Alchemist

Alchemy is often misunderstood as the pursuit of turning lead into gold, conjuring precious metals from worthless ones, or otherwise transforming one substance directly into another. Such feats belong primarily to the schools of transmutation magic, though the two disciplines have crossed paths often enough throughout history that the confusion persists. True alchemy is both broader and, in many respects, far more practical: the study of the natural and supernatural properties of substances and how those properties may be extracted, refined, combined, preserved, or altered to produce a desired effect.

An alchemist works with the chemistry of life—and, just as often, death. Herbs, fungi, minerals, venoms, bodily tissues, monster organs, elemental substances, and countless stranger materials may all possess properties useful to a skilled practitioner. From these, alchemists produce medicines, potions, salves, antitoxins, stimulants, acids, poisons, incendiaries, choking compounds, and innumerable other concoctions. The same knowledge that allows an alchemist to halt bleeding, neutralize venom, or encourage damaged flesh to regenerate can just as readily be employed to make that flesh blister, wither, or cease living altogether.

Though alchemy frequently overlaps with magic—and many of its most remarkable reagents originate from inherently magical creatures or environments—it is not itself synonymous with spellcasting. At its heart, alchemy is the disciplined study of substance, reaction, and consequence: learning what the world is made of, discovering what its myriad components can do, and determining what happens when they are brought together. Where the transmuter might reshape matter through arcane power, the alchemist instead asks a deceptively simple question: What can I make this do?

Career

Qualifications

There is no single path to becoming an alchemist, though most accomplished practitioners learn through some combination of formal study and lengthy apprenticeship. In more regulated nations, particularly Zoluren and Therengia, those wishing to practice commercially are generally expected to apprentice beneath an established alchemist before paying the appropriate fees and obtaining a government license. Elsewhere, regulation may be considerably less strict—or entirely nonexistent—with village apothecaries, hedge alchemists, military specialists, artificers, and self-taught practitioners all working beneath the same broad title.

Licenses and certificates, however, make an alchemist legal, not necessarily good. True mastery comes from years of practical experience: learning which ingredients may be substituted, how reagents change with age, when a mixture has gone wrong, and—most importantly—when to step away from the workbench. There is an old joke among practitioners that the surest sign of a master alchemist is not the number of books upon their shelves, but that they have reached old age with most of their fingers, both of their eyes, and at least one eyebrow still intact. As with most humor among alchemists, it is considerably less funny when one realizes how often this is not the case.

Payment & Reimbursement

The services of a skilled alchemist can command considerable sums, particularly when the work requires rare reagents, specialized knowledge, or considerable personal risk. A true master of the profession may charge prices beyond the means of ordinary folk, and the most celebrated practitioners can indeed become extraordinarily wealthy. Yet even successful alchemists rarely retain as much wealth as their prices might suggest; exotic ingredients must be purchased, harvested, imported, or commissioned from adventurers and hunters, while laboratories, specialized equipment, licensing fees, and the occasional catastrophic experiment consume fortunes with remarkable efficiency.

For many practitioners, however, wealth is secondary to the work itself. Some devote their lives to medicines and remedies, others to discovery and experimentation, while still others find considerably greater satisfaction in perfecting poisons, acids, incendiaries, and other less charitable applications of their craft. Whether their creations save lives or end them, most accomplished alchemists share an intense pride in their profession—and a tendency to spend whatever fortune they earn acquiring one more impossibly rare ingredient for the next experiment.

Other Benefits

Beyond financial reward, accomplished alchemists may earn considerable prestige, influence, and recognition for their work. Healers and medicinal alchemists are particularly celebrated during times of war, plague, or disaster, when a single discovery may save hundreds of lives. Even in quieter times, successfully treating an influential noble, wealthy merchant, military commander, or other prominent figure can transform an otherwise obscure practitioner into a sought-after name almost overnight, bringing patronage and access to resources that coin alone might never purchase.

Not all reputations, however, are built upon saving lives. Military alchemists responsible for particularly effective incendiaries, acids, choking compounds, or siege preparations may become famous—or infamous—for innovations that reshape warfare. A practitioner whose formula brings down an "impregnable" wall may receive medals from one kingdom and find a substantial bounty placed upon their head by another. Among alchemists, recognition is ultimately earned through results, and history is often less concerned with whether those results healed a thousand soldiers or burned a fortress to the ground.

Perception

Purpose

Alchemists fulfill an extraordinarily broad role within the societies that support them, and reducing the profession to healing alone does it a considerable disservice. While many alchemists do serve as healers, apothecaries, and herbalists—preparing medicines, treating disease, neutralizing poisons, and assisting surgeons—the same fundamental knowledge of substances and their effects has applications in nearly every corner of civilized life. Alchemists produce sleeping draughts and paralytics, venoms and antivenoms, preservatives and solvents, dyes and reagents, acids and neutralizing agents, as well as countless specialized compounds for craftsmen, scholars, explorers, and artificers. Those with the necessary magical knowledge may also turn their craft toward the brewing of true magical potions and other supernatural preparations.

The profession becomes considerably less gentle wherever conflict follows. Alchemists supply armies and adventurers with smoke-producing compounds, incendiaries, corrosive mixtures, choking agents, poisons, flash powders, and other creations intended to incapacitate, destroy, or kill. The same paralytic that allows a surgeon to operate without a patient thrashing in agony might be smeared across an assassin's blade; the same acid used by a metalsmith to etch intricate designs might be bottled and thrown at an enemy. Alchemy itself makes little distinction between benevolent and destructive applications. Its purpose is ultimately to understand the properties hidden within the substances of the world and put them to use. What that use becomes is a question for the alchemist—and, occasionally, whoever is unfortunate enough to be standing nearby.

Demographics

Alchemy is practiced by men and women in roughly equal measure, with neither gender holding a significant majority within the profession as a whole. Certain specializations show modest differences: alchemists focused primarily upon healing, medicine, and apothecary work tend somewhat more often to be women, while those specializing in military applications, incendiaries, explosives, and other destructive compounds tend somewhat more often to be men. These divisions are far from absolute, however, and exceptions are commonplace.

Indeed, strict specialization is itself something of a luxury. Many alchemists practice whatever aspects of their craft are demanded by circumstance, particularly those serving smaller communities, adventuring companies, or military forces. A practitioner who spends one season treating illness may spend the next preparing antivenoms, preserving food, or supplying soldiers with incendiaries. Ultimately, alchemy cares considerably more about knowledge, experience, and a steady hand than the gender of the person holding the flask.

Operations

Tools

The tools of an alchemist vary enormously according to their specialty, wealth, and temperament, though even the humblest practitioner requires considerably more than a mortar and pestle. A typical alchemical workspace is crowded with glass vials, bottles, flasks, beakers, retorts, alembics, crucibles, funnels, pipettes, measuring spoons, scales, strainers, presses, grinders, mortars, pestles, stirring rods, clamps, tongs, and filtration cloths. Heat is provided by everything from simple candles and oil burners to charcoal braziers, furnaces, and carefully controlled magical flames, while iceboxes, packed snow, alchemical coolants, or enchanted containers provide the opposite extreme. Temperature is often critical; some reactions require hours of gentle warmth, while others demand that a substance be flash-frozen, boiled violently, or subjected to temperatures capable of melting metal.

The acquisition and preparation of ingredients requires an entirely different collection of implements. Alchemists commonly possess knives, scalpels, bone saws, shears, forceps, needles, hooks, scrapers, and other tools more readily associated with surgeons, butchers, and tanners. Harvesting a troll's regenerative tissue, draining an ankheg's acid sac, removing the venom glands of a giant serpent, or extracting an intact organ from a monstrosity requires considerable precision—and often specialized equipment designed to prevent the ingredient from killing the person collecting it. Thick gloves, leather aprons, masks, goggles, respirators, reinforced containers, wax-sealed jars, padded specimen boxes, and long-handled tools are therefore common sights in well-equipped laboratories. An experienced alchemist may carry an entire separate kit devoted solely to field harvesting, because bringing the specimen home intact is often considerably easier than bringing the entire owlbear.

The laboratory of a wealthy or particularly ambitious alchemist can resemble something between an apothecary, a smithy, a kitchen, and the aftermath of a minor industrial accident. Distillation towers bubble beside furnaces; coils of copper tubing wind between condensation vessels; presses squeeze oils and essences from plants and organs; locked cabinets contain volatile powders and dangerous venoms; shelves sag beneath hundreds of carefully labeled bottles. Pumps, bellows, pressure vessels, vacuum chambers, enchanted refrigeration boxes, magically regulated furnaces, and elaborate networks of glass tubing may all be employed by masters pushing the boundaries of their craft. Some maintain specialized environments for their reagents—heated cabinets, freezing chambers, darkrooms, humid cellars, or even small gardens and fungal beds.

Storage is an art unto itself. Alchemists accumulate bottles, ceramic pots, waxed packets, metal canisters, wooden boxes, waterskins, wineskins and other fluid bladders, and containers made from materials chosen specifically because they will not react with whatever unpleasant substance has been placed inside them. Every competent practitioner learns that what holds a reagent can be as important as the reagent itself. Acid eats metal. Certain venoms degrade in sunlight. Elemental compounds may react poorly to heat, cold, water, air—or occasionally the continued existence of nearby elemental compounds.

For all the complexity of their equipment, however, an alchemist's most valuable tools remain precision, patience, and experience. A laboratory containing thousands of gold pieces' worth of equipment is useless to someone who cannot recognize when a solution has turned the wrong shade of green. The finest alchemists develop an almost instinctive relationship with their laboratories: listening to the rhythm of boiling liquids, smelling subtle changes in vapor, watching how quickly a precipitate forms, and knowing exactly when something has gone catastrophically wrong.

It is perhaps for this reason that outsiders often regard accomplished alchemists as at least slightly mad. Their workshops hiss, bubble, smoke, freeze, burn, and occasionally explode; their shelves contain jars of organs from creatures most sensible people avoid meeting; and they routinely respond to discoveries such as "this substance dissolves flesh on contact" not with horror, but with the considerably more troubling question:   "Interesting. What happens if I heat it?"
