How to politely flirt at Magi social events
Watch Flirtations are a private language used by the magi during grand social events to subtly flirt with each other by sending each other messages using their watches. They are a hallmark of refined and elegant behaviour, and allow Magi to speak to each other without formal introductions that lack secrecy and privacy.
Watches were first invented in 103 and were powered by aether. For this reason, they could only be used by the Magi. For everyone else, public clocks were used to tell the time.
In 513, it was discovered that the quartz inside could be used to share messages over short distances, no more than a mile. A craze of messaging overtook Magi society as they used their watches to communicate privately at public events.
Initially, messages could be spoken into the watch, and then the receiver could listen to them. By the late 500s, they could read on the watch face. The mid 600s saw the invention of the HUD, which allowed Magi to text, talk, or make video calls.
When resonance repeaters became commonplace across Magnus by the late 700s, using a watch to communicate short distances waned temporarily in popularity. Using something that was now outdated technologically has never been popular amongst the Magi. In the late 800s, watch flirtations regained popularity as an elegant and traditional form of private communication, and became the hallmark of a quality Magi-only event.
How to Flirt
Messages sent and received via a watch would always be grammatically correct, but the language used to indicate you were open, or not, to messaging became the true root of the phrase flirtation.
