The Eldwell Empire was founded in 1489 AF by Queen Sophronia I, a visionary monarch who unified the fractured city-states of the Edison Archipelago under one banner. The founding capital was the City of Eld, a bustling trade hub and cultural center situated on the northern shore of the archipelago. Sophronia I, known as the “Unifier Queen,” forged alliances through diplomacy and military prowess, creating a stable foundation for what would become one of the most powerful nations in Nyria.

The unification marked the end of centuries of infighting and chaos in the region. Eld’s advantageous position as a natural harbor and trading hub allowed the empire to prosper economically, its wealth fueled by maritime trade and burgeoning industries. The early years of the empire were marked by significant expansions in governance, infrastructure, and cultural achievements, including the establishment of the Council of the Crown, an advisory body to the monarch.

The Burn and the Shift of Power

The Burn (1819-1826 AF) reshaped the world, and the Eldwell Empire was no exception. The flooding and volcanic eruptions devastated the City of Eld, rendering much of it uninhabitable. With the empire’s heartland submerged and its people displaced, the monarchy faced one of its greatest challenges.

Under the reign of Empress Sophronia II, the imperial government relocated the capital to Edison, which had survived the Burn relatively intact thanks to its elevated position and advanced flood defenses. Edison became the new symbol of resilience and innovation, rising as a city of industry and progress. The transition solidified the empire’s shift from a traditional feudal monarchy to a modern industrial state, driven by technological advancements and alchemical innovation.

Governance and Structure

The Eldwell Empire was an Absolute monarchy until 1870, with the reigning sovereign wielding significant power over the state. The monarch is supported by the Imperial Court, composed of advisors, ministers, and representatives of influential families. The Council of the Crown, while advisory, plays an essential role in the day-to-day administration of the empire, particularly in matters of trade, diplomacy, and military strategy.

The empire is divided into Duchies and Counties, each governed by a Duke or Count. These titles are hereditary, passed down through noble bloodlines, and form the backbone of the empire’s feudal structure. Dukes oversee larger regions, often encompassing multiple Counties, while Counts manage smaller territories within the empire. Reformation of the Noble Assembly

After the events of the Ealy 1870, the Noble Assembly has been reformatted with a lot of its powers stripped down and passed on the Elected Parliament of the Nation.

The Noble Assembly remained as a secondary hereditary advisory council under the purview of the Empress and her council but no longer has any legislative roles. The Reformation of the Noble Assembly left the nobles of the empire from rulers to become large land owner and stripped them of all their direct governance powers.

Universal Suffrage

In the 25th of Diene the Eldwell Empire had its first general elections, calling every man and woman over the age of 21 to vote to form the very first Elected Parliament of the nation.

Edison

Edison, the empire’s capital since the Burn, is a sprawling metropolis known for its towering industrial skyline, alchemical laboratories, and bustling trade districts. The city is divided into distinct zones, each serving specific functions, from the working-class Wall District to the affluent Stormwatch District. The Solspire, a massive structure dedicated to the empire’s progress and enlightenment, stands at the city’s heart, a beacon visible for miles.

Edison is also the center of Pipecross, the empire’s most popular sport, and the hub of its cultural and scientific advancements. The city reflects the empire’s dual commitment to tradition and progress, its cobbled streets lined with both ancient architecture and modern innovations.

The Eldwell Empire’s economy is one of the most robust in Nyria, driven by a mix of traditional industries and cutting-edge technology. Key sectors include:
