Shardstone

Shardstone is a translucent mineral with the odd property of forming flat pointy rhombuses, usually called shards. These shards vary in size, but are always exactly 4 mm thick. Trace amounts of other materials can give shards bright and vibrant colours. It is the main base material for the creation of Shardslips. The regular shape of shardstone crystals make them an excellent material to create mosaics with, something the Quadrus Peak Civilization is well known for.

Measuring Unit

The sheer exactness in the thickness of shards has lead to people using stacks of them as measuring instrument. Upon the standardization of the measuring system, the millimeter was defined to be equal to 1/4th the thickness of a shard, and rest of the common distance units are derived from this.
