The River Forest Star Foragers
The Avenai blended forest mysticism with advanced bio-adaptive technology. Their canoes would shape-shift to match currents, while their starcraft mimicked the flowing forms of river trees. They traveled in bioluminescent seedships, which were grown, not built. Despite their technological sophistication, the Avenai remained small-band foragers, living lightly on the land.
Geographic Location
The Avenai roamed the central equatorial rainbelt of Aokaan Dari along the Jinbule rivers east of the great plain of Bo Kaabo. They traveled in the area west of Ilatwai Dari's outer coast, centered around 2-12 degrees northern latitudes and occasionally dipping slightly south of the equator.
Migration Patterns
The movements of the Avenai were guided by their air-ion drift maps as they followed the fish runs, vegetation, and fruit cycles while tending to the well-being of the waterways and forests of their territory. It was their migratory routes that formed what was known as the green halo around the eastern approaches to the great plain of Bo Kaabo. The Avenai drifted along the rivers like leaves on the water roaming their territory in living canoes whose hulls softly glowed with bioluminescent veins. Entire kin clusters journeyed together in grand flotillas along the waterways to attend the Festival of Titi'abule on the great plain of Bo Kaabo forming river based arrival camps west of the marsh belts.
Landscape & Settlements
The dense forests and misty river valleys of the Avenai were alive with lush vegetation, wild orchards, fragrant flowers, and luminous moss. Darting ribbon-wing birds and colorful amphibious mammals slipped between water and bark. Their settlements were seasonal and ephemeral having no walls or streets and barely disturbing the forest floor. Their shelters were layered into the rainforest canopies on temporary platforms grown from braided vine wood joined by walkways laced with mist. They grew floating docks from root mats for canoe landings and camped in the clearings among the sacred groves, always careful to disturb the environment as little as possible.
Daily Life
For the Avenai, mornings often began with river reading rituals where the elders tasted the mist, felt the river current pressure, and consulted with scent interpreting symbiotes. The rest of the day was usually spent foraging, crafting, and tending the wild orchards and waterways. Evenings were the times when the people would come together to prepare and share a communal meal that generally consisted of steamed river tubers wrapped in glowing leaves, seasonal vegetables, fresh fish glazed with bioluminescent algae, and fermented fruit nectars that gently altared perception. Elders shared their wisdom and songs were sung by the tribal singers often accompanied by bone flute playing.
Dress
The Avenai typically wore clothing that blended with their environment and was made using fibers natural to their region. Their signature piece of clothing was a flowing bioluminescent vine woven cloak that shifted color with changes in mood and humidity. They also had a practice of tattooing their skin with a substance called holo-ink that was made with vegetable dyes from local plants.
Ecotech
Most adult Avenai had symbiotic implants that helped them to interpret atmospheric data via scent and their clothing was designed to adapt to shifting levels of humidity and temperature in order to keep the wearer comfortable at all times. Their canopy platforms were reinforced with adaptive nanofiber to provide greater strength and stability and the people used song flute communicators that combined modern technology with the ancient art of bone carved instruments.
Sky Cycle Interpretation
The Avenai read the stars like they read the rivers, and like all Bane'ile, they were particularly attuned to their own twin stars. Danare, the bright and steady one, was said to be the deep pulse of cosmic flow, while Zirakon, the smaller unpredictable one, was known as the wanderer whose bright phases affected river plasma conductivity. They interpreted the violet dawn mists as temporal thinning events when the boundaries between dimensions were most easily traversed.
