Midglen
Midglen is a sprawling industrial chokepoint nestled on the western shore of Serenity Lake, where the mineral-rich waters of the Celestial Creek flow down from the treacherous Kobold Hills to meet the Thornwood River. This melting-pot community is defined by a sharp divide: the timber-framed "Vermin" labyrinth of the West Bank stands in stark contrast to the stone-paved, monopolized South Bank where the South Wind Trading Co. exerts its iron-fisted control. As the logistical heart of the valley, the town funnels all commerce from neighboring Silentdale and Stonemond through its gates, ensuring that every crate of stone and ounce of ferroflux is accounted for and taxed.
Demographics
Midglen is quite the melting pot, likely stemming from its position as a former frontier town with easy access to waterways, forestry, and mining operations. Because of that, the population reflects the hopes and dreams of all peoples that have come here seeking a new life at one point or another. The distribution of races in Midglen is largely equivalent across nine different groups. The largest single demographic are halflings at a little more than 14% with elves making up the smallest group at roughly 8%.
Industry & Trade
Midglen has transformed from a sleepy frontier valley into a high-stakes industrial pressure cooker. The discovery of Ferroflux —a rare, magically-reactive mineral—shifted the town’s economy from sustainable logging and agriculture to a volatile, resource-extraction monopoly.
The town is now a "Company Town" in every sense of the word, functioning as the primary refinery hub for the South Wind Trading Co.
Midglen serves as the logistical throat of the region. Because the geography of the surrounding hills forces travel through the valley floor, the South Wind has effectively turned the town into a toll-booth for civilization.
Robust Local Industries
Despite the monopoly, the town’s heritage of craftsmanship persists, though the South Wind "clips the wings" of these businesses through heavy regulation.
The Jewelers & Silversmiths
Centered around shops like The Revered Gemstones, this industry thrives on the rare minerals brought in from the hills. While the South Wind controls the volume, the Dragonborn and Elven artisans of Midglen provide the value.
The Valley Breweries
Limited but vital. The "Vermin" in the West Bank rely on local ales to avoid the "Company Water," which is often tainted by refinery runoff. Small, independent brew-houses operate in the shadows of the South Bank’s larger, taxed taverns.
Guilds and Factions
South Wind Trading Company Influence
The South Wind Trading Company is the undisputed architect of Midglen’s modern era, having transformed a rustic lakeside port into a fortified logistical engine for the Society of the Silk Rose. Operating out of a massive granite headquarters on the South Bank known as the "Gilded Block," the Company exerts a total monopoly over the region's ferroflux trade and the vital shipping lanes of Serenity Lake. Their influence is felt at every level of civic life, from the "Trade Auditors" who squeeze independent merchants at the Mooney Market to the iron-reinforced bridges where their private Sentinels stand watch. By corrupting the local Town Watch with lucrative "oversight bonuses" and maintaining a de facto nighttime curfew through aggressive patrols, the South Wind has effectively replaced the town’s traditional governance with a cold, corporate oligarchy.
Beneath the veneer of legitimate commerce, the Company functions as the primary financier and transport network for the White Knight and his subordinates. While the "Vermin" of the Left Bank struggle under rising tolls and disappearing civil liberties, the South Wind’s Right Bank enclave thrives, featuring paved roads and luxury amenities that serve as both a reward for loyalty and a fortress against the displaced. Whether it is through the silent disappearance of local dissenters or the clandestine movement of lead-lined crates to the Garrick complex, the South Wind ensures that every gear in Midglen turns according to their design. To the citizens of Midglen, the Company is not merely a guild of merchants; it is an omnipresent shadow that dictates who eats, who works, and who is allowed to remain in the light of the sun.
Geography
Midglen, like most towns, is defined by its relationship to the world around it. The heart of the town sits on the western shore of Serenity Lake. This area is a dense maze of timber-framed houses, bustling markets, and administrative buildings. A small but vital portion of the towns sits on the right (south) bank of the Celestial Creek. This is the most "modernized" sector, featuring all stone-paved roads, reinforced warehouses, and the heavy barracks of the South Wind Trading Company patrols.
The Kobold Hills sit roughly three and a half miles to the west of town, and if one were to follow the Celestial Creek, one would arrive at its source in the hills.
Serenity Lake itself opens up into the Thornwood River which flows through the rest of County Navania past the towns of Pinewell and ultimately to Eastvault and empties into the sea.
