Schrödinger's Arcology

Arcology (noun)
A concept in architecture and urban planning describing a large, self‑contained structure designed to function as a complete city, integrating living spaces, work spaces, infrastructure, and ecological systems into a single, densely built environment.

Casinos are designed to keep people in. If you're not going to gamble, then sleep, eat, shop, relax, and be entertained within the resort so the management rakes in the money to pay for things like medical care and the equipment for slick new illusions.

The Black Box Casino, a Velvet Deep Managed Property, leans into the "everything you need is already here" model. She leans all the way in. Falls right over the rail.

One "management mission" is bringing the beauty and mysterious abundance of the desert inside. The world famous SchrödenGarden Conservatory is the result. It houses the illustrious Indoor Fruiting Pomegranate tree in addition to examples of vegetation from other harsh, hot, dry deserts. One of the keys to the Black Box's horticultural success is the composition of its soil. Just as arid and rocky as the rest of the Nevada desert, the Black Box's foundation rests on the fire-scorched and ash-laden site of a casino that was burned down.

The Velvet Deep cut a mean deal on the land.

The Box makes liberal use of underground space. In addition to the vault, much of the casino floor itself is underground. No reason to waste valuable surface real estate on rooms where you don't want things like daylight or views of the outside. The same is true for most of the shops and many of the lounges and restaurants. Even those that have ground or mezanine-level fronts utilize vertical design to offer guests VIP experiences, private lounges, meeting space, etc.

Because of the supernatural nature of half of the guests, most of them have little need or desire for traditional guest rooms, which leaves more space for housing employees.

There are no security cameras inside the Box. Cheating is prevented by the direct action of psychics in the roles of dealers, pit bosses, and other key interactive personnel. Because of this lack of observational effect, the inside of the box maintains a certain spacetime elasticity.

The Worldbuilder's Notes

Sometimes, articles are only useful to the author. Behind-the-scenes physics of story mechanics. This is one of those articles.

Erwin Schrödinger was an Austrian physicist whose work reshaped quantum mechanics. He’s best known for the Schrödinger equation, which describes how quantum states evolve, and for the famous thought experiment involving a cat that is simultaneously alive and dead until observed. Schrödinger’s ideas weren’t meant to be cute; they were protests against the absurdity of quantum interpretation. His work forced scientists to confront the unsettling truth that observation changes reality. In modern storytelling, “Schrödinger” signals paradox, uncertainty, and the eerie coexistence of incompatible states.
