Throne City
Throne City rises from the dark waters of the Reshal Sea as a stark monument to Therengia’s long and often grim history. Once the earliest seat of power for the Barony of Therengia, the island served as the realm’s first center of governance, its stone halls and coastal fortifications overlooking the sea lanes that would later carry the Empire’s trade and warships alike. As the realm expanded inland and the city of Therenborough rose to prominence, the island’s importance as a political capital gradually faded. The ancient administrative halls fell silent, their authority transferred to the mainland, leaving behind only weathered ruins and the memory of a throne long since abandoned.
In time, the island found a new and darker purpose. Its natural isolation, steep cliffs, and commanding position along the Reshal coast made it an ideal site for the construction of Bloodshore Prison, the Empire’s most secure facility for the confinement of dangerous spellcasters and enemies of the state. The fortress that now dominates the island’s highest ridge stands where the old capital’s defenses once guarded the crown, transforming Throne City from a place of rule into a place of containment. Few prisoners brought to the island ever leave it again.
Today, Throne City exists as a heavily controlled military enclave. The Reiksmarine maintains a fortified harbor and naval station along the island’s sheltered approaches, using the location as a primary base of operations in the Reshal Sea and as the first line of defense against any threat approaching the Therengian coast. Between the naval bastion and the looming walls of Bloodshore, little remains of the island’s former life. To most across the Empire, Throne City is no longer remembered as a capital, but as a place of iron gates and dark water—a lonely island where power once ruled, and where now the Empire’s most dangerous secrets are locked away.

Geography
Throne City occupies a small, rugged island situated several miles off the southeastern coast of Therengia in the Reshal Sea. The island rises abruptly from the surrounding waters, its perimeter dominated by steep limestone cliffs that plunge directly into the dark, churning sea below. These cliffs form a natural barrier along most of the shoreline, broken only by a handful of narrow inlets where centuries of wind and surf have carved shallow coves into the stone. During storms, waves crash violently against the rock faces, sending sheets of spray high into the air and making the island appear wreathed in mist.
The waters surrounding Throne City are treacherous to navigate. Submerged rock shelves and jagged shoals extend outward from the island in several directions, remnants of ancient stone formations slowly eroded by the sea. Many of these hazards remain hidden just beneath the surface, particularly during periods of high tide or poor visibility. Mariners unfamiliar with the waters often give the island a wide berth, as sudden shifts in wind and current can push vessels dangerously close to the submerged rocks.
The island’s interior consists of a windswept plateau of weathered stone and thin soil, where sparse grasses and hardy coastal shrubs cling to life in the constant sea winds. Toward the island’s highest ridges, exposed bedrock dominates the landscape, forming uneven terraces and natural outcroppings overlooking the Reshal. In clearer weather, the mainland coast of Therengia can be seen faintly on the horizon, though the distance and ever-present sea fog often leave the island feeling isolated from the rest of the world.

Climate
Throne City experiences a temperate maritime climate shaped almost entirely by the surrounding waters of the Reshal Sea. Temperatures remain relatively moderate throughout the year, with the sea acting as a stabilizing influence that softens both summer heat and winter cold. While the mainland of Therengia may experience sharper seasonal extremes, the island itself rarely sees prolonged freezes. Even during the coldest months, frost tends to be brief and light, quickly swept away by the persistent ocean winds.
Wind is the most defining feature of the island’s climate. Strong coastal currents moving across the Reshal Sea frequently drive steady winds across Throne City’s exposed cliffs and plateau. These winds shift direction with seasonal weather patterns but remain a constant presence throughout the year, carrying salt spray and damp air that gradually weathers stone and metal alike. The island’s higher ridges often experience stronger gusts, while the sheltered coves and inlets can remain comparatively calm.
Fog and low cloud cover are common, particularly during the cooler months when warm currents from the Faldesu River basin meet the colder sea air. Dense sea mists can roll in suddenly, sometimes shrouding the entire island for hours or even days at a time. Rainfall is frequent but rarely torrential, typically arriving in steady coastal squalls that pass quickly across the island before drifting inland toward the forests of the Nordreik. Though the climate is rarely severe, the constant wind, salt air, and dampness give Throne City a perpetually grey and weathered character, as though the island itself is slowly being worn away by the sea.
