Rainbow Amethyst psyporphyrite
Rainbow Amethyst, scientifically known as psyporphyrite, is a highly valued silica/quartz based mineral resource on the psychically changed planet Earth. It is known for enhancing psychic ability and holding psychic energy. It is often used by the psychic community to power psychic technology. It is also used for jewelry, but rarely in the modern era due to possible issues with too much energy radiation. Despite having crashed landed here, millions of years ago, they are now naturally occurring due to its strange habit of "growing" during favorable conditions. Because psyporphyrite and other gemstones like it have a tendency to do this, they are called "parasitic gems", however the name is misleading. As the "growth" of these gems are due to the creation of these crystals by the aptly named Psyori Jewelers, a species of rock eating micro animals that had traveled to Earth on the same meteorites that brought the first crystals of Rainbow amethyst to the planet.
Properties
Material Characteristics
Rainbow Amethysts are so named because of how it interacts with light. It will flash different shades of purple depending on the angle the light is hitting it, giving it an effect of have a rainbow of different purples in it. It will also beam a violet favored halo onto walls and other surfaces. They often form in clusters. These clusters will grow within or outside of rocky surfaces, in damp areas with access to light. Sometimes the rough rock and stone will be eaten away and all that will remain is the glowing crystal. Thanks to its high piezoelectric ability it begins to glow once all of the rock has been eaten away as it the creatures within it absorb more and more psychic energy to sustain themselves.

Compounds
There are many tools and other mechanical parts that were and are still being made of these gems. However in recent time, there are drugs that can be made from or require pieces of the gem to make.
Some common street names for these drugs are witches dust and glitter. What the drugs are made with is usually denoted by the color associated with it. For example, drugs made with rainbow amethyst is referred to as amethyst glitter or dust.
These drugs are known for creating a high in addition to possible side effects depending on whether or not a person is non-psy reactive, psy reactive, or psychic. A rather intense and long lasting high is common among users. Users that are at least psy reactive will sometimes gain temporary psychic abilities usually common ones on the lower end of the power scale such as teleloquy, zooloquy, and even telekinesis. Psychics will see a boost in the powers they possess. Non-psychics may astral project for a short period, although there has been only one reported case of such a thing.
Making these drugs and/or partaking of these drugs is considered highly illegal and punishable by up to 10 years or $100, 000 fine.

Geology & Geography
These stones are found in terrestrial areas, often found in caves or near rivers. The species that creates these stones require a little water to start the process so people have also found geodes near streams and lakes that housed these crystals as well. They are pretty ubitiquous in boreal forest and other damp habitats that get at least some light. But the largest deposits are near old meteorite crash sites that were near water.
Origin & Source
The existence of rainbow amethyst is thanks to a extraterrestrial subspecies of Astragrades called, Mineravorium psyori porphyra more commonly called the Psyori Amethyst Jeweler. This micro animals make the rainbow amethysts as a by product of their dietary habits. They turn the rock and other minerals they eat into rainbow amethyst as they digest it. Most Amethyst Jewelers form colonies which lead to the formation of large crystal clusters. The glow from within is caused by the energetic nature of the species incased in as well as the rocks piezoelectric properties. The pressure from the energy of the Jewelers on the inside causes them to glow. There is also mechanical stress from the energy that gets pulled into the stone as well by the difference in air pressure within the slightly hollower crystal than the area around it.
Life & Expiration
Gemstones don't have a half-life normally. Usually the deterioration, if any is caused by outside forces. However, in the case of the rainbow amethyst, it has a bit of a shelf life. Once the colonies within the stone die off, the crystalize and the stone goes dark. This is in when most of the rainbow amethyst is harvested for use as storage containers for energy or made into other things, like parts. Gemstones don't have a half-life normally. Once the colonies within the stone die off, the bodies crystalize and the stone goes dark. This is when most of the rainbow amethyst is harvested for use as storage containers for energy or made into other things, like parts. However, harvesting has to be done carefully as the porous nature of the rock can cause it to be brittle. Which can lead to easy fractures and broken gems.
History & Usage
History
There were clusters of rainbow amethyst and other gemstones and minerals already on the meteorites that crashed to earth. So, they were already present. However, they began to spread as the Amethyst Psyori Jewelers began to populate the Earth and began feeding on Earth's rocks and minerals. Since then they have been spreading along rives mines and mountains for millions of years. They are part of the landscape in many forests, mountains, and valleys. Sites where they are found in abundance or excess have been sites of bizarre rituals and/or brutal crimes and murders. Many a mine town and areas near meteorite crashes ended up abandoned due to the effects of the gemstones energy during its active phase of its "life" cycle. Most of these sites are covered in the crystals in the modern times.
Discovery
It's not quite clear when the Rainbow amethyst was discovered, as it had been in use for centuries as plain old Amethyst, which is terrestrial for the most part. However, the first proper mention of the difference was made by Ogden Menthalma in 1785, as the field of geology was still in its infancy. He noted that Rainbow Amethyst gleamed in an other worldly way when held under light, but regular amethyst did not. Over time thanks to the invention of microscopes and other geological tables and study methods, more was discovered about the gem and its origins.
Everyday use
Due to the effects that Rainbow Amethyst, any of the Rainbow Psyori for that matter, the gem is not a household item outside of family heirlooms and even they have to be registered. Then they have to kept in special containers even if they are not active anymore. Because they can start drawing psychic energy into itself and it could also draw other species of psyoris to the area. Outside of that, public ownership of Psyori stones are strictly prohibited.
However, in the psychic community there is limited use of things made from the psyori gemstones, mainly amethyst. Amethyst are used to power psychic machinery and systems used by the Cerebrum Organization and a few government installations. They are often used as power conductors and storage containers. Some times they used to make weaponry or tools. Sometimes, inactive stones will be prescribed to children or adults that have trouble regulating their power output as they work to gain control.
In historical times, they were used for knives, spears, and even arrowheads and similar items that stone or other minerals were used for, including jewelry. It was also used in ritualistic work as well, archeologist have dug up many a set of mortar and pestles made of rainbow amethysts. They have found other ritual finery made from the same stone.
Cultural Significance and Usage
The amethyst stone has been in use since before the age of modern man. It was used in weapon making and adornments during the heights of the merchant classes and royalty. In particular the tribes of the north west were known to use magical arrows to defeat their foes. They were found in burial chambers all over the world. There are ancient writings that detail their usage in medical treatment as well as spiritual divination and the like. The cultural significance of the stone has wavered over time due to the decreased availability of the stone. But there are still some aspects of its cultural history that lives on.
The towns were often left in disrepair and later taken over by another enterprising group and the process often repeated itself. And the fate for many of them were that they are now barren parts of the land escape that are now many home to the animals that were able to survive out there.
Family members that were hospitalized due to the mental affects were often found to have other underlying disorders that had gone out of control. Removing the item or the person from from the home, usually caused a reduction in the symptoms. But the patients usually still required extensive therapy to heal properly from the ordeal.
Haunted Towns
When rainbow psy stones were first discovered, there was a great rush on the areas as they were an instant hot commodity for governments and civilians a like. Although often for different reasons. Therefore towns cropped up around various areas. This later lead to more conflicts between settlers and natives. These towns however, did not last very long. As most of the citizens from outside of the areas quickly started going mad or suffering extend bouts of depression or mental malaise such as nightmares and anxieties. Combined with the sleep deprivation that was often a side effect of these issues, there were large numbers of incidents. This eventually ground the towns to a halt as people either died, became mental deficient or left to escape what ever was haunting the areas. The towns were often left in disrepair and later taken over by another enterprising group and the process often repeated itself. And the fate for many of them were that they are now barren parts of the land escape that are now many home to the animals that were able to survive out there.
Native and Slave Resettlement
On the plus side, if the natives to the area were not fully wiped out, they usually returned to the area and thrived there. During the Civil war and slavery eras, they often took in slaves. A vast majority of them had resistance to the rocks as well and could withstand the radiation. These became thriving towns of mixed heritage that are still thriving today. There are also towns and even some cities that were born of slaves escaping west and free themselves and given that most settlers were not able to withstand the radiation, many of the towns were left to grow and prosper, eventually becoming part of the US.... (maybe its own place? idk)Cursed Artifacts and Families
Also another cultural phenomenon that cropped up was cursed artifacts, mainly jewelry. Due to the energy pulling ability of the stones, people that wore jewelry often were starting to suffer from things like hallucinations, runs of bad luck, and feelings of paranoia. At first, it was believed to be the work of curses and such. Most stories involved curses from Natives or slave descendants. But after examining the artefacts in question, it was determined that it was the psy rocks that were having an effect on the minds of those that were vulnerable to the energy. This discovery would lead to research that discovered some of the differences between those that were psy reactive and those that weren't.Family members that were hospitalized due to the mental affects were often found to have other underlying disorders that had gone out of control. Removing the item or the person from from the home, usually caused a reduction in the symptoms. But the patients usually still required extensive therapy to heal properly from the ordeal.
Madame LaBlanque
A famous example of the problems the gems could cause . She was a known mistress and socialite that delighted in tourturing slaves and other lower class workers under her employ. There were horrific stories of her cruelty. However, when ample evidence of her crimes was discovered. A mob of citizens chased her and her family out of Louisiana and ransacked their home. She would remain in France in exile until her death. But according to surviving family members as well as letters, it was reported that she had begun to decline in mental health after the move. However, there are a few accounts that say she she had been losing it before the move. Regardless, the Madame's mental state began to decline. She became paranoid, claiming that the ghosts of slaves were beginning to torment her at night. Her family tried to stake out who could be doing it and at one point, her eldest wrote that she was doing it herself. After assaulting a worker and having to pay for the damages, the family had her committed. A check of the bedroom later uncovered that she had been using a make up foundation made with crushed rainbow amethyst. Dr. Claire Needleman became curious about it and began to see a pattern with other users of the new powders. It was discovered that they were being poisoned by the radiation from the psi stone. Thanks to Madame LaBlanque's story, it was found that these additives to make up were making people ill. After that, a law was passed that the psy stones could not be used in anything that could be absorbed or ingested by humans or animals.Industrial Use
There is not a widespread industrial use of psy gems like rainbow amethysts. They are mainly used in the production of psy based machines and such. The production is only legally handled by the CEREBRUM Organization which is responsible for most of the Psychic related matters in the country. Anything made outside of that is considered illegal in most countries.
Refinement
Rainbow amethyst can be used in their present state, depending on what you needs are. But most amethyst go through refinement of some kind.
Lapidary- this is when they are cut and polished for use in machines or as things like jewelry (although it is not worn much now not without safety measures).
Ground- the gem is hollow by nature so it is easy to ground into a powder. The powder is often used a power source for hand held devices.
Hazards
Mainly the hazards have to do with the stone's or rather the radiation from the stones' effects upon the mind in humans. They seem to inspire growth and physicals changes within animals instead of mental deterioration. This brings an additional hazard of possibly hostile animals with telekinetic abilities. This could be potential dangerous in areas where human civilization and nature collide which is becoming more and more common.
Environmental Impact
Since the stones are now naturally occurring at this point, the environmental impact is complicated. The impact to the previous environments that they initially invaded is hard to determine given how long ago it happened. However, they are now part of various ecosystems. However, it has been noted that due to the ability for more of these stones to be created could be a possible a problem in future if the species that makes these stones continue to proliferate unmonitored.
Resusability
The reusability of the stones is limited in terms of pshyical use as a material for building things, due to their brittle nature. But can be turned into powder or further shaped if enough is left. Also they can be resued as storage containers up to 3 times or so, depending on the size of the stone.Distribution
Trade & Market
Psy gems like rainbow amethysts are heavily restricted from being sold. So, you won't find them on average markets. However, there are thriving black markets for the around areas that are publicly known to have them. People pay tons of money for them for things like weapon manufacturing and more recently drug manufacturing.
Storage
The gems should be stored in consistent temperatures and humidity. As this can lead to fractures in the stone, which it is already prone to the scratches and fractures due to its hollow nature. A decent box will a sealed lid should be a good. If you want to block the radiation, then you would need a storage device that is non-porous and thick as most of the radiation given off by the gems rests somewhere between beta and gamma radiation. So, thick plastic or some wood will definitely contain the radiation.
Law & Regulation
The laws around rainbow amethysts and other stones like it have been pretty strict for a long time. Due to the health risks they pose where they are displayed and used are heavily restricted. How they are used in machinery is also heavily regulated due to the potential for accidents and other hazards when they are used incorrectly, such as over clocking them for storage can lead to explosions. Current law prohibits the public sale of items containing the gems for the sake of public safety. However, there are exceptions made for the psychic communities that utilize them.
