor. The remnants fled to Galtern, but were ousted from there the following year by Stolc's arm of the Security Patrol.

Tourism

On the whole, Galtern is not particularly welcoming to off-island visitors. Their embrace of the Unity in the early 2000s Vol was based on a promise of the economic benefit from encouraging residents of Mraydor to spend their time and resources there. Unfortunately, the Mrayderi had little understanding of or respect for the Galternene valuation system and hygiene standards. Misunderstandings abounded, and the relationship was soured further by the few who overstepped ignorance into deliberate violations. Ever since the defeat of the Unity, Galtern's most well-known attractions have been closed to all off-islanders except those with preapproved business. As such, it is not a good destination for social experience travel.
On the other tack, if you're interested in education experience, Galternene are often happy to share their knowledge, especially in the field of medicine. Show genuine interest in their work and anyone from doctors to fish farmers will explain the work they're doing.
For those interested in awe experience, boats can be hired to visit many of the natural features along Galtern's mountain coasts. You may ask your guide for a closer look at something that catches your attention, but do not insist. They're more familiar with the landscape than you are and know where it's not safe to go.
