Skejon Aesterinn

Skejon is the deuteragonist of the main story, and part of the main gang of Quaken, Jon, Tarno, and herself. Serves as both a trusted friend and close companion to Quaken, and is a parallel to his rapidly degenerating morals, never herself compromising her sense of morality.

History

Ad Astra Per Aspera

Skejon was first activated on the spaceship-turned-habitat, the Ad Astra Per Aspera, above the planet Shiyoi, by a pair of largely unnotable synthetics. There she lived like any other person, joining the local Shiyoian military at the age of 30, getting trained as a fighter pilot, gaining the rank of Santō rikui, equivalent to Lieutenant in many militaries. From there, she would eventually join the 7th Shiyoi Thunderstrucks as a fighter pilot, and served in the unit for a while.
By her 80s, her parents had died in some conflict, and she had inherited the family's heirloom weapons. She would go fight in some regional war, get shot down, captured, and held as a prisoner of war for a few years, eventually being released with the war's end, and feeling she had nothing left on the Ad Astra, decided to instead wander human space, eventually ending up on a backwater planet by the name of Ochtotne Prime, in the 2830s.

Ochtotne Prime

Instead of living on a habitat or spaceship like she had done for most of her life, Skejon opted to settle in Lanfal City, on the planet's surface. She would live here, rather unnotably, for quite a while. Eventually, she also got a job as a surface-to-orbit-to-surface freighter pilot, ensuring a decent amount of wealth.
Some 20 years ago, right after becoming a proper full citizen of the Kingdom of Anakrion, she would be called to serve in the nation's military. Through a long bureocratic process, she was accepted into the job of a fighter pilot, befitting her skills, in the airbase of Diendam. In the base, she met another fellow Anakrionian doing his due service; Quaken, working as a regular soldier in the Anakrionian Air Force. The two became fast friends, and their friendship would continue and develop past their service and several decades into the future. Later, she would later also meet one Jon, as well as Stringer, both a few weeks prior to the main story.

Skills and education

Having joined the military in her 30s, Skejon doesn't have a particularily extensive education on civilian matters. She is intelligent, and knows a fair few things, but war, combat and military matters are where her skills lie. She is a very competent pilot, mainly with fighter craft, but the training she received involved smaller spacecraft as well, about the size class of the The Star-Reaver.

"This ship is old. Really old. If I had to guess, it's at least three centuries old, maybe more. Hm hm, the interface isn't too unfamiliar to what I've used before, and it looks to have a pilot's plug connection point, that's good."
"I've made some other checks; the FTL drive is in good enough condition, and the numbers it's showing are acceptable. It works. Can you fly it, Skejon?"
"Yes, most likely. It'll be a bit for me to get used to the computers' architecture, but BCI connections haven't changed that much over the years, especially not with the age of this ship. It'll be fine. Probably."
— Skejon and Jon, discussing the Star-Reaver's condition while on the Void Traveller

She is also fairly knowledgeable in mechanical stuff, military stuff more so, naturally. Most relevantly for the main story, she is a highly skilled fighter, and unlike, say, Jon or Quaken, has had a fair share of professional military training, though limited experience due to his chosen role in the military. Out of the main gang, she is easily the most skilled in a fight, and while overall, her physical abilities are about the same as the rest, her skill does mean that in most fights, she would beat the rest of the main gang.

    Skejon, again by MadToxin
Being a few centuries old, and created in a relatively technologically developed region, Skejon's body is fairly advanced. It has decent strength, but her best abilities are her speed and precision. Her Form-plating is more durable than, say, Jon's, but falls short compared to Quaken, for example. She also has a Pilot's plug, allowing her to connect her mind to various systems, mainly vehicles.

    Weapons

Skejon carries two roughly arming sword-sized weapons with her, both family heirlooms that she inherited. One is the saw-tooth sword, Orbital Strike, fashioned after the flames of an interstellar colony ship, and the other is the Arashi no Shiyoi (eng. Storm of Shiyoi), a straight sword made of a rare carbon-coated steel alloy, with exceptional craftsmanship.

    Personality

Skejon is a rather stern and no-nonsense fellow, owing to her military background. Even still, since it has been a while since then, she isn't all about strict formality. She can and does crack jokes at times, but that military background does shine through in tougher situations, where she often manages to retain her cool exceptionally well, a trait she shares with Tarno. Does not mind things getting messy, and is very difficult to shake in most ways, again owing to her past.

"We need to get moving, now, Jon! If we stay here in this warzone for a moment longer, we'll end up like the two we just fought; We won't see tomorrow. I'm not going to die on this sun-schorched desert just because you can't get over killing some guy, an enemy actively attacking you no less! Get yourself together, this won't be the first time this happens, I'm sure of it. I know you agree, so let's go. Quaken's waiting."
    — Skejon, during the main gang's excursion to Khar'Ak 'Than

    Personal Relationships

    Quaken

Skejon and Quaken have known each other for a long while. About 30 years or so. Over that time, the two have grown very close, and are the best of friends. From sparring sessions to playing video games, the two are seen together rather often.
"I want to test him, see if he's really all he's cracked up to be. I am the best of us, pretty handily. Or am I wrong?"
"You know how I feel about that claim."
"Yeah, you say that, Quaken, but what's our win-loss ratio again? Remind me, will you?"
      "Weeb."
      "Warmonger."
    — Quaken and Skejon

    Tarno

Skejon and Tarno have a friendly relationship and a healthy respect for the other due to them both having extensive military history. Ultimately, that is about as far as it goes. They're friends, though not particularly close ones.
"Wanna have a shooting contest, Tarno? I know you're a good shot, but you ever seen me on the range? I'm not half bad, y'know."
"Hah, maybe. Sure, but we're not using my gun, alright?"
    — Skejon and Tarno

    Jon

Jon meets Skejon a few weeks before the main story, and they hit it off very well. Much as she may not seem like it, Skejon has a more-than-passing interest in science, and finds Jon's whole position as a long-time researcher very impressive. The two also enjoy sparring a lot, especially since their fighting styles are near-polar opposites.
"It's fun to have someone who's not your colleague to rant science to, y'know? Not to mock Quaken, but he's not the best at getting it, and Tarno doesn't really care, but Skejon? She's cool. She's deep down just a big nerd, like me. I respect it."
    — Jon

    Stringer

Stringer finds Skejon very relatable; A military fellow with nothing much to lose anymore. That respect goes both ways, and though Skejon, like all of the main gang, looks up to Stringer, she's on a bit more of a even plane with him, as the best fighter and most military-trained member of the gang.
"Ah, Skejon, then. You're good. Really good, honestly. I have nothing to teach or fix here, you're plenty good enough as you are."
    — Stringer, appraising the main gang

    Family

Skejon's family, two parents and a sibling, all synthetics, are currently all dead, killed in some war back home. When she knew them, she had a healthy relationship with them, even while being absent for a long while fighting for the ASTUN. Despite it all happening half a century ago, it still stings, and she holds her two swords as near sacred, going out of her way to keep them safe.
"Orbital Strike and Arashi no Shiyoi are both very high-quality near-masterworks. I'm proud to own them. Orbital Strike is the more stylized one of the two, and, in pure combat use, lesser. Arashi no Shiyoi is reliable and durable. I have never once had it break or even deform on me. They're exceptional blades, crafted a long while ago."
    — Skejon

    Main Story Relevance

Skejon's role in the main story. Major spoilers.
Skejon starts off the main story as one of the first characters introduced. She is Quaken's long-time friend, and rather quickly introduces him to Jon, whom she befriended a few weeks ago. She also introduces the two to Stringer and his plan to take down Mad and his organization, largely kicking off the main story proper.
Later on, when the time for Stringer's plan comes about, Skejon, along with the rest of the main gang, Tarno now also included, travel to New Suterr. On the way there, she stays behind to watch the car while Quaken and Tarno check the Dertii Watchtower for a potential vehicle and/or way forward. Later, in New Suterr proper, she and Quaken go together to find Mad when the main gang split up. The end up fighting Chaer, and get tied up there while Jon and Tarno, and later Stringer, face off with Mad, who ends up escaping.
Later again, when they formulate a rough plan for assaulting Mad's base, they end up splitting up, and eventually meeting back up and facing Mad's generals. Skejon fights Olinda, and while the fight is fairly even, it is not quite so, and Olinda is winning. Then, Stringer appears, the generals shift their attention to him, and he beats them handily, right when Mad also shows up. The two then duel, and, eventually, Stringer is killed. The main gang then end up making a hasty retreat.
Eventually, after insight gained by Quaken and Tarno, the main gang decide they need to head to Earth itself. For this, they need to get to Torgallon, the orbital capital of the Kingdom of Anakrion. They make it up just fine, but soon end up attacked by Mad's brute force squad and another brutal fight ensues, splitting the gang. One by one, the main gang do beat their opponents, and make it back together, though before they can do that, they are intercepted by Olinda, as well as the current King of Anakrion, Rexilis. In this skirmish, Skejon is knocked out completely by Rexilis.
She recovers aboard an interstellar transit ship, heading to Rakt'Akla. The main gang spend about half a day here, until they arrive. At this point, Olinda once again strikes, forcing the gang to evacuate in a hurry. They ship they grab is already compromised, however, and ends up breaking apart on their landing to Ak'Thakra, splitting up the group. Skejon ends up near Khar'Ak'Than, with Jon, and the two have to make their way to the rest, figuring that the old tradeship near where Quaken ended up is the best. Skejon and Jon, then, have to find a ride. They end up scuttling around the city, and get into a fight with a pair of soldiers. They win, and find a bike, and proceed to embark on the ride.

Once at the Void Traveller, the gang meet Nex and are once again reunited, and soon departing on the Star-Reaver. They make it to orbit just fine, and make a very hasty FTL transition. Now sealed in the warp bubble, Olinda strikes, having hid on the ship prior. They attack the main gang, taking out Jon and effectively forcing Quaken and Skejon out, and Tarno steps up for the duel. With Skejon's assistance, he barely wins, heavily injured, and the main gang can continue. When the drive is fixed, the group end up near a star, and with the drive inoperable, decide to take the slow way; travelling around 0.2 light-years in three or so years, with the very much not interstellar-intended ship they have.
Now arriving in the system, they find a single habitat within, one Esdrimalc, and board it, being welcomed by a small group of researchers. They give medical aid to Tarno, and are willing to give the main gang a replacement drive if they help them retrieve supplies, including the drive, from a storage place. The main gang accept, and eventually begin a trip to the warehouse, ultimately being attacked by the Zookeeper. Fighting against her kraschakaskdkakcsk army, they make a withdraw, with the supplies now being moved, making their way back in a fighting retreat. However, there are simply too many of them, and Tarno stays back to keep them away. As his poleaxe is unuseable, Skejon makes the difficult decision to throw him Orbital Strike, and then leaves with the rest of the operation.
Presuming Tarno dead, the gang then decide to leave for Earth as fast as possible. The trip takes a few days, and the first death among the group proper has shaken them up. Skejon remains focused, as she does, and soon they must continue on. They arrive on Earth on the orbital ring, and dock the Star-Reaver there. Making a short stop to restock on their equipment, they then rent a small shuttle planetside, into the Himalayas, where they enter Gvanhla's base. After trawling about for a time, Skejon is separated into a section where she is pitted against one of Gvanhla's main experiments. After a hard-fought duel, she does come out victorious, and moves on to find the others. Along the way, she finds an old terminal for the base's systems, it being STUN equipment and similar enough to her home's that she can do stuff on it. So, she finds some killbots in storage, and wipes their targeting parameters, too unskilled for anything more complex. Then she looks for Quaken, and finds him having beaten Chaer. The two then contact Jon, who promises he'll hold off Gvanhla and the recently released Ruin-Engine, so that the two can leave. They eventually take up this offer, taking the shuttle back to the ring and the Star-Reaver.
They then head to Ak'Thakra once more, and dock at a habitat. Still being wanted criminals by the Kingdom of Anakrion, now having expanded its influence, they are apprehended by the local police, Quaken making it out on the Star-Reaver. Skejon, however, is taken captive, and transported to a prison station in the system. A few days later, Quaken shows up with Nex to bust her out. In the process, they kill a number of people, Quaken especially, but they make it out, and Nex stays behind to let them leave in peace. They do, in a larger interstellar ship, and leave for Omega-Aurutka and Ochtotne Prime.
Upon arriving in system and closing on the planet, they recieve a very recent distress call of some sort, coming from an Anakrionian warship, the Stalwart Sentinel. The two board, finding a ship stripped of crew, split up, and make their way to the bridge. Skejon arrives first, and finds Mad's first and only remaining general, Anni, there, with a few allies. Skejon dispatches the regular fighters quickly, and then engages Anni, far outmatched. over the fight, Anni is obviously the superior fighter, but Skejon manages some critical strikes in, notable an attack with a grenade and shield that catches the general off guard, and almost severely wounds her, leaving herself also injured, her batteries damaged. At this point, Quaken shows up, and joins the fight. The rest of the fight is rather even, though Skejon sustains several injuries, including the destruction of her central reactor, but the two manage to take Anni down, Skejon getting the final strike in, slicing her neck open.
The next steps are something the two do not agree on. Quaken, jaded and numbed by the journey, wants to use the ship's spinal cannon to strike Mad's base directly, an act that, while it would destroy Mad's base and organization, would also kill hundreds of people, at least. Skejon cannot accept this, and positions herself in between Quaken and the ship's main controls. After some heated arguments, the two resolve themselves for a fight. Quaken strikes first, and in two blows, Skejon is down, Quaken's blades through her battery reserves. As he grabs hold of her, kneeling on the bridge, the damage catches up to her, the batteries die, and so does her mind.
